Hovis....

On your XP machine there is Microsoft Photo editor... open it in that, then select, File, Saves As, and in the 'Save As type' box select 'gif'.

Its Avatar too...

Are there layers to switch on and off in each frame?

Btw: bear in mind that your creation has to be less than 24 KB in filesize....

Kewl :D If you're going to use that as your avatar though you'll need to shrink it...

"its width can be no greater than 140 pixels, the height no greater than 150 pixels"

Space hog...

;)

Edit:  I just looked at the filesize...

Hovi5, it's massive, it's not going to fit. ;)

The filesize is about 20 times too big.

i know?..............how do i make it smaller?

Half the width and half the height and you'll have a file 1/4 the size.

Remember that every frame you add is the same as adding another image to your file.

The file in the post above is a .jpg file. This format doesn't support animations.

.gif is the only file format that web-browsers can read which supports animations.

Also, you need to sort out the timings in the .gif file you are using as your avatar. It's rolling over a bit too quickly and viewers can't see the alternative image. We can in Grinch's avatar.
