Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Classification & external resources

ICD-10,
F42

ICD-9,

300.3

Kwak’s-Autosol-Compulsive Disorder (KACD) is a psychiatric (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychiatric/oPsychiatric)disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disorder/oDisorder) most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive, distressing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distress/oDistress), intrusive thoughts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrusive_thoughts/oIntrusive%20thoughts) relating to downpipes and related compulsions (tasks or "rituals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rituals/oRituals)") which attempt to neutralize the obsessions. Thus it is a polishing disorder. It is listed by the World Health Organization as one of the top ten most disabling illnesses in terms of lost income and diminishing metal objects due to over-polishing.

Explanation

The phrase " KACD " has worked its way into the wider English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language/oEnglish%20language)lexicon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexicon/oLexicon), and is often used in an offhand manner to describe someone who is meticulous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meticulous/oMeticulous) or absorbed in a cause (see also "autosol retentive"). Such casual references should not be confused with obsessive-compulsive disorder; see clinomorphism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinomorphism/oClinomorphism). It is also important to distinguish KACD from other types of anxiety (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anxiety/oAnxiety), including the routine tension (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tension/oTension) and stress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_%28medicine%29/oStress%20(medicine)) that appear throughout life. A person who shows signs of infatuation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infatuation/oInfatuation) or fixation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixation/oFixation) with a subject/object, or displays traits such as perfectionism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfectionism_%28psychology%29/oPerfectionism%20(psychology)), does not necessarily have KACD, a specific and well-defined condition.
To be diagnosed with KACD, one must have either obsessions or compulsions with your Suzuki’s downpipe or related shiny items, or obsessions and compulsions, according to the DSM-IV-TR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disord ers/oDiagnostic%20and%20Statistical%20Manual%20of%20Me ntal%20Disorders) diagnostic criteria. The Quick Reference to the diagnostic criteria from DSM-IV-TR (2000) describes KACD:
Treatment
Unfortunately there is no treatment apart from leaving the affected person with as much spare time, buckets of autosol and an endless supply of rags

I've been fighting a war of attrition on my downpipe- though can't seem to shift the really thick black stuff at the top of the pipe- got most of it shiny, but have used glasspaper, green scourer pads, wire wool and nearly a tube of autosol so far, to little effect.

This is an ongoing occasional effort, as I like to ride my bike too...!
