Hi folks,

Getting the bike ready for summer and was wondering about this. I'm replacing the throttle cables anywayn is it just a case of buying a throttle body and swapping it out? Any particular year of R6 go best for the curvy sv?
Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Its the actual tube you want, to save any confusion, order this part from Yamaha 5SL-26240-00-00 :)

Well, you can't get more specific than that!! Thankyou!
I assume from your knowledge you've done this to your bike, is it really just the tube I need? No other bits and bobs at all?

I know there's a thread somewhere here about this mod but I just can't find it. I've been asking the local Yamaha dealer about this part but he hasn't replied yet. I've just sent another email right now to check on price. I was told the grips are slightly thicker than SV's which suits me fine. You might want to take this into consideration if you've got small hands.

This was the part number I used and it came with a grip fitted the other part number is the matching left hand grip:

5SL-26240-01-00, comes with a grip
4YR-26241-02-00 Grip L/H

Yep the part number I gave is the only part you NEED for the mod on a curvy 8) Then just adjust the cables accordingly ...

You will be adjusting the cables correctly anyway as you are fitting new ones!

If you like you can fit the matching LH grip as mentioned, but to be fair there is nothing wrong with the Yammy one :) I took mine off anyway as I was fitting heated grips

Thanks for the left hand grip number Ned. So are you happy with the mod. Worth doing or what?

Is the bike more prone to jerkyness now? You have better hand to throttle response I guess? Sometimes a full hand twist is not enough to open full throttle on stock, this mod solves this right?

I think this is a small but worthwhile improvement. It won't set your world on fire but it will save your wrist a little.

How much did the R6 throttle and left grip cost? I've asked for a quote from a local dealer but if it'll cost less I'll order from UK. I'm suspecting they sometimes overcharge a bit over here.

Sorry to drag this up again, but I ordered the throttle tube and ended up with something that has the part number 5EB-26240-01

Now, it fits on the bike fine, but when I do a rough test to see how far the cables travel with quarter of a turn, it seems to be exactly the same as the Suzuki one. I've got the carbs out ATM so I can't actually test it properly, but it seems very similar to the suzuki one.

Have I got the wrong part, or is the difference not that noticeable?

Any help appreciated, thanks!

diff isnt massive.

just gets u from fully closed to fully open with less wrist break.

There is an easy way to test if you've got a quicker action throttle tube. Put the ends of the old and new tubes with the ends that hold the cables end to end ( ---| |--- like so!). Now, does the bit where the cable wraps round slightly larger in diameter on the yam tube than the SV one? If so, good.

For me it's just a comfort thing... Means I can save my right wrist for more important repetetive tasks.

Good test, I tried to do it by eye, but the ends are a different shape (i.e. not quite round) so it's hard to tell. I guess what I really need to do is measure it with a piece of string.

Thanks!

Just out of interest, why do people seem to chooes the R6 throttle when the want to change the standard SV throttle? Has anyone very tried using from from a gsxr 600, or a busa?

There might be other options but the R6 one works so well that I think everyone's stopped looking for others :) I think most if not all recent GSXR ones are 1/4 throw just like the SV though.

Erm, just to Clarify, i think you mean Throttle Tube? (the bit you twist on the handlebar)

A Throttle body is part of the fuel injection.

Just for any newbies out there :D

So to clarify. Does this mod make the bike more 'jerky' at lower revs/smaller movements in traffic etc.?

Nah, the open/close moment is the same, and the rest your wrist just compensates for. If you had dodgy throttle control it'd not be a good idea, but most people would be absolutely fine I'm sure, it's not like a proper cammed quick-action.

shouldn't a mod like yourself change the thread titles to suit?

it doesnt make anythin jerky - just u dont need to turn your wrist so far- so aint got that fiddling around to re adjust

I put the old SV throttle tube back on a while back (throttle cables cut, didn't want to bike shop to have a mental breakdown at the possibility of trying to fit new cables to an SV with an R6 tube) and it rode Awful on the way home. Stuck the R6 tube back on at the first opportunity. You get used to the reduced travel very quickly and it's not jerkier than the SV tube - for the money it's one of the best SV mods out there.

Best get my throttle control sorted before I do this mod then. :-dd:-$

How much does it all cost somebody? Is the reason for people doing this mod because the SV throttle is as stiff as ......(we wont go any further with that comment:lol:) I thought it may be due to me having a restrictor on the bike? Anyone got a step by step guide to completing the task aswell?

Cheers

plowsie- do a search- its been covered to death

it doesnt twist any further- just needs less rotation to get the throttle open the same. ( after u adjusted the cables).

it is simple pimple to fit- straight swop

If the throttle is stiff it could be that the cables need some oil, or sometimes the twistgrip can be too far along the bar and rubbing against the bar end weight when you try to twist it. The SV throttle should snap open as fast as you can open it and snap shut the second you take your hand off of it.

I forgot to say, when fitting mine today the throttle was very tight but when I adjusted it at the carb end it freed up nicely.........Just need to get out and try it now.

Same here, the throttle came up very tight after fitting the R6 tube/grips. If you leave it that tight the throttle won't go back automatically and be left fast reving. Very unsafe. I've almost fully loosened the thread at the carb end to get it functioning properly. Now its great. I've noticed that the left hand R6 grip (I've bought the complete set, left hand grip, right hand grip and throttle tube) is thinner than the right throttle side. This bothered me at first but it isn't felt when riding. The R6 grips seem to have better grip than the suzuki items. I went down to the petrol station to top out imidiately after finishing the job and din't bother to wear gloves since its not far off. The grip is much much better. I've also enjoyed the more precise control you now get after the mod. This might not suit everybody but I always like to have little play in my throttle and quick precise control. Quite a notable mod this. Very happy. (I'm a talking like Valentino now :))
