Did anyone else watch the first in the series tonight? It's good to have Hammond back.

I didn't realise that his accident was caused by a tyre blow out! unless i am behind the times on this.

Glad the series is back though!!

Scary stuff. Can't believe the comment he made before the runs though!! Can anyone say D'OH!!!

Devastating crash, 314 mph must be freakin fast, the most I've been is 140 on the bike and there's a lot of information to take in! Most speed guys work up to that over time, training their brains to deal with it. Must have been hard jumping in and lighting up the beast.

He was doing a great job though, as you say it was the blow out that caused the mishap

Did you notice in every run he was steering left due to the crosswind, reckon the tyre got pretty overloaded on each run on the right hand siide and then gave out. Great he's fine now, and know there has been a falling out between the car's owners/running team and the bbc, but like anything you'll never know the full story.

Great to have them back though, sunday is an evening to look forward to again!

As for the adrenalin that was running through him in the earlier runs, probably something we can all relate too....

I thought that, but when you see him getting ready for the runs on the day of the crash he looked like that. With the bags under his eyes, etc.

It's one of these (http://www.araihelmet-europe.com/php/page/index2.php?page=car_des). Arai's top of the range car helmet. Along with some Simpson and Bell helmets, one of the few that can say they are rated for that sort of crash. Not much use on the bike though, the visor opening is too small, and they weigh quite a bit :) It's what you'd want on your head in that situation though.

Was a great episode, the comment about Jade Goody was hilarious.

Upon watching that film of his crash I think the risks were too great to even attempt the run, how the safety people didn't realise this is quite shocking. The crosswinds were far too strong, as someone said you could see the car twitching (heh) the whole way on each run. Hindsight is a marvellous gift but common sense and safety standards should have prevailed (says Mr Not Sensible  ). Just glad Richard survived the ordeal.

fizzwheel
29-01-07, 09:11 AM
But it wasnt the crosswinds that caused the accident, The front tyre delaminated and then exploded.

You have to remember that all 3 of those guys spend a lot of time in high performance exotica. Yes 314mph is fast, but remember the spend alot of time on track hooning around in high performance stuff so they are used to a certain amount of speed.

IMHO its not the same as you and I jumping into something like that and lighting the afterburner.

Repeated Wednesday and Sunday I think. Do you have Telewest? They have it available on the replay thingie.

I thought it was a good episode though Hammond does look older. I also got the impression he really didn't like talking about the accident? Not surprising really.

Sorry, but I thought the Jade comment was awful. Lets carrying on the whole bullying theme, a great example to set. Pointless and pathetic IMO.

Very dissapointed with the program tbh.

Jag Vs AM was rubbish, who buys those cars and will spend time drifting them? I'd still rather have the £35k 500bhp VXR500 Monaro and beat the pair of them, and be an even better drift machine anyway ;) Can't see Mr Suit doing that though.. You buy them for Class, and the AM wins hands down (just look at those shexy dials  ). Clarkson contridicts himself though. IN many other programs he says about the tiny rear seats on cars being totally pointless, but because its a Jag, he embraces the idea? Contridiction on his own words?

Hamsters crash, entertaining, but seen far worse on Car Wars in the 80's  Still, he's the best guy on there, and a biker, so im really glad he's still around.

The road paving, although a farce, did prove a massive point IMO though.....

Was looking forward to TG, but a dissapointment :( Roll on the next epidsode though, i'll still watch it

owner of the car is partly blaming the hamster...

The owner of the jet car in which Richard Hammond was nearly killed has suggested the Top Gear presenter was partly to blame for the crash. Dramatic of the 288 mph crash has just been screened for the first time.

It clearly showed the car's right front tyre shredded after a blowout as Hammond tore down an airfield runway.

He appeared to lose control of the Vampire dragster, which veered off the runway on to the grass before overturning.

In The Sun newspaper, Colin Fallows implied Hammond was to some extent responsible by "failing to adhere to the briefing".

He said: "Mr Hammond had a puncture and carried on with the tyre deflated", adding he "stood on the brakes" after the blowout.

Mr Fallows added: "Once these cars are in motion you don't touch the brakes. You stay on the prescribed line and should always be aware of the unexpected.

"By failing to adhere to the briefing, what would have been a controllable incident ended in a major accident."

The crash occured while 36-year-old Hammond was filming a stunt at Elvington airfield in York last September.

He suffered brain injuries and there were fears he would not survive. He says he has no memory of the accident.

Hammond, nicknamed Hamster, watched it on last night's edition of Top Gear with co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

The father-of-two was asked by Clarkson why he had attempted a final run after reaching speeds of 314mph - the fastest anyone has ever travelled on land in Britain.

Hammond said: "I dunno. That run we just watched was at about five o'clock and we had the runway until 5.30pm.

"I suppose it's like when you were playing outside as a kid and then your mum called you in for dinner. You'd always stay out for a bit longer..."

Interesting. There is no mention of a puncture anywhere else and the degradation of the tyre happened in 0.4 of a second. I fail to see how Hammond could have spotted it.

Going from the interview last night, I thought there were no brake pedals? :?

i think there's a brake pedal which is applied when the car is stationary and released at time of igniting the engines but thats all its used for. i'm sorry but surely its human reaction, something goes wrong with you car and first instinct is to look for the brake...? maybe i'm wrong

I'd say a blowout at that speed on a front tyre and its game over whatever. I loved the Jade comment, and I can't see how she didn't deserve it, she is a nasty dumb woman, and she made her own bed so to speak.

I think the issue with the drifting is how to convey how a car "feels" to drive. Clarkson was just saying how it was utter fun to drive, trying to convey that stats don't mean everything about a car. Otherwise the car with the biggest hp would just be the best surely?

Agreed, you just have to watch Drag racing to see how bad it can go, and that's at lower speeds!

Not classic TG last night, but glad to see it back with all 3 of them. Kinda feel like they wont be taking those sorts of risks again though.

Top comment about Goody - how she earned her millions shows everything wrong with Britain at the moment.

When it came to the crash scenes and talking about it, both Hammond and Clarkson were clearly emotive. The piece itself was dealt with well.

Shameless and TG only programs i look forward to

That crash was really nasty. Good to see hammond back though!

I noticed the dark strip of tyre rubber on the left hand side of the right tyre (got that?) on the first onboard shot of his first run.

Perhaps the sidewind was forcing the car to put more weight on that tyre, hence higher friction and more heat causing the blowout?

precisely....if the jetcar people had one of their regular pilots/drivers on board he may have been able to react correctly through training and familiarity. Hammond was a novice for that sort of thing so the jetcar lot owed hammond a higher duty of care, so try as they might, they will not be able to say it is legally his fault. there is a h&s investigation ongoing so they will be trying to explain their way out of it.....that is possibly where this comment came from.

How's anybody supposed to spot that ? Accidents happen, get over it.
