Mr Toad

On Saturday, driving up the motorway towards Chester, I think I may have been caught going a little fast. The question is, by what ?
The motorway was almost empty and I had the cruise control on (in the car) set to 90, so in real life about 85 according to the GPS. I saw something on the bridge ahead, and when I got nearer it looked like a police van and a man in a fluorescent jacket. There were 3 tripods set up, one for each lane, with a small device on top of each. I banged the anchors on and got the speed down to just over 50 as I went under the bridge, but think it was a bit too late
Any idea what these things might have been - I'm guessing some sort of laser detector. How would it have registered my number plate ?
