View Full Version : Rear end jack-up kit, anyone help?
Hi, I've fitted an '05 ZX6R rear shock to my '02 SV650s and also had new fork springs and oil put in.
My problem now is that the rear end feels as if it is riding a bit low which is giving me 'interesting' handling :( . I think part of the problem may be that the preload is set to its absolute minimum, I take it adjuting this will help a little with my saggy rear end?
Also - I think I may need to add shorter dogbones in order to raise the rear a bit, would anyone happen to know where I could get hold of some?
Thanks :D

I just fitted a ZX10 shock and new springs / emulators to my curvy. Has transformed the bike, but set the sag up correctly before messing with shorter dogbones. If to little pre-load at rear, all the suspension travel will be taken up supporting your weight, leaving little to soak up bumps.
Have a search for lots of info about setting sag, but as a rule of thumb, suspension should sag 30mm both ends with you on the bike in kit. (from fully extended)
Thanks for the advice mate, much appreciated  .
I've just ordered an adjustable preload spanner from Demon Tweeks as the SV preload spanner dont seem to fit the ZX6 shock, whats that about eh?! ;)
Another question actually - I had a front tyre puncture recently, bike was handling nicely before this happened. I got the tyre plugged at a garage and ever since front has felt very weird, making handling pretty dodgy, would getting a front puncture actually damage the tyre so much that it would need replacing completely?
Thanks again

There are a few schools of thought on puncture repair. Whilst some people use the tyre until the tread depth is below minimum and replace it, i personally tend to treat repairs with distrust.
When i had my last puncture Mr.AA man repaired it and i continued on my way. I changed the tyre a few hundred miles later though. I kept the repaired tyre as a spare.

Dunno, but it is possible that the balance of the tyre/wheel combo has been upset by having the plug fitted. Did the garage re-balance the wheel after refitting ther tyre?
hmm dunno if they re-balanced actually.
I read a post on here somewhere else where someone suggested the tyre wall can be damaged if you get a front puncture so the tyre should definitely be replaced. As my bike started handling strangely immediately after the puncture was repaired I can only think that there is indeed an issue relating to the repair which is upsetting the balnce of my bike. I think to be honest, with a front tyre costing about £80 I'm just gonna get a new one put one, be stupid not to really wouldnt it? Bike handles like crap now, kinda feels like front tyre is flat. It isnt by the way, Ive checked that already!
P.s. '05 Zx6R shock damping feels superb, it is just riding low, but the preload has been set to its lowest setting and I think this is making it feel odd, especially as I have had the front forks firmed up. Also, anyone know if the spring on this shock is similar length to SV or is it shorter? I'm guessing it's a bit shorter from the fact my bike feels lower at the rear now?
have they put the tyre on the right way round? (Its been done before)
ASM - Thats a temporary repair, and to be honest i wouldnt ride on one of them for long. But a proper tyre off 'plug/Patch' repair is fine

That shock is about right length (again search will confirm) but having pre-load set to lowest will cause the bike to sag too much under your weight and will feel odd. Set the pre-load so the bike sags the correct amount (both front and rear) and then it should feel right.

How much did you have to cut into the battery box to fit the BH1 shock
Dont think its a B1 shock its a C1 shock I believe, its gold and red and from the underseat pipe ninja.
I got a garage to fit it and he said it was fairly easy, just followed the same instructions that are in the FAQ relating to fitting a ZX10R shock as its pretty similar to fit. Looks good now though, I just need to seriously adjust the prelaod cos its on minimum and it sags a LOT when I get on and I only weigh about 11 stone! With me and the missus on (she only 7.5 stone) its like riding a chopper! Preload spanner should be with me tomorrow thankfully . Well worth fitting though, still a great deal better than the stock shock which just used to bounce up and down continuously, not nice!
