View Full Version : BMI, baby!
No.......not aeroplanes ;)
I've lost a little bit of weight recently, mainly due to getting more active (training/coaching a kids team twice a week and play 5-a-side for an hour on a Sunday evening).
Just calculated my Body Mass Index (BMI) using this tool (http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/healthy_living/your_weight/bmiimperial_index.shtml):
Jabba's BMI = 24.45 :D
What is your BMI? Please be honest, and please don't post derisory comments about others, be they sylph-like or be a bloater ;)

You are in the range that is classified as obese and your health would greatly benefit from a life-long reduction in weight.

However, I have tried to put on weight but cannot, and I eat healthily - I am healthy!

I do agree with Hovi5 the BMI is only a very very rough guide.
My BMI is 23.45.
I used to have some of those Tanita scales (ones that measure your fat percentage using electrical resistance) and I was 13% fat.
Anyone know how acurate these things are ?

the calipers are the best.
if you want to lower you BMI with mimimal effort....try this one

The calipers are the best.
Just to play devils advocate:
But surley calipers will only measue subcutaneous fat, not fat in the abdominal cavity (very common in males) and fat around the internal organs ?

21.32 But it does not take into account water retention, time of month (for the ladies obviously) or even your gender. Can't be very acurate in my opinion ? bit of fun though ....... I think in truth unless we have issues and psycological problems about our weight, we pretty much know where we stand .... ie fat on tum, bum, to skinny, not enough muscle etc..... we know our own bodies better then some computer ?
not telling:smt087
Its above 25 tho:smt087 :smt087 :smt012 :smt012
Need to exercise more....
29.79 - Will do something about it next week when I'm not so busy...

You are in the overweight range.

22.13. As said before not accurate as doesnt take into account of gender, build etc. (I'm still happy though! :D )

I'm with Hovi5 on this (dang, twice in one day!), I would have to get to a weight a stone less than I was when running triathlons (ok I did 2!) to have good BMI.
My lad is as fit as a butchers dog, has a six pack and all that, low fat % and his BMI according to this is 25.09, borderline overweight!
Them calipers hurt though :smt089

True, a mate who is a doctor was explaining to me that there is some far better method (forget the name) and that because of his build (short, but very muscular) he would actually have to be dangerously undernourished to ever fall into the "ideal" band.
I'm 28 and losing weight ever so slowly, BTW.
24.18, just in the ideal weight cat somehow, still need to lose weight :(
Mine is 27.16 - Overweight
Whatever.

As many people have mentioned above BMI's not all that good.
What's far more important is truncal fat (ie a large waist is far more significant than having a big bum/thighs/arms etc.).
Being obese in this area is far more significant, because it's as a result of intra-abdominal fat (that is fat inside the belly). This fat is more metabolically active, and is therefore far more likely to contribute towards a huge number of conditions (namely type 2 diabetes).
More realistically, again as said above, most people know when they're overweight, and if/that something ought to be done. Most people have difficulty getting/keeping the motivation.
Well that's my excuse for a raised BMI, & I'm sticking to it ;) .
20.46
You are in the healthy weight range.
