View Full Version : new back tyre advice
my mate just pointed out i need a new back tyre as its squared off (done about 3000 miles) i have road attacks front & back.
as its the first & only tyre i have had i cant compare it to anything.
so do i get another or try somthing new(what) as it seems evry one says differant?
edit i have done 3000 miles & the tyres were put on just b4 i had the bike for the MOT which was new. sorry
Dont replace just because its squared off. at 3000 miles its got plenty of life left. Expect something 5k+
As for replacing, if you are happy with the tyre, then stay with it. When you come to replace the front, then change for something different, then you will notice a difference.

if you are happy with it, get another. Simple really.
My personal preference is for Z6's (until I get some decent reviews of the 2CT's). But then, it's just that, a personal preference.
I also wouldn't change your rear, change your front to something new if you want to experiment, then change the back either at the same time or after the front.
That way the risk is minimised about the difference in tread pattern etc.
As a rough guide, I got around 7-8k out of my last Z6 rear. The new one has been on for about a week now. The front might be getting changed at the end of the month, we'll have to see how things go.

If your tyre has squared off after 3000 miles maybe you should think about a more suitable tyre for the kind of riding you do.A Z6 lasts a lot longer than that and is no bad tyre for all kinds of use.It keeps its shape well for higher mileage too.

hovi5 you need to go around corners more and use up the edges.
Whoa! you've got a barely legal sport touring tyre at 3k?
I got my D220's changed at 7500miles with 2mm left on the back. Went for Road attacks but it's not cheap as I thought if that's the life span.

what kind of riding do i do?

I don't know but it obviously wears out your tyre very quickly. What I mean is that a harder wearing tyre might be more suitable for you.

if the wear indicators are showing, replace it
what pressure you running? you may want to bump it up a little, low pressure will cause premature wear

I stuck some conti road attacks on last year and fingers crossed should get about 6k out of them about 2 mm to go before i hit the wear markers
Someones been doing burnouts haha :p :smt103 3K wow thats impressive. How long do the standard dunlops on a pointy last if you don't mind me asking?

my 650 tyres have got 6400 miles on and still got loads left.
the 3000 mile quote could be wrong as thats what i have done, & i thought that the tyres were new when i got it (although it looks as if i may be wrong from your veiws...sorry)
but i still need a new back tyre

Thats me!!! I recognise the D220 now
:stupid:
Hovi5, I've just been looking at my odo tonight (trip B is used to record distance since last rear wheel).
The last rear change was done last saturday. I had done a tad short of 8k, and it had squared. That's not why I got rid of it though. I went to do some chain maintenance & saw a line of canvas going around the centre  Best get that changed & sharpish... So I did
EDIT: Even right down to that level of tread (or lack thereof), the Z6 was fine. I'd actually ridden pretty hard on a twisty road to get to the place where I was doing work on the chain. The rear was a little unhappy about bends, but then, I knew it'd squared.
I'm also needing a new rear tyre. I noticed that I'm down to very low tread on the tyre. 2300 miles on a standard tyre:( I assume the Z6 is a good tyre to go for if I'm using the bike to commutr throughout the week then use as a toy on a weekend.
THANX FOR ALL THE ADVICE, i have decided to get another road attack to match the front.

Just fitted an Avon Azarro about a month ago. It's stickier than a sticky thing stuck to a self adhesive label with Araldite.

Must. Read. Previous. Post. First.
Between 3.5 and 4K and my SV tyres were toast. Yes there was 'legal' tread on them but with the profile stuffed the bike was not confidence inspireing on the corners. Not safe IMHO but each to there own. No I don't do burnouts either but just didn't hang about. Different riding styles I guess.
I used Avon Azaros AV45/46 on the SV and loved them compared to the japlop D220s OEMs. Rear tyre BT014 on the gixer was stuffed (profile and tread) in 1.8K, now using Diablos, much better so far.

Moffatt:
I put a pair of Azaros on at 11K.
Advised by the dealer that they would give the best compromise for commuting and some weekend fun.
Now at 20K and they hardly look used!
Bloody good buy I reckon.
Of course it could be cause I ride like my grannys granny.

....And they are bloody good tyres IMHO, OK I only got 4K from mine on the SV but they were a real fun 4k so I replaced em with the same again. I found they worked really well on the SV in the wet and dry.

That's a really good price. Watch out for them nails!
as my garage is at the back of my house i have to ride down the lane, which is in a bit of a state............. how would i go about sorting this out, it would be nice if it was tar-macked?

Get the Azarros, you know it makes sense

Beenz knows about tyres. I took his advice on the azarros and **** me they are good, feel so steady in corners, no movement at all.
Love em.:thumright:
Azarros or Z6:smt017

What sort of milage do the Azaros push? If it's at least close to the Z6's then I'll consider it. My rear has plenty of the grippy black stuff at the moment, but the front is getting a little low.
I get about 7.5k to the rear Z6, more on the front. Usually the profile is beggered before tread depth.

Not 100% sure,
I have done 2k since the change and they are still looking brand new. I would say 5k-6k max the way i ride:smt093.
But then i push it alot

Me too, when it's safe to.
The figures for Z6's were my last pair, which were winter time commuters, lots of straight line motorway stuff.
Summer time I play in the twisties a lot more, and I don't mind about tyres sliding through corners, so long as the feedback is good enough.
Even riding on hail stones/ice/snow I felt pretty comfortable on the Z6's.

TBH i dont think there is a right and wrong tyre, its down to personal preference. If you are happy with Z6 stay with em
Ah, but there it is ya see. Maybe there is something better out there for me, and I haven't tried it yet. If I don't have these discussions I'll never know will I?
Milage is a trade off with grip. Z6's are good for the winter milage, but maybe something else might be good for the summer time.
Always willing to experiment, and I can come back to the Z6's later if I want :)
got me a road attack £82 & very nice it is too the tread looks very prity & is as deep as a deep thing

I got Azaro AV45(f) and AV46(r) on mine Baph, so you can check em out if we ever manage to hook up. These are now superseeded by ST-Storms (AV55/AV56 would you believe?) and appear to be even better than the Azaros from what I hear.
FWIW I rate the Azaros higher than stock Metz Z4s, stock Dunlop 204 (I think on my VFR) and Bridgestone BT020 (on the VFR).

When I had my SV I found the Azaros worked very well for me and my riding style, the rear went off and required changing in less than 4K but it was better than the OEM 220 Dunlops.
Great tyre for the SV IMHO, if the STorm ST is better then that would be what I'd go for.

Exactly my thoughts :D
I have BT020's currently and am very happy with them. I read all the opinions on here and always wonder what if the Z6 is better, what if the road attack is better, what if........ There's only one way to find out so I wil probably try Z6's next, or should I try........... aaaarrrrrgggghhhh!
I'll read al these posts again in about 3000 miles time!
