Now this seems to be a bit of a moan to some, but its a deadly serious topic. i don't know if anyone knows the Nottingham district at all, but it seems to be an stupidly unfriendly place for bikes. just doing my daily travel today and i was almost taken off twice, and there was a biker killed this morning 3 Min's away from my house due to a car not paying attention, i don't know the ins and outs of it so i cant comment on that much more.
now im a confident rider, and since my own crash i have been more cautious than a timid cat, people just do not see you, i follow the rules i life saver check every time i need to, my mirrors are checked every time i change anything, HOW HARD IS IT TO SEE A LOUD BRIGHT RED BIKE??? my leathers have a BRIGHT LIME GREEN BAND ACROSS MY CHEST (doesn't really go with the bike but im on very little income lol, )
if all car drivers could have at least a month on a bike they would see the reason we worry, they say we "Think We Own The road" yeah because the ratio from bikes to cars is so high isnt it :?
its dangerous on the road, if its not your average chav in a corsa with a fart box on the back attempting to race you with to impress the ferrits in the back seat, its 4x4's not even caring if your there or not. or not to forget the business estate drivers doing a steady 130mph in any lane at any speed limit
and of course one other thing . . . diesel
I know sometimes bikers and bikes get a bit crazy, but not many accidents are caused by us,
if any one can think of anything else just post it below,
I heard a interesting quote from a chav not so long ago . . "Think bike. . . Think W@nker, they just bounce of my bonnet" I as im sure many of us have Fallen friends due to idiots like this so
lets just say he was told and didnt have a leg to stand on . . . .
Sorry to put a downer on such an amazing community site
i enjoy every minute reading through these pages,
so thanks to everyone.
John L :P
You sound like a broken record
I don't think Nottingham is any worse than anywere else.
Are you in Long Eaton ?

Ive been riding for a year, if I'm repeating things over then I'm sorry but as for experience goes only time builds it, i guess I'm lacking, dicing with death on the road is pretty new to me, I'm sure you can appreciate why i posted that, as a fairly new biker it was just a shock.

I am cool with that

I know, I grew up in Toton. (Live in Colwick now)
Did you do your DAS with Beacon Rider Training by any chance ?
I must say, that "think bike" comment was way out of order and scrotes like that should have their licenses removed.
Its all easy to tar all drivers with the same brush, as it also too easy to stereotype due to the car/vehicle type but its something we shouldn't really do, as bikers and drivers we are stereotyped so should know better*. If all stereotypes of drivers were true it would make it easier for us to tell the idiots on the road from the safe drivers though.
I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but just remember that not all days everyone is out to run you off the road, and if they try just remember you'll be at your destination quicker than them and have a lot more fun :)
*except for BMW drivers who are a law to themselves
In response to your original post, sadly thats the case pretty much everywhere.
You just have to be extra alert to compensate for their ignorance.
I found this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorcycle-Roadcraft-Police-Riders-Handbook/dp/011341143X/sr=1-1/qid=1171372902/ref=sr_1_1/026-1829711-0485232?ie=UTF8&s=books)
really helpful. (News years resolution to do my IAM proper this year)

I'm a fairly new biker too (6months ish), and I live out in the middle of nowhere (north wales). What you see happens everywhere, unfortunately.
Treat everyone (even police cars!) like they're trying to kill you, and you won't go far wrong. However, there's a fine balance between using the bike's power to get away from a situation, and being a hooligan. Personally, I prefer to be on the power than on the brakes, but there are times that I'll sit behind an idiot (that way I have control, not the idiot).

I'd settle for them to get a solid, armoured fist to the face. I can't condone doing it but to be honest I don't think I'd be able to stop myself...
You know when you get that mushroom cloud of rage... That's what I got when I read it. But actually hearing it.... :?

they are amazing at that place,
i don't want to offend good drivers i just had two brown undie moments in about 10 Min's due to ignorance
I am seriously into biking as im sure everyone that uses this site i'm just learning the downsides
and whinging about it lol,

I did my DAS there too, Paul is a top is bloke (I don't know Graham, it was just Paul when I did mine).

I remember he would also point out attractive young ladies whilst we where stopped at traffic lights.
"Ayup lads, mini-skirt at 3 o'clock"
He did say he was going to try and tone down his language as he was getting more female customers. :D
Reminds me of going to college the other day (i live in kent tho :p) was coming down a hill and the road splits into 2 lanes for a roundabout so i took the left lane to take the first exit, as i was coming into the left lane the 4x4 didn't like me going there so tried to actually knock me off! my elbow and boot hit his door and he was looking at me too. have to say woke me up for college

Lyle. No i know i cant possibly comment on your riding as i hav never met you. But i have riden with people who have similar views. And watching thier riding opens up all manor of things. No, noe like being told that thier riding is pants, but what you have to think is how easy are you maiking yourself being seen. Not just a red bike, or green stripped leathers(So not the in thing dahhhling ;)) but your road positioning. Remember, bikes can move a lot quicker than a car. What was not there when they did look in thier mirror, might be there when they move. Simple. MAKE YOURSELF SEEN by good road postion. Id suggest a Bikesafe course, if you think its getting too much for your safety mainly.
Its good having a rant, and hell, im sure that most of the london commuters, could write pages anpages daily about thier ride in, but its just something you shrug off after a while and 'get used to'
I love riding in traffic...it hones the reactions to a sharp point...
Ride safe
Yeah, ok, there are a load of dopey/dangerous car drivers out there, you have to ride defensively, give them a wide berth, and assume no one has seen you, and have a bit of luck as well.
As for fatal accidents, most of the time it's rider error on a dry rural 60mph road.
Oh, and that chav deserves to have someone grab his head and slam his face into his own bonnet for that comment. Shame, I'm a pacifist and don't believe in violence.

Same here, but I'm sure I could open an exception for him.

can hear what your all saying, and as for the leathers my green and black stripe jacket that i got for 40 nickers at The bike show 06 ( and i yes i know all the jokes about the cost and why the were selling it that cheap ) lol, but saying that this jacket has saved my skin, and never ripped, lost a zip but ah well, it was the best £40 investment i have ever made,
i don't try to make exceptions to my riding sometimes it sucks golf balls but i am always alert, but i am now seriously considering taking a rider safety course, . . . a moment of respect to the person who died near me today.....

P.S The Chav still suffers today, picture a general scroat, cap, Burberry skegness market clothes hand down his tackies (probably reassuring himself his willy hasnt dropped off) that limped around for 6 months, and now has knee issues. . . . ama boverd!

Cool, another one to hate motorcyclists even more.
**** him one is one (wrong, but that red mist) thing. That may be *a bit* off the mark, though.

Lyle, send him my way & I'll give him a matching pair :D Wrong or not. Joking about taking bikers out on purpose is worse.
One of the lads in the office one day joked about taking me out on the bike if he ever saw me on the road. Management decided it better to move him to a different office after a conversation :) (and if he ever did think about getting his 4x4 close enough, I'd have no issues putting my armored elbow through his window :) )

Good to hear a new rider taking an interest in improving their riding and safety.
I haven't been on a rider course yet (hope to do one when funds & time allow) but I've read every issue of Bike magazine & it's riding clinic article to analyze my own riding since I passed 3-4 years ago.
Unfortunately I've just realised that because I'm male & I've just hit 25, I'm now statistically more dangerous.

You've hit how many?!! :D
I do go out of my way to be polite to anyone who lets me out of a side road or in from filtering. I've luckily had very few incidents so far of drivers doing blatantly stupid things on my bike commute- partly 'cos I did the same route in a car for 14 months and started playing guessing games on who was gonna do something stupid even back then- it really does help the awareness and judgement skills! With 7 schools on my route and being SurreyTractor'sville, I'm surprised I've not suffered worse yet and fervently hope I don't,
If I ride worse when I'm a bit nervous & twitchy (still a newbie on the bike), I dread to think what I'd be like when livid... :x

I gotta say, I am put off riding at busy times because of people who just dont look. Theres nothing you can do but be as safe as you can, keeping your distance and letting people who want to get past, past (if you can). If I have to ride when its busy, I take my time. I've got a few years of riding experiance, what with having a scooter and its better being on a big bike, thats for sure. I found that when i rode the scooter, people just assumed you where riding slow, so in a 50mph zone, where I was doing 50, people assumed I was doing 30mph and would pull out.
I've seen people reading maps in their cars, one guy was reading notes for a meeting or something on his way to work (i gave him a toot) and there are countless people I've nearly been taken out by who just pull out suddenly of the traffic and turn off to a side road without checking their mirrors and blindspot properly.
The best bit of advice my dad gave me with regards to my road saftey was to make eye contact with someone looking to pull out of a junction. If you dont make eye contact, they havnt seen you so continue to go slow and keep those brakes covered!
As for the chav comment, that was out of order and not funny. Maybe to him, his thick bints and his pathetic mates, but to those of us who have been taken out by a car or known people taken out by a car, its not funny.
And I keep my distance from boy racers aswell. with 33bhp, I know I wont win. So whats the damn point?

"They just bounce off my bonnet"? .....
...I must admit that I'd be sorely tempted to have him inspect said bonnet for himself after that.
Garry:roll:
Had to re educate someone today, the guy who`s been driving my transit for me for 2 years (never bothered with my car test but need a transit for work), the same guy i`ve been mates with for 22 years and the same guy that knows i`ve been biking on and off for 17 years. i feel really old now! Anyway, on the way to work while following a moped Nelly asks "how much room does this guy want?" bare in mind he`s trying to overtake the ped on a right hand corner. my reply "as much as he/she wants/feels is nessary to get round the corner" i then pointed out the dubious move and the L plate. I mean how stupid to slate someone on 2 wheels when he has a biker sat next to him :-#
