Stolen from The Register

A Blackpool family has created a "fitting memorial" to deceased dad Mick Egan - by converting him into a synthetic diamond, the BBC reports.
Egan died last year of a brain haemorrhage and his wife Susan decided on a novel way of preserving his memory. A US company extracted carbon from Egan's ashes, heated it to create graphite and then compressed the result to create a rough diamond which was then cut to the family's specifications.

Susan Egan was evidently delighted with the result, enthusing: "We had to have a blue one because my husband's eyes are blue. I never visualised that it would be so beautiful until it arrived. He is my diamond geezer now.
"It was the right thing to do and it just brings me so much comfort that I've got it now to last forever. He loved being the centre of attention. He could light a room up when he walked in it. In some respects the diamond lights up, which is a memory of how he was."
The memorial arrived the day before daughter Celeste's wedding, allowing dad to accompany her down the aisle. She said: "It was emotional but it was nice emotion because I was pleased that it had happened and that I could have something of my Dad to take down the aisle with me. It seemed like the right thing to do for us as a family and for my Dad - we think he would have loved the idea."

Is it just me or is this a bit "eeewwww".

Does bring up the subject of human existance tho.

They seem to think of the rock as being Dad.

Is it or is it just his carbon waste?

Discuss :)

If it makes those left behind happy, than its a fantastic idea. Simple as that I say. :)

For sake of the poll, it is a focus for memories IMO

A refreshing change.

I don't want to offend anyone - but attitudes to death are - well - old-fashioned. We are still hidebound by a Victorian approach when everything else has changed. I read of a new Swedish burial practice to freeze the body so cold that it crumbles and effectively turns to ash instantly without the pollution associated with a crem.

When I go I want no fuss, no tears, black worn only for reasons of style, and everyone to get drunk.

And if Anne remembers me as a diamond, well that simply reflects reality:p

Good point Simon and well presented. Think I will reinstate my assumption. :)

certainly very interesting, what happends when someone stole your dad. do you need to pay Gordon brown inheritance tax for having him in the family? i bet you will if this catches on. how do you insure your dad? and how do they replace your dad in the event of loss? what if your pet swallowed your dad..

Like sombody else said if it helps them remember then wheres the harm in that.
Thinking of the rock still be Dad is strange to me.

But then again I've never really been one for talking to gravestones either.
I can understand why people do it, its just not for me.

My Dad's ashes are intered at the local crem. I never go there, I hate the place. He's not there anyway, he's dead, he doesn't exist any more. Only in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him.

We thought about it for mum but decided against it - She now being scattered the length and breadth of the UK. she did want anything that somebody had to look after.
I personally think its a good idea and if it soothes the people left behind then go for it. who are we to argue.
(mum as a diamond hmmm - who would get her??)
