I have finally convinced my housemates to chip in and get the internet in our house. Three of us have either a laptop or a PC so it makes sense. Does anyone know who's doing the best deal at the moment and am i right in thinking that we'll need to get a wireless router if we all want to use the net at the same time?

You will need a router/modem. The router bit is what allows you all to access t'internet simultaneously. The modem bit handles the communications over phone line / cable to you ISP.

You only need wireless if you don't want to have cables trailing round the house. If you use wireless, secure it and install a good firewall on your laptop.

I got Be There ADSL a couple of months ago, which I'm pleased with. £25 setup fee, £24 a month and for that you get a wireless router supplied to use with rather nippy 24mb connection

Not sure if it's the very best deal, but it's damn fast.

I'm with bethere the same as Jordan.

If you have cable Virgin Media are doing a 2 for 20 deal with TV & Broadband for 20quid a month, or 30 with a phone line. Looks like a good deal.

Probably should have mentioned that we don't have a landline in the house and we don't have sky or cable. In fact we've only just got ourselves electricity.

I'm with Be and have just asked to cancel my service as I don't achieve speeds higher than 8MB

you can get a deal for 8MB unlimited downloads for less than £24 a month

You will need one or the other.

Out of the two, cable is proberly cheaper to get installed. I seem to recall BT asking between 70 - 90quid for installation of a new phone line.

No idea on what there internet secivice is like though.

It should only be £75 if there has never been a connection there. i think its to cover the bt costs when the line was originally installed, it's therefore related to first use of the line...

So you have to pay an extra £11PM because you don't have a phone line?

nah we got the phone line installed. we're in a brand new house, so luckily our landlord paid to have the line installed (over £100). But if there was a phoneline before, I think you can have it turned back on for about £20 or something like that.

U can have a phone line installed, for internet use only, and not have a phone! Speak to BT. They were surprisingly helpful.

You have to get a phone line or cable. In some limited areas there are (truly) wireless providers, but you need to get thier special receiving equipment installed. Basically you need a data connection to the workldwide web and that normally involves wires.

If your internet use is relatively light and you truly do not want a 'house phone', you can investigate a 3G data card that plugs into a slot in your laptop. These run at up to 512Kbps, so not as fast as phone or cable, but fast enough for browsing and emails. Slightly more expensive to buy and you need a new contract.

If you can get cable, you just buy a broandband connection, that will give you your internet without the requirement to also buy a phone line. Do not get a telephone as part of your cable service. Instead get a SIP VoIP ATA to which you can connect a telephone and sign up for a SIP telephone service such as sipgate. That way you have a telephone that costs you nothing to own and as you have not put any credit onto the account is incomming calls only.

Next the very dodgy part. look on fleabay for dbox or similar. Work that part out for yourselves I am not going to tell you what it will give you.

If you have nothing, then perhaps go for a talk-talk package ...

http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/servlet/gben-home-Home

The cool thing (for your situation) is inclusive free calls ... so it doesn’t matter if you girls want to talk for hours on the phone, it is all inclusive 8) ... you might have to have a pillow fight over who is next in line to use it mind!?! :D

Had Pipex originally bought router and 3 USB adapter for the 3 pc's total cost about £140.

Chaged to Wanadoo (that was - now orange) ok worked well but not cheapest

Back with Pipex Homecall cheap package with phone so BB cost just £6/month.

Should be fast but ain't - in fact diabolically slow but could be my security - ZA fire wall and Win... something... virus. Real pain

Doesn't help saying which best one but might help you see what to avoid!!:(

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I will see which option the girlies want to go for. It's quite mind boggling how much you have to think about just to get the bloody internet installed!!!!

I believe Virgin have just bought NTL/Telewest? Have a look at either the Virgin website or the Telewest website, their bundles of phone and/or internet and/or TV are pretty good and when I got my Telewest sorted, it was a piece of cake.
