First off, great site you have here! I have learned a lot in the past week or so searching through all of your posts.
Please excuse my ignorance and inability to do a proper search......What the heck is a "Pointy" versus a "Curvy"?
At first I thought it was naked versus faired, but now I'm not so sure...
Anyway, hopefully I will be joining your ranks as an owner soon!
Cheers!
Todd
Welcome to the mad house.
Pointy/Curvy reflects the shape of the bike. Curvies, being, erm, curvy, are older models, carbs etc. Pointies, being, erm, pointy, are newer models, and have fuel injection.
The change-over was 2003. After that, you get the K3, K4, K5, K6 & K7. All pointies. Before that, were the one's that later got improved ;)

I think what Baph was trying to say is that the curvy is the prototype for the better looking and faster pointy one.

curvys were the first attempt, they got it right with the pointy,
if you stick around long enough you'll see that the pointy/ curvy debate is quite heated, usually with the superior pointy being preffered to the "bob the builder" style of the curvy,
oh and blue is the fastest colour, Suzuki will even confirm this if you call them.........................

All pointies are blue - mine is just so fast that to the eye it looks red - so yes, blue ones are fastest, but the fastest ones appear red :)

You know, everything he said is a well known fact!

Hi, vtrider... never mind the kids, everybody knows black curvies are best.
If you are a fan of the pointy this means you have a hidden gay yearning (unless of course you happen to be openly gay in which case it's just a yearning) as it all angles and chisel jawed, all butch like. If you are a fan of the curvey your hetrosexuality is intact as it's shapely and curved just like a good woman. If you are gay and like the curvey you simply have good taste.
I think that about covers it.;)
(Of course this works in reverse if you are a woman)

Hey thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
LOL I wondered if I was opening a can of worms here!
Going to check out an 07' this afternoon, pretty much rave reviews on these bikes around every corner so I am stoked!
Oh, a bit about me.... Just shy of 40, returning rider. Originally I was smitten by the triumphs, but I just can't justify the expense at this point, nor do I want to wreck me or the 1050!
So, decided to jump in a bit less forcefully (read: Cheap *******!).
I will be posting more questions etc. as I go.
Um....here's one for you..... I am not sure about the stock seat and would consider the oem gel, but looked at one made by Baglux? Looked real nice as it was a one-piece, but not sure if it is available in the States??
Again, thanks for your welcomes!

SV is a great bike to ride for beginners and those who've had a break from biking. Hell, even seasoned bikers find the SV a laugh! So you're making a great choice.
About teh seat: see how you feel about the comfort first before getting one, I find my SV ( a 1999 "curvy" 650s) quite comfortable
Good luck, happy riding!

They do mail order. Thier factory is about 15 miles down the road from me.
When I was in your position (looking at buying an SV), I heard everyone screaming about how bad the seat was. I too was looking at buying a gel seat.
Then I got the bike, and decided to see how I went. Almost 1000 miles in 48 hours in the saddle, no problem. I'm used to it by now, but I'm the wrong side of 15,000 miles on an 8month old bike :(
It takes time to adjust, but you do adjust. You also get buns of steel, erm, so I'm told

My pointy is so fast that all the red and most of the blue has come off, leaving me with only a blue-silver hue.
It's also so fast it's turned me gay.

Yellow is th best looking, fastest, best handling, most cool of all the SV's.
Also if you are really lucky you may have the privilege of being mistaken for Hovis or myself
My work here is done.

Ahh this old chestnut. Is it an inferiority complex if you have to tell others that you're better than they are? :)
I think we'd all agree that the tangible differences between the two are minor, and whichever version is "the better", it's not by a lot and they're both bloody good for the money. In the end it comes down to which styling you prefer, and how late a model you want/can afford.
Being a butch lesbian trapped inside a man's body, I went for the pointy - I love it to bits apart from the seat - Thought of upgrading it to a piece of 2"x2" timber but went the whole hog and got a Corbin off Ebay. Trying it out this weekend - off to Aberystwyth - last year on stock seat I had to stop twice to get blood flowing again

Curvey or Pointy?
Ferarah Fawcet or Cheryl Ladd?
Jaws or Jaws 2?
George Bush Snr. or George Bush Jnr.?
The Beatles or Wings?
Can you see the pattern?
Curvey is cool, anything  angular is just square man :smt033
But back to the original post.....I am nearing the certain age (later this year) and have not riden a bike for 12 years. I did a bit of investigation and have just bought a 2001 curvy for £1200........:smt054 I love it! It feels safe and predictable and doesn't scare me...well not too much. It's a great bike full stop, let alone a great 1st bike. I cannot compare it to any of its rivals as I've never riden them. But hand on heart you won't be dissapointed (even if you buy a pointy). And I love the idea of being able to modify it cheaply as easily. I read an article in a magazine recently in which the author rated the SV as one of the top 10 bikes of the past decade.
Cheers.
