Anyone remember the name of the top-down scrolling shoot-em-up where you could get extra bits added to your ship (such as extra side guns), and then you had a button which you could press when things got sticky and these extra bits would fly off to the side for a limited time ,increasing your spread of fire. When you had a number (5?) of these power-ups and pressed the extra button you would turn into a flaming phoenix like thing.

Added points if there is an emulator that I can play on my PC! :-)

It's been bugging me for few hours now!

Many thanks

(I'm guessing a few of you also wasted a lot of pocket money on this, and I'll have an answer within about 8 minutes :))

Thanks Cuffy. No that was not it.
You scrolled over terrain, you may have been able to drop bombs on things, but you could certainly shoot things on the ground as well.

There were a few games that sounded like that. Two off the top of my head are - Raptor, and 1942

Yeah, it wasn't 1942, but I've just downloaded Raptor - looks good for a blast anyway!

No, it was a top-down one as opposed to a side-scroller. Tho Defender was one of my faourites - I'll try and find a version of that to play - nice one!

Just done a quick google search- cos this sounds a little like Gradius- but that was sidescrolling. Those games were great- I loved Parodius on the SNES and the perennial R-Type.

Salamander?

why is it, these days, that all we really get for arcade games are either Driving games, Beat-em-ups or shooting games like Time Crisis?

What happened to the classic shoot-em-ups or platform games? They were way more fun.

Salamander?

It was more "earth-based" than Salamandar looks like to me - there was terrain below, tho it may have gone to space at a later time - I don't think I was ever good enough to progress that far!

Well, I appreciate the sentiment, but that hasn't given us a whole lot of progress now, has it? :-D
