I'm going to be the voice of doom here, James - dude have you seriously thought about this, I mean I know its a nice bike and everything, but selling your flat to buy a bike :smt017

You can pick up tidy low mileage 999's for reasonable money if a big twin is what you are after.

OK doom over with :D I wish you well with it, make sure you check that all the factory recalls have been done on it before take it away, Liz has been reading about a few people with teething niggles on that mdoel on the Ducati forum shes a memeber off.

Do a bit of research and make sure its sorted properly before you ride it away. www.ducatisti.co.uk (http://www.ducatisti.co.uk)

it's ok i have made a tidy profit on the flat, bought it fairly cheap then did it up & have now put it up for sale. & because it's in the greenwich area with the 2012 games coming & the new DLR link I have been able to sell it at an considerable bit more then i bought it 5 years ago:D :D :D.

I am going to re invest the original sum i spent on the flat to do the same again somewhere else. & in the meantime will have fun spending most the profit;) Not all of it tho, I am setting up a trust fund for my 9yr old brother:)

Silly choice, selling a flat for a bike. You'll regret it in 5 years.

Out of interest, how did you manage to afford a flat in Greenwich when you were 18? The average price there was £201,000 even back in 2002, or are your parents well off?

Cheers.

The flat was bought for me as a joint venture between my parents Using the main part of my dad's share's he was given when her retired from work with P&O contracts.

As i have said already I have reinvested to oringial amount into another property so i still have another property, for my brother when he is older. I have only taken the profit out, & split it up between my, my brother & my mother.

Whilst we're at it, my house is £160k, and I'm 24. How could I afford it? Mortgage. Plain & simple.

Now please mpaton, go back & read the rest of the thread & try to make a meaningful contribution. The "selling a flat for a bike" subject has already been covered in this thread.

You'll regret it when you're in negative equity. We're just at the turning point into a recession, lower house prices and sky high interest rates.

Some (reasonable) advice for speculating on property:

1. In the early years, live in the cheapest place you can possibly get away with.
2. When the business cycle rears its head, and recession hits, you can cope comfortably.
3. At the bottoming out point (when prices start turning the corner), buy another property.
4. Prices rise, cash in - great property, no mortgage. Thanks for coming.

It happened in the 60s, it happened in the 70s, it happened in '89 (I remember it well) - it's got to happen again.

People are taking out 40 year mortgages and rack up credit card debt to pay deposits, because they want to keep up with the Jones. We live in a credit nation, and it's about to collapse.

Urban myth Baph, Liz 749 has a longer service interval than her SV does. The 1098 has a longer service interval again ( 6000 miles I think ) Ducati dealer labour rates are about the same as Suzuki ones are, the only really expensive thing is the cambelt change and even that not stupid money really.

Its the 916 range of bikes that gave Ducati their expensive and reliability problems reputation, the newer 999 range of bikes and hopefully the 1098 are a lot lot better.

Perhaps you are indeed correct, however you don't buy a ducati to save money and if you're are going to spend a small fortune on one you buy either of these,

not true. A friend of mine has an 18-month old 999s and it's either been at Ducati being fixed or been waiting for Ducati to pick it up to fix it. Might have been a 'friday afternoon' one, but he does try and ride it every day, so he doesn't fit the 'treat it like exotica = problems' equation either. Poor $od.

Rictus, which model is that 3rd picture. I saw one a Poole Quay a while back. Bl**dy unique looking bike

Ducati MH900E the comcept bike had ceramic inserts in the exhaust with indicators in them and a rear view camera instead of mirrors, didn't make production though, it's a stunner isn't it.

Cheers Mark.

Remember seeing it there, the sound that thing made when it was fired up was awesome, the exhaust almost knocked a child to the ground I remember.

Poor $od.

Sounds like a friday afternoon one, just dont tell Liz eyh :D

I wouldn't dare! Besides, she's got a proper one, not a silly one.

Ha ha! Be the first person to send in photos of it to Streetfighter along with the letter, "So, any other readers 'fightered a 1098 yet? I didn't crash it, I just prefer the Streetfighter look. The front wheel doesn't half like pointing at clouds with the fairing ripped off."

There was a crashed one on Ebay, lots of damage but the engine, frame and swingarm were supposed to be straight... I honestly gave it a long look, when it was sitting at a few grand. Unfortunately it ended up selling for £9000 :smt095 Which is, lets not muck about, utterly insane, considering the Ohlins forks, both wheels, the bodywork, yokes and exhaust were all destroyed... Lucky escape for me I reckon :)

We live in a credit nation, and it's about to collapse.
........He is right though! :smt022

Have you got it yet James?

If not there may be a delay cos the Yanks keep crashing there's. Also note how much they pay compared to the price tag over here, surely must cost more to ship one over there yet it still works out cheaper.

Re shipping costs.

Not really :)

Think of it like train journeys for passengers. The trains are running regardless of if you get on it or not. Buy a ticket in advance, and save money.

Same for ships, they sail pretty much regardless. Logistics companies just book space on the ship for a fixed cost, doesn't matter what they're shipping, they just need to book space. Then they "sell" that space on to someone like Ducati.

If Ducati buy space in bulk, they get a reduced rate. So it can work out quite easily that a bike going to the US actually cost less than one sent to the UK for shipping, especially if they ship more to US than UK.
