View Full Version : Number plate sizing
I want to replace the standard plate with a slightly smaller one. What kind of size should I go for? I dont want it to be too obvious that its not standard size and be pulled by the plod all the time.
Andy
7 X 5 is a "comfortable" size.

thats the size i got but used to have a 6 x 4 and was never stopped, the 7 x 5 is the best option me thinks.

I AGREE
Interesting thread...
I've been thinking about getting a 7x5 & tailtidy...
I'm also looking at getting "SV650.org" on the plate too (properly, not a sticker).

I think I might go for the 7 x 5 because since I got a tail tidy the indicators are very slightly covered by the number plate. Here are a couple of handy sites for number plates

What's wrong with the standard size?
Oh..forgot to add I've got a smaller(came with bike) than standard sized plate. Ideally I wouldn't mind a standard sized plate.
The smaller sized plate will be swapped for a standard sized one for the MOT next month.

Smallest I've ever gone is 8" x 6"... 7" x 5" is too small in this day and age IMHO...

i got a flexi one from these guys. Their website is pretty good as it has a bit about the legalities of letter sizing and spacing too, if youre intrested in that sort of thing that is.;)

Number plate size is governed by font type, size and spacing also must have the makers name and conform to the reflective standards set down by law
The external dimensions are not stated in any law so if you have a personalised plate with less digits you can have a smaller plate providing the former criteria are met. If not take your chances on being nicked

my 7 x 5 has near the correct size lettering, theres no room around the edges for slogans ect.

looks like they are illegal, see page 3 (http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf)
I got 6x4½ on mine, had a police car behind me in traffic once and never got pulled .. doesn't mean the next one won't though. Leaves the rear nice and exposed.
Hovis, this is the stuff from Mal plates, the legal bit:

"The registration must be displayed on two lines and split in the conventional way. Tampering with letter groups is not permitted."
yup........... they are iligal:( ........but so is my 5x7 which IMO will be ok as its not silly small. might not get away with a 9x3 though, i think as long as you dont take the pee you will be ok.

Thats the snag. My 7x5 has the stripe down the side and
Ive wide letters too like a wubbleu so the letters themselves are quite small.
However Im not too bothered as its on a BMW and everyone knows they can only be stopped on Royal Warrant, or at least that's what my uncle the Chief Constable told me at the Lodge.
Ive got 7x5 1/2 but the font is standard size so have just removed the borders. I would have to be very unfortunate to face a penalty with it

From what I've heard - one liners are most likely to get you pulled. Easiest to see they are illegal as you don't even need to get your ruller out.
i agree & once you have been stoped for your plate.... the nice policeman notices your can is "not for road use" & those indecaters look a bit small & there flashing too fast .......wheres your numberplate light & reflector........that tyre looks a bit bald aswell sunny

can doesn't need any markings these days, indicators can blink upto 120 per minute, don't need a number plate light (in daylight) although you do need a reflector.
Cheers Mark.
my point was, once you get stoped for the dodgy plate, your bike may be futher examined for other things:(

Simple solution: Don't have anything illegal on your bike!
