'99 Naked SV650.

Went out for a spin today. At the 2nd stop the SV did not start again and got trailered home :( I was hoping to get some helpfull hints.


It seemed just like I forgot to pull the clutch in i.e all lights on OK, press starter button (stand down and neutral light on) and nothing happens.

I got a bit of wire and shorted the two black and yellow wires that go on the clutch switch. -> Still no go.

Check all fuses under seat -> All ok.

Check Main fuse on starter motor relay -> OK

connector onto the starter motor relay bit of corrosion - so cleaned it up.

Now at this point I phoned for recovery.

Recovery arrived.

Recovery repeated all I did. we put side stand up when in neutral.

Anyway by putting 12v+ on the black and yellow at the clutch switch we got the starter spinning put the bike would not fire! Damn :smt075

Now I will be starting work on it today and have no wiring diagram so will be flying blind.

Any help with the wire routing for the starter circuit gratefully received. I am puzzled as to why the bike did not fire up, it was spinning nicely.

I suspect kill switch, sidestand switch. But and here is the big butt WHY did it work fine till I parked up! I mean a failure in the starter circuit yeah loose wire\connection could happen, but that and ignition circuit at the same time??

Check the wiring loom on the rear sub frame they are prone to chafing!

both the side stand and clutch circuits need to be closed to allow the bike to start so bypass both of these (bridge them), check the internals on the kill switch, follow that, check the main solinoid relay (behind righthand side panel/gren cover), if this doesn't show results the start following this

I have the same issue and actually KNOW it is a wiring short issue on the front loom. You may want to start there.

I am just lazy and can not be arsed to sort it out. Normally a shake of the front loom or several turns of the key sorts it out.

Yeah I know, it will come round and bite me before too long.

Is there any point of commonality that would fail starter and ignition circuit. Cos short of us blowing a fuse while we had our fingers in there I cant see why she would not restart?

Have had some difficulty with getting the starter motor to go live before. Had to clean the clutch switch. I thought that was it.

Oh well good opportunity to take her to bits and give her dome tlc.

I have downloaded manuals and wiring diagrams so should be able to make a start on the diagnosis.

As a starting point am I right assuming that the black\yellow lead onto the starter motor relay (one with green cover) should be 12v+ to trigger the relay and 0v when not. ie ign on and clutch etc press button black and yellow should be hot.

Also is there somewher good in the loom to check that the bike would run if stsrted ie a point on the coils or somewhere?

When I put 12v into one side of the clutch switch the starter motor will start to spin. I do NOT seem to be getting 12v into one side of the clutch switch! I am expecting for this to be suppled by the starter button!

Will the starter spin if the kill switch is in kill mode. I dont think its the kill switch as the rev counter seems to react to the kill switch ie needle moves up and down again when flicked into kill mode.

Ok, you should not need to put any voltage down the clutch switch ... just short the two out to complete the circuit ...

Right, so now lets isolate the problem.

Next thing to do is to use a jump lead on the battery +ve terminal and then on the right of the two terminals on the starter relay. This will turn the bike over. If the ignition is on then the bike will start, if it doesn't then we can look elsewhere ... try this out ...

I have applied 12+v to the yellow black wire on the starter relay. I believe this is the wire that triggers the starter motor relay (under green cover).
This gets the starter motor going. However with ignition on and in neutral the bike shows no signs of wanting to run!

I have 12+v on each side of the kill switch (from flicking the switch this may be a suspect switch, may short circuit this).

Now to the starter button, yep 12+v there on one side and 12+v on the other with finger on the button. If all of these 12 + volts are normal then I think its from the starter button to the starter motor relay??

The only things left appear to be
1.some wire breakage between starter button and relay
2. Faulty Ignition switch??
3. Faulty neutral switch (even though the light is on)????
4. Faulty turn signal/ side stand relay (where the hells that??)
5. All of the above and more

I am really surprised the kill switch is +12v:confused:

Have you checked for a spark at the plug?

Oh and looking at the diagram, and from the figures you have given, my hunch is that it is the Black/White wire (earth) that is the problem ...

Next time I will post all the info in one post and update it. I ignored the earth on the starter motor relay as I could fire the starter motor by putting 12v+ onto the yellow\black.

Apologies if I did not state this . So much info. I could also fire the starter by applying +12v to the clutch switch. This was how I go to it being between the clutch switch and oh I dont know - ignition switch.

In the end it appears (only appears) to be the kill switch being dodgy. However I dont know why this was never noticed when riding and only got picked up from the starter motor issue.

I will be checking the rest of the wiring but she is up and running.
