With the AR coming I just realised I havent possesed a tent since I was a boy scout (i.e a long time ago in a galaxy far far away...)

What I need is something compact and bijou that I can put in a rucksack and sleeps one six footer without having me feet sticking out the end!

As cheap as possible.

What you got??

TIA

How's this (http://www.tents-direct.co.uk/show_tent.php?productid=921)?

Sleeps 2 (supposedly), packed and bungee'd, it'd be small enough to fit on the bike.

Unpacked, 6.8ft long (and you can always sleep diagonally).

£20 seems more in my price bracket thinking.

Don't intend on having a party in it, just want something to keep the weather out....

Still interested in a second hand one though, but thanks for the advice so far.

The £15 one looks good. I'll be off up there tomorrow.

Do they MEAN disposable on the £8 one, as in use it throw it away? surely not?

Or is it camping speak, like I say its been a while.....

Not sure I want to be in a £20 tent if it gets windy / rainy. If you intend keeping it, go for something a little more expensive (still sub-£50). My lad paid £46 for a Gelert tent that has handled a load of trips over last two years and is still waterproof. Will ask him tonight what model.

Gordon B
19-02-07, 03:21 PM
OK, a new perspective.

So, cheap and cheerful and gets blown away in the middle of the night or pay a bit more and re-use it again and again....

At the end of the day its all down to the Financial Director anyways.....

My lad's tent is the Mongoose 2 (http://www.gelert.com/products/Mongoose_2.aspx). The good thing is the packed up size and weight. These folks (http://www.evanscamping.co.uk/) do em for a reasonable price.

I got a Gelert Mercury II. Not the most expensive, but should be adequate for a british summer. I too remember my days of the boy scouts and camping in force 10 tents. But I can't afford that sort of thing for a couple of days a year.

The last time I slept under canvas, was many years ago in France whilst on my Motor Martin CBX. It poured down on the way back and we decided to pull off the autoroute just north of Lyon. My cheap waterproof tent was not that waterproof, great for shade in Antibe, but crap for rain. So this time I bought something a little more showerproof.

Sorry Viney, but for the love of God please avoid this tent (if you can call it that) like a painfull dose of the clap. The brother-in-law bought one for a camping trip last year and they truly are a waste of money. He woke up soaking wet even though it wasn't raining due to it being single skined and having sweet FA when it comes to adequate ventilation.

Seriously, I'd advise spending a little more and getting a good quality tent, then at least you won't have a rubbish night sleep and end up hating the trip.

You can get some really, really good tents for £30 if you are prepared to shop around, just don't touch the cheapy nasty Argos budget stuff.

What you want is a Gelert Fossa 1. They're one man, under 2.5 kilos weight, fit in an oxford soft pannier, and they're under 20 notes. I've just bought a new one after my last suffered *cough* damage. Lots of use and it's strong and waterproof, easy to put up, and easy to pack.

I've got of those £8 tents, it's survived 3 festivals so far: fiberfib (Spain) twice and Pinkpop (Holland) once. It was fine in Spain but rather chilly in Holland. I don't think I'd be brave enough to use it in the UK.

It's about 350mm by 150mm packed I'd say. panniers can stay on the bike, tank bag under my head as a pillow and leathers under my sleeping bag.

Sorted.

pm mr toad.. he had one that was well cheap..

it was ace and I think he just binned it after Ar06 save carrying it home..

truly disposable

that pro action one (like a straight jacket) is like the one jonboy had-- if I recall he had to smother himself in vaseline to slide in it at midnight !!... must be piece of cake to carry on the bike though eh

Cronos managed to fold all six foot plus of himself into something that resembled a carrier bag on AR06. No idea what it was, but he claimed to have slept well and kept dry.

I've got one. It's certainly small and light. I find it a bit too cramped, but I am a fat old b*stard. I've also got a larger, cheap 3-man jobby I bought for £25 when Littlewoods closed down. It's done me two years.

Have you had a look at ebay ?????????

I've just opened up another browser window and had a quick look, currently 1125 tents for sale. I bought a 2 bedroom 4 man tent last year for using on the bike and I can just get it on (we have to put it on the back of the wife's fazer as it has a decent "ar*e end" for it to sit on. I'm well happy with it.

Have a look at millets the camping outdoor types people shops, a couple of years ago I got a 3 man dome tent with 2 sleeping bagse FREE !!!!!., and that tent fits on the bike no worries.:smt023

A word of warning about a single skinned tent, a mate borrowed a little 2 man single skinned tent from me to go to Donnington MOTOGP in 2004, we were going to stay Sunday night as well and ride home on the Monday, but his tent became an indoor swimming pool so he had to go home on the Sunday:( , make sure that if you do get a tent you get a double skinned one.

I also have a 2 man double skinned one by "camping gas", which I got from a caravan showroon, it survived a howling gale on SKYE not so long ago, not only waterproof, but didn't blow away like one of my mates. We came back to find only 2 out of 10 pegs were holding it down, it made a lovely FLAG, blowing around in the wind !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hackedoff:

I find a good sleeping bag makes a cheap tent a hell of a lot better as long as it's not so cheap it lets the water in :)

I've got a 2Man tent (will find the model later) for £80 that's done me wonders and still packs up small enough to carried on the bike.

Use it for weekends out airsofting a few times a year.

I have this one

http://www.simplyhike.co.uk/ProductDetails.aspx?StockID=8982

Okay so it's alot of money but for the UK weather it really is needed. It has coped with evrthing from virtually sub zero temps up to 25deg at night and never struggled. it has loads of vetilation so it never get clammy inside and best of all to put it up you put the outer skin on first so if it is raining when you put it up the inner skin stays dry in the bag while you make yourself a cover. It also has a huge porch so if you are sharing you have plety of room to leave all your gear aswell as sleep as i've found as a biker with leathersn plus clothes etc you will need twice the persons space per person so a couple will need a 3-4 man tent and 1 person will need a 2 man tent IYSWIM?

I've got a 2 man Eurohike tent that i got from Millets years ago. The tent itself is still good n waterproof - though it has got a small pinhole in the base. Only lets water in if it's pouring down with rain so hard it streams along the ground under the tent.

A simple cycle tyre repair thingy will sort it out - only I can't be arsed to try and find out where the leak is again.

I've got a bigger tent for events (which I don't go to at the moment anyway) and a much smaller one for touring so this one is up for grabs if you want it.

The best 1 man tent is a 2 man tent. Trust me. You find that out when its wet and so is all your kit your snuggled up with.

Unless you might want it for backpacking there's plenty of room on a bike for a decent sized tent.

For cheap Ive seen the basic domed Eurohikes around £20 stand up to foul conditions.

Either go real cheap or expensive. All these complex middle range things that are fairly cheap are rubbish, and might not stand summer lakeland storms.

Whoever was saying about having a party in a tent, that might be mine!

4-man dome tent that I bought from Argos (yes really, Argos!) about 5 years ago. 4-man is a bit optimistic, it sleeps 3 pretty comfortably & has a porch-style thing at the front to keep gear in. It's so far survived Glastonbury festival, torrential thunderstorms in the alps, heavy downpours & gale force winds in the lakes, and plenty of ****ed people stumbling into & out of it  - i think it cost me all of £40!!

Just hoping it packs up small enough to fit on the bike...

I got a 1 man £30 tent for £15 when argos changed catalogs a few years ago (Pro-action I think) that has kept me dry for 2 cadwells (BSB's). Quality isnt brilliant but it packs up tiny and has kept me dry so far.
