nope, i guess that must have happened another time. we were heading away from dorking towards guildford (bike is facing the wrong way in the photos, think it did a somersault as did we).

yup, we'd just stopped for lunch at newlands corner and were heading towards guildford and an old bloke (in the green astra) just pulled out of the side road. we weren't going fast, 30 at a guess. the bloke came over and said he hadn't seen us, was exactly like the think bike ad on the telly at the moment.

Lots of oldies out this weekend I guess. Where I live they all come out at about 10am when everyone has gone to work and I swear its the most dangerous time.
Bad luck but glad you are ok.

Well that's gone and messed up the long weekend's riding plans somewhat!!!

Bike seemed in a sorry state from what I can remember but, amusingly, my most visible injury is a very purple bruised big toe!

dear god, he looks alarmingly like the old bint that damn near reversed into my car
in the B&Q carpark today, there's a million oblivious old people on the roads on the island, and it's scary

but the more important thing is you're ok, with all the photos and back story it looks like an open and shut case insurance wise:)

made me feel a bit better when i saw that photo. i was busy sitting at the side of the road swearing and being comforted by someone who stopped whilst eviltwin was busily taking photos and sorting stuff out so i only just saw the photo.

Very sorry to hear about your off. That arm looks nasty. I hope that it's nothing serious. The bank holiday seems to have brought all of the idiot drivers out in droves. I was nearly taken out four times by morons on my way home yesterday and that was only a half-hour ride.

Glad you both are relatively OK. That arm doesn't look too hot.

Ouch, that doesnt look good, the bike does look a bit messed up to say the least but the important thing it the gear did its job and both of you are in pretty good nick.

Was pretty shocked when I got the message and if you need any help just let us know. Take it easy guys and get some rest!

06-04-07, 07:01 PM
Oh and if you guys still able to make the boxhill rideout there should be some pillion spaces going spare im sure and spare gear as well.

Damn, only just spotted this. Glad you're both OK. If you need any help at all, Sam and I are both available. As Falc said above, if you need any spare kit for the rideout (if you still want to go) Sam and I have enough stuff to start a shop :P

Eviltwin. That toe is going to be a pain in the a$$ for a while, I've done that one myself. Hopefully it's not broken or anything.

Sarah, sorry to read about your hair!! (If you need some extensions, I'll take a pair of scissors to Sam while she sleeps ;))

Nightmare- really sorry to hear that. I'm also glad you didn't get seriously hurt. I hope the bike isn't written off- just after you'd got your new endcan too.... Grrr...

Incidentally, did I park up next to you last Sunday? I saw a blue pointy with a couple at the car park (I have a yellow curvy).... I was going to ask- especially as you have a Fuel can and it rang a bell from my exhaust thread....

Anyway- I hope you recover quickly and things with the bike get sorted smoothly...

yes, i remember a yellow curvy at newlands corner!

i don't know how much has to be damaged for it to be written off but fairing on both sides, the tank and the tail are scraped/broken as well as mirrors, indies, side stand, levers etc. it must have done a fairly comprehensive tumble (bit like me, i have scrapes on the front and back of my lid)!

How old's the bike ?, it sounds like it's a close call, if there's any frame damage (even a scratch) the insurance will write it off, and that's hoping you've no fork/yoke damage.

Are you getting a loaner ? So what colour SV next time ;) if they do write it off that is.

Just as a matter of interest if both of you are "black & blue" who's runing around after you at the moment then :smt102

the bike's just over 4 months old. no idea what damage there was other than what i could see from the pics, would be surprised if the forks were unscathed though. think we'd prolly get an identical bike to replace stinky if she's a writeoff.

not sure if/what the insurance company are going to supply. pretty much academic at the moment though as nearly all our kit is knackered (i think my boots are ok) and my left shoulder/neck and eviltwin's right hand/wrist aren't keen on doing anything weightbearing or involving movement!

we are looking after eachother (my mum made supper though).

I think if it's under 6 months most companies do a direct replacement, as long as you don't have any dispute over liability, then it shouldn't take long to sort out some alternative transport, with any luck (famous last words).

Bummer it's happened now the nice weathers here, but that's just how it goes at times, Still hope you're not to sore this morning and between you you can manage OK.

Ouch, get well soon. Dont worry to much about stinky bikes can be replaced people can't.

I suspect if he admited he hadnt seen you at the time he pulled out then sorting the insurance out will be relatively straight forward. As for your kit, check your household contents insurance as you might find you can claim for that against it.

I was talking to somebody that doesnt ride last night, like I said to him sometimes doesnt matter what you do, you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hope your bruises and bumps heal quickly.

Your arm looks very interesting! What's causing the lump?

me landing on it i guess, it swelled up really quickly, gave me a bit of a shock when i saw it when i took my jacket off in the ambulance. it is rather colouful now!!!

i dread to think what my arm (and the rest of me)would have looked like if i hadn't been wearing leathers (with armour) and a full face helmet.

I've just seen this thread. This is terrible news. I'm pleased that the two of you are (generally) OK. You should be able to clain anything that got damaged in the crash off the car driver although that might take some time.

Kamakazy and me zipped up to Swindon to get a new brake level yesterday and some twit pulled out of a T jnct (right turn into our path heading same direction) the geezer had the cheek to wave at us to slow down and we were only doing 40mph in a 40 limit!!:smt019 :smt019 :smt019 He took avasive action and nearly piled a car coming the opposite way.

What can you say?

Afternoon all

Well, the aches have nicely taken hold now. Feels like I've done a full work out - or that's my excuse for sitting down with a beer or two already.

Sadly Sarah took advantage of the no bike situation and had us out doing the gardening this afternoon - made all the more annoying by the fact that we get a full 2 wheeled soundtrack from the A29 that passes the village. Thankfully my wrist is just TOO painful to be digging properly so some delicate weeding was about as strenuous as it got!

Hopefully be about on Thursday for the meet - Law can get his revenge and mock me mercilessly for turning up in the Yaris :-({|=

Sarah, I hope you and David are over the worst of the pain and the temporary tatoos are colouring nicely;) .

You know- that's a funny thing. I was close to home the other day and I saw a woman waiting to exit a side road- she let the car in front of me pass and was looking left (away from me) and started pulling out on me.

I saw the potential situation in advance and stuck in 1st with highish revs (doing about 15-20mph) thinking she'd hear me, but no! Only when she started out and I was practically on top of her did she look around and see me, appear shocked shocked and stop. I calmly carried on my business- stupid thig was, the view away from me was clear that there'd be no oncoming traffic-she really should have been looking in my direction in the first place. Doh!

I've finally found this thread. Sorry to hear of your off as all above GWS.
The pictures of the bike looks to me like it's remarkably unscathed apart from landing on it's @rse. But as it's so new, could easily be a write off (which will be a cracking buy for someone ;) )
Sorry if my pm was not appropriate but hadn't realised the state of you then & saw West Sussex & thought of you.
Take care!

no definite news on stinky yet, but we went to see her and she did't look good :(

the back end was wonky and bent/snapped, a fair bit of grab rail was worn away, dent and scraped top of tank, one sheared of crash bung and one scuffed crash bung, no gear/back brake levers left, no side stand, scuffed headlight, scraped top of screen, cracked nose, scratched frame...

prolly more but i can't remember right now.

Yep, she did look in a very bad shape (mostly bent). The 1st thing I noticed was the back subframe was bent to the left. Your exhaust had very minor scuffs on the end bands that I wouldn't have noticed until it was pointed out :(

another update: police have contacted eviltwin and he's got to go to the police station with his licence etc and they've written to him and asked him to give them more details about the accident (i think he already told them everything at the scene though)

question on form to fill out for the police:
"do you think that the offender should be prosecuted?"

er now let me see...

actually that reminds me - we saw the forms submitted by witnesses after etienne's accident last year (some girl drove into the back of him while he was stationary in a traffic queue). One witness said she thought etienne should be prosecuted for his part in the accident as he had filtered past her car earlier - even though on the same piece of paper she stated that he hadn't at any point been speeding/riding recklessly. go figure?!! :smt102

IMO that is the most stupid question ever...

Whilst this may seem a strage question you need to think about it serioulsy,
whislt there actions were unforgivable it was not deliberate but was avoidable...

we are all aware of the extra risk that riding a bike incurrs, such as smidsy's.

try and put the boot on the other foot, if you were missfortunate enough to do the same would you feel that being prosecuted was fair after all it was an accident, not a "deliberate", and as far as i have been made aware the driver was not uninsured, drunk or under any illegal influence to worsen the sittuation.

i agree (to a certain extent). i also wonder if the accident would have happened if the driver wasn't ancient.

This is true,

It might be worth mentioning to the police that whilst at this point you do / dont feel like prosocuting that the driver undergoes a medical eye exam to see if they require glasses and / or if there is any evidence to say that they should wear them whislt driving, and if this was known before the accident? then maybe legal prceedings should be taken to revoke / hinder the drivers license.

What i mean by that is if there is eveidence to say that he has previoulsy been to the optincian and has been prescribed glasses but has refused / bought them but not worn them, bought them but out of date etc etc then maybee prosecution shoudl be looked at.

after all its a legal requirment to have good eyesight to drive if not it must be corrected by lenses or glases...

ps. hope your getting better!

i do know what you mean here, and that's why I think it's a poor question to ask, since most of us don't have a particularly good understanding of exactly what someone could be prosecuted for and in what circumstances.

I think if it were me I'd have trouble answering it in this case - it's possible for example that the car driver did look but not well enough, in which case from his perspective it is a bit tough to be slapped with a 'driving without due care' conviction. Perhaps 100% fault to him on the insurance claim plus being shaken up a bit by the outcome of his actions would suffice

However if you were only looking out for your own interests you would want him to be prosecuted since this makes the insurance case against him clearer

All that said I've no idea how much the police actually take what you put on the form into account anyway!

you have summed up exactly what i/we have been thinking (eviltwin has to fill the form out).

well you guys were at the scene, and know what he said/how he behaved towards you afterwards. If he acted reasonably and accepted blame (in front of witnesses/police) then it might be worth considering leaving the prosecution side of things.

However if you suspect that he's too old & doddery to drive/has poor vision (i.e. no reasonably competent person could possible have missed seeing you given your position/his view from the junction/your speed), AND/OR the blame is less clear then it may be worth requesting prosecution.

well, eviltwin doesn't seem to have any broken bones just torn ligaments (or something like that) so he's got a lovely wrist support thingy to wear

the insurance assessor person isn't visiting stinky until tomorrow so i've got another whole day to wait to find out her fate :(
