Virgin Trains boss Sir Richard Branson said the cause of the train crash which killed an 80-year-old woman was a defective line.

Well thats that sorted then. No need for an investigation.

As a Railway worker myself, I very much doubt Sir Richard said anything of the kind. As a train operator he hopes it was the line which lets his train off but will have to await an investigation taking many days to be concluded. I doubt if the line will be reopened until sometime next week while the Transport Police and various Government safety departments poke around the wreckage

I heard the interview with Branson, and he hinted very strongly that it was a track problem,so much so that I think he must be pretty sure of his ground. We shall see------?

Well he may be right:

The inquiry into the Cumbria rail crash in which one person died will focus on a set of points, investigators say.

He said he had been told that points were to blame, and added it was a "sad day Everyone is going to have to learn from this incident and Network Rail are going to have to look at this track problem and make sure nothing like this ever happens again," he said.

The chief executive of Network Rail, John Armitt, acknowledged that there might have been a points failure.

Either way, until the accident investigators finish its all speculation.
