Thought I'd keep the book stamped up for the warrentee, so I took my trailbike in for its first annual minor service. Now changing the oil on a trailbike is possibly as easy as it gets, a one spanner job in Haynes terms.
So, for changing the engine oil, checking the tyre pressure, overlubing the chain with what looks like waste oil, and adding 7 miles onto the clock, what do you reckon?
Now my mental calculator says 'bet I get charged a whole hours labour for that'
My bill says two hours, enviromental, workshop, top price oil, etc etc (plus VAT), that'll be £134 sir.
Puts my cambelt and guides change on car (a big job) at £190 (inc parts) into perspective. I might even smile when I pay car serviceing charges from now on.
My Z750 is almost due its first service at 4000 miles - apparently all they are going to do is "check" the brakes - thats it, not even an oil change! This is taken from the horses mouth that is the Kawasaki Service Manual - bet I get charged over £100 for the privelidge too... :roll:
My last service on my car (50,000 mile Honda Accord) which also included the replacement of the rear disks and pads (I couldn't get the calipers off :oops:)
Cost me £585 :cry:

'kin ell! I'm glad I did most of mine myself, and got a local guy to mess with the engine internals.

Just be glad you don't own a Ducati cos none of you have come close to the amount i was charged for my last service and the bikes only done 3000 miles.:roll:

Go on e.d. give us a hint, I've been crying everyday since I pay for my last one, it'd be nice to know that there is someone elese out there which can understand this pain:smt056

The last service I took my ZX in for was 16 000 miles - £790 - thanks and good night. It did include chain & sprockets, back tyre & valves but still :roll: I now do everything myself
Ah, that's better a pain shared is a pain halfed!
just had a phone call from the machanic grand total £400 for 15000 service
inc C&S, braided hoses, clutch cable, front pads(as the guy i got it off only fitted new pads on 1 side?), stripped calipers & new seals (brakes were toast)

Think ill carry on doing my own servicing. Nothing is that difficult on a bike, at least its accessible unlike a lot of cars these days. I just keep the receipts of stuff ive bought for the bike and make a log of when the service was done myself. That way it can be shown to a potential buyer at the end
Was that at P&H by any chance?

Well unless you have 4 left thumbs and an absolute utter zero rating of faith in your own mechanical ability (me).
At least I know that if they (a bike shop) does something really stoopid and buggers me up that after 3 or 4 months of shouting they may well come clean and fix it, however if I bugger it up then i cant really do much.
No aptitude, no practical knowledge and no faith = Bike Shop.
Though truly I would much prefer to fill a mates fridge with beer to do it for me than pay the shop once the warranty expires.

i agree with robchester, the sv is quite easy to work on so i'll be doing my own and not paying anyone.

See previous comments on P&H. They're fine to buy a bike from, good prices, lots of choice etc. But don't you ever let one of their mechanics lay a finger on it - terrible work, and the prices are out of this world.

It was a tad under £700, that was for
1. Cambelt change
2. Service
3. Drill out seized bolt on battery carrier
4. Strip clean and re-built front brakes
5. Battery test
6. Remove clean and refit coils
7. Setup fueling on bike as it was complete mess as previous owner had a race can on the bike and re-fitted the standard can and didnt change the fuel map so that bike was running like a bag o sh*t.
Oh and the labour charge was less per hour than the Suzuki dealer I take my Gixer to

I second that. had a rear tyre fitted by them and only noticed that they'd snapped off most off most of the chain adjusting bolt when i got back to work 160 miles away grrr
I've done all my servicing since I got my SV in October. Hardest thing was to change the seized up choke cable. I've got a well fitted out garage so It's not so hard for me. Working on the sv is relatively easy actually. Bloody bits are expensive though.
It's too bad we are all so spread out. It would be good to get a special tool club going but it's a non starter when the users would be so spread out.
I pay the very nice people at essentail rubber in north london to do my tyres, and the last chain & sprocket kit.
Everything else I do myself. There's a time and a place for dealer servicing but I would say that there's very little I can't do now, so I use my local bike shop for MOTs & parts only:D

Always use a bike shop for everything, after all it's their neck on the line if something goes wrong when the bike is going along......................

Because it was sat in a dealers for nearly a year not being used. The previous owners just havent ridden it either. This is what happens when you dont ride your bike much things stick and seize up and it quietly rusts away to itself and because nobodies using it, nobody notices the litle things that need doing and then they turn into big things that cost money to get put right.
