yes, single sided swing arm and a front end that doesnt look like an extra from terminator 3: rise of the machines.
whats with that **** bellow the belly pan? looks like an exhaust that never was. Front disk is nice but would be better if it looked like there were 2 of them.
after that its carbon all round and a blow job included in the price that would make it awesome. (and if it wasnt a yank bike at heart)

I'm sort of glad I didn't actually enjoy riding it much, since otherwise I'd have bought one and sold the SV :)
And also, i reckon this:
http://kenrockwell.com/bmw/images/r1200s.jpg
Is utterly gorgeous. No, don't laugh! It's like a manly 916, made out of boilerplate and scaffolding. Another bike that I'd have considered replacing the SV with, till it turned out the cylinder heads are wider than my garage door.
I agree with you Dr Rich it's the next bike for me if I get rid of the SV:thumbsup:
I agre too - a garage near me has one for sale in the colours below - its gorgeous, real shame that the seat is about as comfy as a piece of wood!

has anyone ridden a buell? what do they think? i sat on one at the motor show, switchgear felt a bit basic and cheap. And they're tiny! Wold love a go on one though :D
Very very tempted to have a go on one - the place that has that Firebolt has just taken in an XB12S and they are quite relaxed about test rides, so I might have to give it a go (but its raining today so I wont!)

I have ridden both the ulysses and 12s lightning (and a blast but that doesn't really count - horrendous little thing). The ulysses is absolutely huge. I'd say you need to be at least 6 foot to be able to touch down properly. Had to pick it up from Chelsea and ride out of london only managing tiptoe on one side sliding half off the seat!
The lightning was much better suited to me, being tiny. It really is a great bike to ride. Fantastic handling. Erik really got it right with his trilogy of tech and mass centralisation (spot some of the current crop of sport bikes putting the exhaust underneath). The only real shame is that he doesn't seem to have the money to back up his theory with quality. Buells break OFTEN. It really isn't just a myth...though watch out for the liquid cooled Buell later this year/early next...a little bird tells me!
gettin2dizzy
24-02-07, 11:42 AM
oh ok. I thought the liquid cooled engine was too big for the buells. The certainly have the air cooled motor secure emissions wise for the next few years. I'd love to see one with the V rod engine in

I had a long go on a City X and a Lightning 12 a while back... (Harley dealers are ace for test drives- "When do you want it back", I asked at 2pm" "Well, we close at 5 but there'll be someone in the workshop till 7pm- just that you'll need to come back some other time to pick up your documents")
Both an absolute blast, I preferred the motor in the City X, but the gearbox and clutch in both were basically broken- incredibly heavy, and neither was keen to go into first when stationary. When really gunning it, the slow gearchange was a killer too, it's like having the best engine in the world attached to the transmission off some 30s thing. I was convinced they were both faulty but the mechanics checked them out and said they were all like that- not something you'd say lightly on a test ride. Put it this way, at the time my SV's clutch mechanism actually was broken, and it was still better. There's aftermarket parts for this though now.
And it is the best engine in the world, for mucking around on and having fun. I've ridden bikes that make about twice the power as the 9, but when that engine's on song it just feels mighty- an R1 never feels that powerful to me, because it's all so effortless, the Buell feels like it's giving everything it has. I only did a 5 minute dual carriageway stretch and it wasn't too good for that, naturally.
I didn't like the seat, I never knew where I was supposed to sit. And tbh, despite the name it wasn't very good in town, too wide, too ponderous at low speeds, and the transmission kneecapped everything- couldn't get it into gaps that the SV takes for granted. Though the SV's a great city bike for the way I ride, so that's not a very fair comparison... Compared with a real city specialist like a Duke 2, it was pretty laughable I reckon.
Other than those complaints, I honestly thought it was stunning... I testrode a Daytona 650 on the same day, and I never gave a moment's thought to buying one of those afterwards, but I kept on checking out that used City X. If I wanted a weekend blast bike, I'd probably have bought one and fixed the faults as far as I could, and call the rest character, and get a loyalty card with Adrenalin-Moto

24-02-07, 12:38 PM
I'd love to see one with the V rod engine in
Funnilly enough, he's always said he's not interested, but in PB last month he said that the V-Rod was originally a Buell project that Harley picked up, and changed so much that it wasn't usable for his original plans. New one by me, but interesting to read. All the innovation's gone out of Buell since the very first XB9 IMO, all we've had since is evolutions, bigger engines, longer or taller shapes...
Erik Buell's quite smart with this, though. If you want a bike like a Buell, what's the competition? Precisely none... It's not massively different from a KTM SM950 or a Speed Triple, I suppose, but neither have exactly the same appeal. The bike looks amazing and handles amazing, but it's totally dominated by the motor, and that makes it unique. With a less characteristic motor, it'd be a pretty factory streetfighter in a market filled with pretty factory fighters. He could go Bimota and build them around other engines, but then he'd be competing directly with those other bikes. So as it stands, he's the undisputed king of a very small market sector, which is enough to sell the bikes worldwide and make a good return.

Loads, I imagine, there's a fair number out there and many are ridden by nutballs :) The bike's very narrow so I think it tends to sit on the tail and the bars.

I did a day at Silverstone with Buell
I got to ride the XB12R, the XB12S and the CityX - all great bikes, awesome brakes & handling. Couldn't get used to the red line at around 5500 rom though :D
I sa one get trashed there - the day was organised by a Hardley dealer, so loads of numpties there who were not used to corners

Hah, shame he let the work experience boy do the headlights :pukel: Stunningly good bikes, but the only parts of them that look out of the run-of-the-mill are the ugly bits I reckon. Lovely swingarm, mind.

The rear view's stunning, once you get rid of those daft cans, but up front it still doesn't impress me... I thought it'd make more sense once I saw one, and it doesn't seem so slabsided in the flesh, but I still reckon it's pretty ordinary. The 916 and even the 999 were something new and exciting, the new one's just a bit bleh by comparison IMO, just another bike.
Put it this way, the 916 was it's own bike, the 1098 will always be the successor, IMO.

Correct. The Testi 1D - revamped (not by much though). You weren't quite right on the engines though.
The lesser model uses the Duke 999R V-twin (around 20k GBP). The 4V version uses the Duke 1000DS (40k GBP).
