View Full Version : Chain maintenance w/o paddock stand
As the title. NOTE: NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, ATTEMPT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Quite impressed with this, the first time I've had the bike off the floor without a paddock stand, and all done by me on me tod :)

Can anyone think of any other jobs I might want to do whilst the bike is off the floor (both wheels are clear of the ground :D)? Other than cleaning it, naturally
That all looks rather precarious...Dont know if I could do that to my bike TBH:(

That looks really preacarious I would not be propping up my pride a joy like that just. Wouldnt it just be better to buy an abba or something like that. Thats an awful big risk IMHO to support your pride and joy on a few blocks of wood, a trolley jack and an axle stand.
I know they are expensive, but so is an insurance claim for fairing damage.
The paddock stand is on order, and the bike is a commuter. The car seriously isn't an option at the moment.
Looks can be decieving. I've actually sat on the bike whilst it's like that to test.
There's wood supporting it at the front of the engine block, at the rear of the engine block, and then the little jack at the back of the swingarm for stability.
About the only other thing to stabalise it would be to put wood under the side stand to stop it leaning over as much.

Its your bike at the end of the day but I wouldnt do it.
Rememeber we get a lot of newbies on here and they might not be so ingenious with there wood propping skills.... ;) :-D

I managed to lub mine up by spraying on a bit of lube, roll the bike forward, spray on a bit more, roll the bike forward...
...my arms are now sore from all the pushing :( and my back hurts :(
But! My chain is shiny clean and lubed

With that in mind, I've just edited the original post to add a warning.
Right, well, I'm now done with the bike for today.
The chain has been adjusted for tightness (axel jack used to put some load on the swing arm with me sat on the bike ;) ), scraped the crap off, WD40 to degrease it a little bit, washed down with water, allowed to dry, and then some Castrol LM grease liberally applied. Happy chain, for now :)
I also took the opportunity to clean the bike  & by god does it look better. Far far far from kwak standards, but you can actually tell the exhaust is made of metal now, rather than mud.
The bike now won't be moving until monday, just in case I got some WD40 near the brakes.
You inspired me to go out and clean the bike today as well...had the autosol out as well, and man those downpipes are clean! I also didnt realise that the endcap on my can could get that clean;)

I used to do that until I found out I'm actually strong enough to lift the back wheel clear off the ground and spin it!

Ok, here's how I do it, I lean on the bike from the side stand side, grab the grab rail with the left hand, push it against me pivoting the bike on the front wheel and side stand (while leaning it against my legs, foot on the side stand) and that will allow me to lift her enough to spin the back wheel with my free right hand. Mine won't tip over enough to make me lose balance, but I'm a heavy sod, YMMV. I guess it's a bit like the spin-the-bike-on-the-side-stand, you either do it easily or you can't do it at all... hth.

I Use Fillipe's method too, pull the bike up on the stand with one hand, spin the wheel with the other, and that's because I'm too lazy to put it on a paddock stand!

How'd you think I got the bike up like that? :D Same method, but I couldn't be bothered lifting, spinning, cleaning section of chain, lifting, spinning, cleaning ad infinium. So instead of spinning with my free hand, I shoved some wood under it.
If you look, the front brake is still bungeed from where I was lifting the rear off the floor, no need for that once it's up ;)

I use a paint brush and engine oil for the chain. Usually every couple of days.
Turn steering to the right
Piece of rope, bungee or WHY on front brake lever
Axle stand at end of swinging arm(right side) to lift wheel off the ground. I use a bit of card board between axle and arm.
Spin, lube, job done. Yes, I have a stand but quicker to do the above.
