View Full Version : Anyone keep tropical fish?
Got a load of guppies that are surplus to requirement. If you have a tropical tank and want some guppies let me know and I'll bring a few along on Wednesday. And before anyone starts getting smart, no, they are far too small to eat. They are between 0 and 3 months old. They'll be fine in a bag for a couple of hours but if you're turnng up on a bike you'll need a rucsack as they tend to make rubbish pillions.
Do they need to go in a tropical tank Mark? Or can they make it in a normal fish tank?? My son has a fantail and a couple of other small tropical fish - but the tank isnt heated.
Pretty sure they need a heated tank. Unless you have a very warm house and the water is over 20degrees. Or a heater is about £10 but then it depends if your other fish can cope with a warmer tank.
I'm pretty sure they dont need a heater to survive...

Guppies are a tropical fish and they will need a heater.
They need 20 degrees. If a room is maintained at 20 degrees or above they survive without a heater (eg, in Thailand they live in people's water features to keep mosquitos down), but typically in this country they need a heater/thermostat. However this is about £10 and dead easy.
We must of had icelandic Guppies...
I have a heater in the cupboard as I was going to get some more tropical fish once the Fantail passed on. I just checked though and it should be ok up to 23c - so yes please I will have a few (max 5 if you have loads).
No probs. Let me know once you've got it set up and the temperature stabilised.
Buy some african chiclids, and your over-reproducing guppie problems are fixed!
I've moved onto Marine fish and Coral, but I started with Guppies a long time ago.
Chiclids are a bit too fussy for me. Probably get an angel fish to "prune" then take back to fish shop each time they get too big as it's only a 2 foot tank.
Currently got about 20-30 fry who have somehow made it to semi-maturity seems there's nothing agressive enough in the tank to keep the numbers to a manageable level. The platties give it a go but do not seem sufficiently comitted to the task.
At this rate I'll have a two foot cube solid block of guppies in the next six months so need to introduce some controls. Don't really want to do away with them entirely as they are pretty much bullet proof and with a two year old banging on the glass reselience is an important character trait.
Mark if you still have some guppies we'll quite happily take some off your hands let us know how much you want
Tara
Free to good homes. Got some ready to go now and will have a few more in a month or so as they are too small to transport at the moment. You after them as "pets" or "food for larger pets" ?
For some reason they all look like females at the moment but it may just be they are too young to be told apart. Or some are cross dressing males.
These do need a "tropical" setup with water at 21-26 degrees. One of Falc's earlier posts suggested you kept them in an unheated tank previously. I do take the "good home" bit seriously so need to know they'll be looked after.
Should be able to take them to Ely or Links (work/snow storms permitting) if you're going this week.
We have a tropical tank Mark, don't worry ;)
They all look like females when they are young, its just the species. But yer we are happy to take some little fries off your hands now if you dont mind. We will have a pub meet this week around this area so prolly Ely or the likes.
Just want them as pets to boost the numbers in the tank at the moment.

T/F - we recently bought a tropical tank from a friend and have a few guppies spare too if you'd like?
i'm loving this whole fishtank thing, there's so much going on! just got some shrimps this weekend, they're like fat prawns and make me laugh when they scuttle about :D And we've got one of those upside-down catfish as well
what have you guys got living in your tanks?
Yer sure, the guppies are not for us but for my parents who keep them, im not entirely down on all the species there but got some neons, big sucker fish and guppies already, theres prolly more but cant remember the makes and models

I used to keep tropical fish when i was in my teens. Want to get some more but James said no :(
But then i would keep a zoo if i was allowed :D
I love tropical fish whether or not i get a tank for the new place depends on whether Falc lets me he keeps saying there isn't enough room. If i got rid of all his computer games...)
the guppies are for Falc's mums tank she has a tropical tank
Thanks
Tara

My platies had babbies, but I didnt notice quick enough and alot of the fry got gobbled up, oops...
You could have them if you want them as when they grow full size I'm going to be overstocked, which I dont want. I'm probably going to take them to the local fish shop and see if they'll exchange them for fish food or something like that, bit of a way for you to trek though for free fish...
Oh and once you have one tank you'll want another...

OK your on but can you wait til we move and we'll come and get them
Thanks Fizz:D
I need some more fish... down to one guppy now. :-( Though I can't make it to fleet, will just have to pick up something local.
Quite a few bikers who keep fish as pets, must be a unique thing...

OK I'll keep an eye on them, they are wayy to small to transport at the moment, but they'll be OK for a couple of months where they are I would imagine.

oo i used to keep tropical fish makes me want to do it again  , but i know i would never really keep on top of it again once the honeymoon period wore off. I do now have 20 koi carp im my garden. hey you should all post pics of your fish??
So Falc and Tara def going to be at the links Wednesday? Assuming I get home from work at a sensible time and can catch the blighters I'll pop in with a few. They should be OK in a bag for a couple of hours. Or would you rather organise something for another evening when you're off to your parents.
Let me know your preference.
Also, last time I turned up did not see anyone. Where do you plan to be hiding this time?

What time did you turn up last time? We were in a corner by the window to the left of the entrance. We were in disguise (no biker gear), until Gmonsta turned up and blew our cover.

Mark's guppies are doing really well. The one and only male is enjoying his hareem.
Although the new angelfish :nemo: :fish: will polish off any guppy fry :(
