Well guys and gals,

My SV and me have now parted company. I tried everything but the tendonitis on my wrists would not go away.

I had my first ride on it just last week (been on the cbr all winter). Lasted half an hour before I had to come home again due to the pain. Left it a few days and back on but pain came back.

Sat her back in the garage and had a heart to heart. She took it very well and agreed it was best for both of us. :(

But....

I NOW HAVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tried it, hated it... All noise and no comfort.....

And please people, there's nothing wrong with IL4's, it's all about application of available power (that's "how you ride it" to simple folk....)

Nope nothing wrong with IL4's - unless they're below 750cc!

600 IL4's belong in a drama school, the pipes sing falsetto like they've been kicked in the balls and the gear levers are the best tap dance tutorial a biker can get.

I'm only kidding really, I don't dislike them that much, and can see why those that have them love them, but they are just not for me.

There is a wee bit of truth in the drama school thing, and the fact that some IL4's, are so damned good at what they do that they loose all character. If I wanted a journey to be so smooth, comfortable and refined, then I'd take the car.

V-Twins have passion and involvement. Yes, I would love a Ducati, and if I had the money to keep a bike that I'd only ride on the hottest day of the year, I'd have a Harley too.

There was plenty of character when it was cranked over yesterday on the way to Glenshee. Oh...and there's only a 3mm poof hoop left.

There may be passion with an SV (note I dont say v-twin) but involvement??? Riding every road in 3rd gear and never using the brakes is hardly involvement. Isn't that why SVs are so good as a beginners bike - becuase there's so little involvement.

Falsetto??? I'll Falsetto ye :smt066 If I remember correctly, last ice cream run my old m reg 600 was one of the loudest beefiest bikes there.

Nah...slag off my 600 all you want.I dont care cos I've ridden both for a year and I know best. Give me gearchanging, downshifting, cornering, powerbands and pain free wrists any day. :p :p :p

There will always be difference of opinions between bikes but lets keep it friendly yes? Personally I did find your comment Ralph 'Nope nothing wrong with IL4's - unless they're below 750cc! 600 IL4's belong in a drama school' rather offensive and unnecessary but you are entitled to your own opinion.

CBRs are great bikes, I had one briefly after the SV and its difficult to compare them as they are such different bikes. I love my gixer to bits and am having great fun with it. Not everyone's cup of tea but its certainly mine. And it has a great sound to it too.

I'm only kidding really, I don't dislike them that much, and can see why those that have them love them, but they are just not for me.

My first big bike ie: over 250cc (not actually mine but on long term loan) was a CBR600F. The pal who had it bought a fireblade when they first came out, but couldn't bring himself to sell his first big bike and couldn't be bothered waiting for me to catch up on rideouts, so he gave me the 600. I had it for about 12 months.

I've never said its not a good bike, I've said it's not for me. It is a very very good bike, almost perfect in fact, and therein lies my issue. IN MY OPINION bikes have to have some faults, unless you don't do much mileage in which case every time you ride them it's exciting anyway.

I'm babysitting a Bandit 600 at the moment, its a celebration with renthal bars and on a back lane thrash it can be a great bike, as will a CBR, but for the daily commute it's just plain boring. On the mundane daily rides a bike needs some faults just to remind you that riding is exciting, it adds to the experience of biking and makes it worthwhile. I enjoy my ride to work on the SV whatever the weather, but on the Bandit, if it rains I wonder why I didn't take the car.

On the last rideout we were drooling over a Gixxer thou at Cupar, and somebody (sorry whoever it was I can't remember!) came up and said forget it! On these roads you'll have more fun thrashing the hell out of your SV. And you know what, he was damn right!

Feck sake...pick your toys up colin. I wasn't having a dig at you.

I had 3 smilies at the end of my post to show it was in good spirits. No need slag me off.

I do know best BUT I meant for me alone.

As for my experience - In 7 months I did just under 10k on the SV in every weather including ice and snow. I think I've earned every right to give my opinion on it. You can ride everywhere on the SV in 3rd gear and rarley use the brakes. The most popular bike for new riders is the SV because they are less involving than an IL4. Suzuki say it, Cupar say it, it, all the magazines say it, internet reviewers say it, instructors say it and since I've owned both - I'm saying it! The major involvement IMO is fighting with the suspension.

I loved my SV. My SV unfortunately didn't love my wrists and that is the only reason I sold it. I have never slagged it off and never will.

I'm with Kate - I thought the drama school thing was pretty offensive.

At the end of the day - no one's asking you to like my new bike. I've never slagged your bike off so if you don't have anything positive or good humoured to say about it then keep it to yourself.

The veterans here (Dean, etc) will remember my mate who once came along for a run on a tuned CCM supermoto?? I think Dean remembered him getting the back end sliding out on a tight corner:rambo: :rambo: And I mean full lock power sliding on a supermoto on the open road:smt011

Well he sold his ZX6R and bought a 54 plate Honda CBR600RR. Minimal comfort, but it doesnae half go like hell.. he's already got the pegs scraping.... he might be coming along if the weather holds.

Stuarty - for your wrists, you've picked the correct bike. That's a comfy bike. I don't get any wrist ache on the ninja apart from long periods in town filtering or slow traffic.

Me neither! Works in a hospital. Knows the male anatomy far too well. Might get kicked in more places than just the butt!

OK, OK, sorry Stuart. I shouldn't have posted this morning when I'd just got out of my pit with a headache (got a flu/fever!), I read the words, missed the :D and fell into the first trap of forum posting, no tone of voice and no facial expression, so I apologise. Lets turn this back into a debate about bikes and have have less of :smt066 and less of :compcrash:.

I'm a bit surprised a couple of folk found the drama school analogy "offensive", especially when followed by the words "I'm only kidding". Maybe wind up Stuart (we've joked about 2 vs 4 plenty times before) and spark off a bit of banter, controversial and kick off a wider debate perhaps, but not intended to be offensive. It was just an analogy to say that I prefer the sound and torque characteristics of a V-Twin. I'm not the kind of rider that likes to thrash a bike to get it cooking. But obviously some took offense, in which case in their world it was offensive, so for that I also apologise.

So formalities over with....back to CBR vs SV650.....

Other than the offensive analogy (which was a joke) I've not slagged off the bike, I'll see it on Sunday and from the photos I'm sure it will be lovely. I think I've made it very clear in all my posts that I don't think its a bad bike, in fact if I was commuting into London every single day and needed a refined comfy bike I'd might even buy one, but although it'll scratch back roads at the weekend with the best of them, for me there would still be something missing that puts a smile on my face. If I dare to put it in car terms, it's a bit like the difference between an Audi and an Alfa Romeo, one's got perfection, the others got soul.

Stuart - think you've misunderstood what I meant by involvement. I meant the way the cylinders thump at tickover, the vibration, the noise. Some IL4's are just too refined for my liking, I like an engine to remind me that it's there, not just tickover serenely, and you'll find a lot of v-twin fanatics and BMW riders will say the same.

Forgetting what I meant by involving and lets talk about "involving"! Set up a new poll "are SV's involving to ride?" on this website (where people know the bike), and see the response.

An SV, RSV, VTR or Ducati can go everywhere in third gear, but thats the rider, not the bike, doesn't mean they are not involving. Think you'll find most mag reviews praise the SV for being a budget bike thats able to keep experienced riders well entertained (the boss at Saltire Suzuki has just taken delivery of his new SV thou!). It's good for beginners 'cos its only 70bhp, group 10 insurance, 4 grand and much more involving to ride than other traditional beginner bikes like a CB600 or a Bandit. It's the best bike a beginner can afford. IMHO an SV is not an un"involving" bike. Its impossible compare to IL4's in general as the SV is more involving than a Bandit, but less involving than any Gixxer/R6/R1/<insert your fav race rep here>.

The SV650's flaws are power and suspension, but how much power do you need on Scottish roads? The forks and shock can be changed. Its biggest strength is its low weight and ability to change direction quickly. Thats why many folk buy old ones to keep as track day bikes and bore them to 700cc.

I don't need to ride a Gixxer thou to know the guy was right, I only need to keep the throttle pinned on the SV at one end of a twisty road, and come out of the other end grinning. I haven't chatted much to the guy, but I got the impression he was one of the faster more experienced riders in SV Ecosse (possibly carelesschucca?), who had chosen to stick with his SV rather than get something bigger or heavier. He was right - I couldn't pin the throttle of a Gixxer thou anywhere but on a track day (in which case I'd probably bin it!).

How is the tendonitus going to go away? Im confused. If it was the 'sports' riding position, then why dodnt you just buy a naked bike of some sorts? Suerly it will come back!!

Still, as said, its a Honda!!

Nice lookin bike you got there, There's a helluva lot of people love IL4's.. and about the same again hate them. I thought about buying one recently, went and tried a few out but just could not live with the dead feeling at lower rev's, they are fun once you start to rev the whatsits off them.. even tried out a triple. In the end i decided that i wanted the grunt of the twin insted of having to change gear every 10 seconds and bought a 748  Now I'm in agony after a long run due to the riding position, It's a pig to get comfy on.. but dam It's good fun!!

Enjoy the new toy

Nae worries colin - :smt054 mistakes happen and I'm as guilty as the next guy for being misinterpreted. Rule of thumb with me. If I'm using the "feck" word then instantly think of Dougall from father ted. I'm rarely serious serious.

I thought the :smt066 was a jokey one? Is it? fuctifano?

Anyway....just back from the killers who were interesting.

Anyway.......the tendonitus. It's just in my left wrist now. The right one snapped in one day.

The physio watched me on my mountain bike (no pain), cbr (no pain) but on the SV (agony sometimes). Problem was a combination of the vibration from the bars and the dive and lurch from the suspension. He videod me going round the carpark and when he played it back to me you could visibly see the tendons on my wrist moving over the wrist knuckle. The lurch on pulling away and engine braking was quite noticeable.

It wasn't the sports position - the new cbr is a much more pronounced sports position and I have no problems. Even had a 600rr for a day and no problems either except for a VERY VERY sore ****!

I've been a piper since I was 8 years old and that involves some pretty complex tendon movements - squeezing the bag, very quick finger movements etc etc. He reckons my wrists have "tuned" to higher frequencies over the years. The low freq of the v-twins seems to give my wrists a kind of rubber band effect which causes the tissues round about to swell up.

We tried "damping" the bar ends, different rakes, elevations but still the same pain. I put new springs in which made a slight difference.

I was very reluctant to let the bike go because I spent a fair amount on it. Bungs, can, springs, lowers, mirror extenders - so I had every intention of keeping it for a long while. It just got the better of me in the end and it got to the point that I was losing sleep because of the oain in my wrists.

So...IL4 v SV I'm really enjoying the cbr. Phenomenal machine and I'm sooooo much smoother and quicker. BUT...on the SV there was alway a nagging about when the wrists would start aching again so no doubt it slowed me down.

SV - wins grunt and sound hands down
CBR - wins on turning, suspension and power hands down

I can't have 2 cbrs so there's a ducati out there with my name on it.

I keep trying to get ask my mates for a shot of the bikes (tt600 and a gixer 600) but i havent got the bottle yet to ask properly just to see what all the fuss and difference between an sv and a straight 600.

I love my sv love the fact it has so much engine braking and torque! :D always makes me grin and especially when i leave my flat and open her up along side the front of where i live and hear the noise it makes!! haha!
