View Full Version : Budget 2007
income tax down from 22p to 20p in the £
thats nice.
But the national insurance limit has moved up to the upper tax limit. And the starting rate income tax band has been removed. I think overall almost everybody is slightly worse off.

It says;
In 2007-08 only, freezing the rates for motorbikes in the lower band with higher bands increasing by £1-£2
Are SV's in the higher band?
Bluesteel

Yup.
Well my extra £56 a year from the reduction in my Income Tax should cover the £2 increase nicely then!

Pah, you should get yourself a nice economical bike in the lower band .... like my gixxer :smt041

Well Rigor, being the bright light you are, you should know that old style tax bands are not down to economy, but cubic kerrrr-pacity. We can't help it if Suzuki were feeling generous...

Think Rigor's comment was meant tongue in cheek. Seems ludicrous that the SV should be in a higher tax bracket than the Gixxer (or my CBR):D

I'm not that bothered. They have to put a boundary somewhere, and 600cc seems logical no?

It does indeed. I was going to see if I could find out how much C02/Km the Gixxer / SV / CBR makes, to see what bands we should be taxed in, but got bored :D

That's the way I read it too. Another smoke and mirrors budget.

It is now 64 pounds for the SV (upper band). See

Don't remember what it was, probably 60.
my wee cars road tax was only £40 last year, fantastic considering it has a 1.1 ltr engine

They could perhaps be less if theres no windows like a landy. I cant see many people wanting to take Crispin to school in an X5 with no windows.
All that lot can afford it anyway, just ups the status.

Another way of looking at it - Basic rate of income tax up from 10% to 20%:(

i have always said that the split should be at 700cc. Then things like the Transalp, SV, Bandit, etc etc will be in the class it deserves.

Another way of looking at it - Basic rate of income tax up from 10% to 20%:( If I was on a low income (like my pensioner mother) I would view it that way. For lots of folks working part time this is an increase in income tax.
As a relatively high earner, the 2p cut in 'standard' tax saves me £320 but I lose £110 in NI increase. Overall I'm £210 a year better off in my pay packet. So I'm better off but the low paid are worse off? That can't be right and is shocking from a Labour chancellor!
Never have voted Labour, but this lot don't seem to have gripped the Socialist principles.....

There is certainly nothing (traditionally) Tory about the weighty tax burden we currently endure.

I always vote, but I understand why some people don't.At the last election I broke the habit of a lifetime and voted for a party other than Labour.I didn't vote Tory(never sunk that low:mad: )but could no longer support the party that had taken us into a disastrous and illegal war.I also think that power corrupts, and no one should be allowed to rule for more than two terms so time for a change?

Don't vote then don't complain (and some would say don't voice an opinion). IMHO voting should be mandatory.
And vote on the policies of the day, not because 'I always vote Labour' etc.

But not voting Tory isn't going to get rid of Labour is it?
Also, the concept of the Iraq war being illegal is hilarious. I don't understand why people keep saying it.

Totally agree, well said, I did exactly the same my self, voted for the lib dems cos the other werent worth wasting a vote. Trouble is everyone complains about em, but someone must have voted them in.......

Surely voting for the Liberal Democrats, who have no hope of getting into power, is a wasted vote?
And they would be a worse proposition than this lot do you think ? ;)

Yes. More arrogant even than Labour, even more likely to tax us back to the stone age.

That's precisely the reason you SHOULD vote. Apathy just makes them worse. The only way to make them better is to keep kicking the current government out of power until they realise we won't tollerate their bull.
Just vote for the opposition, easy.
Although that said, alot of the things this government did, the mob wanted anyway. We probably deserve the tyrants we currently have in power.

Precisley why you should vote, theres no such thing as a wasted vote because its a persons chance to make his political clout heard, a vote is more powerful than a bullet and if you dont vote then dont complain.

a) I ain't complaining, they are a power to themselves, we are just pawns in their game
b) my not voting is my way of standing for the fact that I don't believe in any of them. By choosing the better of two evils, does not make them right. I will vote when a party stands for what I believe, until then, I will not waste my vote on the nearest... that to me is like marrying someone, who you wouldn't necessarily chose, but they will do ..... better then nothing
c) to vote on a party because they are near enough is precisely a wasted vote

This lot was let in by the non-voters. they won with the smallest share of the vote ever recorded. The non-voters had the largest share of the vote. 'The vote' being all those eligible to vote.
For the record the reason I don't vote is not one of apathy...
... and I also hold the act of voting very highly...
... so highly I will not waste it on the best of the worst, but will use it as and when I feel it has been earned.
We, as individuals, have no innate rights - they simply ones that society has deemed appropriate to grant us for a time. I feel I do not have the right to vote, but the chance to choose to vote. Being forced to is as bad and notbeing allowed in the first place.
Beware what thee do in the name of good - lest is mirrors that which others do in the name of evil.
I agree it's naive of me to think that if more people would adopt this stance then the politicians/political parties would have to buck their ideas up to really reflect public sentiment...
... but one can but hope. Someone has to.
To all of you that don't vote because the parties don't do it for you, why do you not spoil the ballot paper. Far better it you do that than do nothing at all. At least with a spoiled vote there is a representation of dissatisfaction, as opposed to whining on a motorcycle forum.
How can you expect change when you do sweet FA about making it happen. The fact that you didn't vote just means that you couldn't be bothered and not that you don't believe in the policies being but forward.
Voting with your feet may mean you have to enter a Polling station!

Point a) No, we're not! Right now the majority of people are safety concious, responsibility dodging, arrogant idiots, who feel that their point of view should be forced on others... and this is reflected in the government that's been elected.
We have the power to get rid of them when we want - we choose not to. We're not pawns at all.
Point b) You may think that a government being voted in with such a poor turn out damages their legitimacy (and I'd actually agree with you) but this is not how the government will see it. If people aren't voting against them, they must be doing a good job, right?!
Also, remember, you get to change who you vote for every 5 years, so it's not really like saying 'I do ;)'.
Point c) You'll never have a government that does everything you want, so you have to vote for the one that will suit your interests the closest, so it's not a wasted vote!

Um... I don't recall doing any whining personally.
As far as I was aware, even spoiled papers don't actually carry any significance, but i remember something from a long time ago about a 'minimum population %' being relevant in an election...
... hence my stance.
If it is truely the other way round then yes - I will make the effort to attend a polling station.
I do believe in my principle so please don't tar me with the brush of simply not being bothered.
Do they actually have a box to tick for 'None of the Above'?

To spoil the paper just mark it all the way through with a large X.
Spoiled ballot papers represent that people have "bothered" to turn up and show their discontentment with the current parties.
If I have offended anyone I apologize, however I maintain that it is far better to do something than nothing at all.
You know spoling a ballot paper is very like making love to a beautiful woman...missed a trick there swiss !

Yeah, but does the spoiled paper (or the overall quantity thereof) actually mean anything in electoral terms?
As I said, as far as I'm aware the percentage of attending and non-attending voters can potentially have an impact in real electoral terms if it was to fall low enough. Hence by not attending rather than spoiling a paper I am actively supporting my principle.
If there was a way of registering my views on a ballot paper that would potentially have an impact in electoral terms - then I would assuredly do it. I just don't think that paper spoiling achieves this within the current rules that validate an election.
I agree that it is often far better to do something than nothing - except when the mechanics of the issue would mean that acting actually defeats your objective.
If you have to think through the consequences and impact of doing nothing, at least you have still done something... thinking.
As for a-fense - meh - I'll take when I learn to spell it. ;)

I prefer gates, you can get out through them ;)
