Hi all,

Firstly, apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

Secondly, as the weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow I thought I'd go for a good ride out. I'm thinking of going up to do the cat and fiddle road (not sure of the number but I've got it in a map at home!) and generally ride round the area a bit. I've never done this before or been to the area and wondered if anyone can give me any pointers on roads not to miss / roads to miss / places to stop for a snack etc.

Anyone else going out that way tomorrow? I'm not sure what time I'll go, probably early afternoon (once I've got the jobs from SWMBO out the way!)

Cheers,
Matt

If you're round that way you need to do Long Hill (Buxton to Whaley Bridge). It's a superb road. What you can do is go up the C+F from the Macclesfield end, turn left into Buxton, left again down Long Hill, then when you get to Whaley Bridge, turn left again for more twisties back towards Macc. Then when you get to the end, go round the roundabout and do it the other way round  Trust me, it's good fun to do that! If you're anywhere near Glossop, head up the Snake pass too  Another good one is round Edale - very bumpy and twisty. Watch out for speed traps (C+F is a 50 limit), push-bikes and hat-wearing people though, it being a bank holiday ;)

Enjoy

I work in Macclesfield & live in Hyde so could do the Cat & Fiddle every day but have never done it by bike - its frequented by d!ckheads trying to outdo each other, cutting corners with no regard for other road users.

If they want to kill themselves thats OK but I don't want to be taken out by them. There's a shrine to a 'victim' every 100 or 200 yards. Statistically it has the highest casualty rate of any road in Britain or thereabouts.

Bloke at work boasts about reaching 140 on it, so watch out for him.

My advice is to steer well clear, but then I'm a sensible mature adult.

there may be an element of truth in that, but a small one at that! theres some stupid riders out there, but a lot of people are just out for a bimble. Visibility is good so no ones likely to stumble across you. As for shrines, i've never seen one and i spend half my time stopping by the side of the road to take photos. As for most dangerous? 50% of accidents on that road are people driving off road rather than a collision (AA figures), so figures can be heavily distorted.

Go up there, take it easy, but above all enjoy it :) riders at the pub at the top are all friendly, and its a good break. Then come back and tell us what a good time you've had :D
