.......and I really wish that I hadn't.

I just went to some of the practise for the British Superbikes at Brands. While walking out my little boy wanted to go and sit on a GSXR at the Suzuki stand, which I let him.

The problem is that as they had all 3 there I decided that it would be rude not to sit on them too and was sort of hoping they wouldn't feel right and to be fair the 1000 and the 750 didn't.

My big mistake was trying the 600 for size - it felt perfect and more comfortable for my short legs than my SV - now I really want one more than ever, but the insurance is £1700 fully comp - what can I do?

You can get it cheaper than that? Trying ringing around as well as just quoting online. My ZX-6R was £1500 online with Bennetts but £700 when I rang for a quote.

£1700 is too much though, I thought £1100 for the 10R was way too much.

Surprised you found the 600 the most comfortable. Isn't the 750 identical in its dimensions? Personally I find the litre bike far more comfortable.

they did feel different although to be honest the one I have always wanted is the 600 and it was in the colour I would want too which helped.

I was amazed at just how light it felt and how much lower it was.........

I probably could get it a bit cheaper, but I am already insured and have no NCB yet - that quote was my existing company.

Shame, because I really want one. Saw an 07 reg K7 one the other day brand new Red/White £5395.....

Toypop
07-04-07, 01:31 PM
Yeah I was in the same situation. They wanted £700 to upgrade my SV policy for the remaining 3 or 4 months or if I started a new policy but lost my 8/9 months NCB it would be £700 for the year!

The 10R with 1yr NCB is only £1100!

Don't worry I've already justified it to myself - just the missus to convince and actually even hers eyes lit up when she saw me on the 600........

I even bought her, her own helmet whilst we were there so the convincing might be easier.

Anyone want to make me an offer for my SV?

Good luck with convincing the missus. I took my wifey along with me to look at a black 07 600 and she liked me on it so much she said i could buy one! For some reason i have held back. I like to do a bit of touring and i dont think thats the right bike. Looks the dogs but cant do everything the dog does

U sat on them all?

The K7 GSXR 600 and the 750 are Dimentially Identical the only difference you could have felt was either a different pegs settings (as they have 3 positions) or it was in you head.

You should get a test drive on one, ull love it.

by the way, how old are you and do you have any NCB. Im only 21 and have 4yrs NCB and im only paying £800 fully comp (Prot NCB and can ride any other bike) on a GSXR 750 K7.

Try Suzuki express insurance with out them my bike would still be a pipe dream

Yep, GSXR;s are lovely bikes. I've already got my name down to be the second owner of my dads 750. Compared to my SV though it feels a bit less comfy, but nothing really bad - gsxr's have never been sports tourers but they are the best of a bad bunch IMO.

Take a test ride on the 600 and the 750, see what you prefer and then decide based on finances.

Yeah I tried them all but as I said the 600 is the one I have always wanted and in the colour I want too, so I think it is probably a mind over matter thing.......

The thousand was was too big for me and the 750 didn't feel as comfortable, not sure why. The 600 felt perfect as soon as I sat on it.

Suzuki are doing a special offer of £99 fully comp insurance for anyone buying a new gsxr 600 before end of april. You just have to be over 25 and have a garage. They are also offereing 0% finance i believe. So there's no excuses - just go and get one.

can you rent a garage nearby?
The saving on insurance should more than cover the cost.

(Or it would in my part of the world, but maybe not in yours)

Kate

The garage has to be within a certain distance to your home otherwise insurance companies don't care.

The 600 and 750 are identical in height and size, but the pegs have different options so they maybe on different settings.

I would say the gixer is much easier and fun to ride than the SV for short people. The bike feels lighter and is easier to manoever, plus the weight is lower down on the gixer.

What about insuring it TPF&T?

I let my mate ride my K4 600 when it was just 2 months old. He had one 6 weeks later :smt045

For some people, sportsbikes are very addictive, just one go and your hooked. (And just like any legalised addiction, the government want to put a stop to it)

Go get one mate, you won't look back ....

once you've listened to the GSXR Voices, you will be turned.

If you can stretch to it financially, go for the 750, more power, more torque and its not intimidating to ride and personally I think you'll get more fun out of it and you'll end up keeping it longer.

I went from a SVS to my 750 and having ridden a 750 and a 600 I'm glad I didnt get the 600.

wow if that was the reaction just from sitting on one, DO NOT whatever you do take one for a test ride!! I lasted about a week from test ride to picking mine up...

but anyway you did say you wanted putting off the idea, so I'm gonna have a try...

1) You mentioned getting your missus a lid, well GSX-R600s are crap bikes for taking pillions. I've ridden on the back of quite a few sportsbikes over the years and the older ones were a compromise, but actually not too bad. However most of the models from the last year or two really are not pillion friendly at all, even to those who are used to bikes. Small & uncomfortable seats, high pegs, no grabrail, etc.

2) I have been really shocked about how poor the paint quality is (though I'm not sure it's much better on most other new bikes either). After 10k miles there's quite a bit of wear on the tank, the fairings are riddled with stone chips and the front mudguard looks crap. And it isn't like i regularly ride over newly surfaced roads or anything either.

Bet you still get one though! ;)

suzuki may still subsidise your insurance if you don't meet the criteria for the £99 deal...they will for me.

Out of interest, where did you see that bike/price you mentioned? I have been looking at various dealers pver the last couple of days and £5395 for a brand new K7?! You don't mean £6395 do you... (have seen this price, it is a good one for a K7 from what I've seen).

Cos £5395 and I won't care about the colour! (i want black)

If you call Suzuki you will probably end up at Express insurance. If you look at the Express insurance web site (I forget it, but Google won't :D ) then you will find they have a Suzuki-specific page. Call the number on there and ask about the £99 deal, explain you don't meet the criteria fully, and ask them to check about subsidies!

That includes the full £400 Suzuki subsidy.

Just for info though the guy on the phone told me that the £99 offer only applies to brick built garages and ones that are on your own property, so I couldn't even rent one, which was my next avenue.

So I think I might just keep the SV until I have at least a years NCB (hopefully).

Best price I've got is £6423 with a Datatool System 4, from George Whites in slough. A lot of garages seem close to that or willing to match, e.g. £6450 with a Laserline 862 alarm from Premier Motorcycles in west wickham.

I did find one lower price of £6400 with a Datatool System 4 but it was for a K6. I've got nothing against it but for £23 it'll look better on the log book when it comes time to sell!

P.s. I'm going for all black :D

Haha...

My insurance is £1045, it's about what I paid for my SV last year (I'm in London btw so may be higher than other people's quotes - it's also why I don't have a garage :( ).

Are you asking about where I got the insurance or the bike? Anyways - insurance is from Express insurance, with the Suzuki £400 subsidy, and the bike was from George Whites in slough (btw they have more black 600s in stock in their warehouse, but they need to be delivered hence an extra week. I've got one from their showroom) for £6423 + £64 for R&Gs to be supplied/fitted.

If you're still looking at getting a garage, you could try MCE - they were my previous insurers and said they'd beat the Suzuki quote *IF* I got a garage - could be anywhere within 2 miles or so. However...cost of renting a garage in London far outweighs the insurance gain, I'd even have money left over to go buy a Tracker Monitor (the better tracker, tells you when it's moving) and pay the £205 lifetime subscription on it! I could probably do that about 4 times really, given a garage would surely be £200 + a month...

I have to confess my voices were pretty loud indeed

I'm very tempted to take Suzuki up on this fine offer too. It's my 25th birthday next week and it would make a lovely present from me to er...me!

However, and it's a big however, I started thinking, 'what else could I get for £6k?', as before I saw the Suzuki insurance offer my plan was to get a Daytona 600 / 650 in the near future which you can get for £3-4.5k.

Looking at the web there are soooo many options if you want to spend £6k it's bewildering. Ok, yes I'd end up paying a fair bit more on the insurance dependant on what I went for (quote for me for a Daytona was around £600) but for £6k you can get brand new Ducati Monster S2R's, nearly new Ducati 749's, nearly new Tuono's, RSVR's, GSX-R750's, and on and on. Don't get me wrong, I think that £6k for a GSX-R600 is brilliant too but now I'm just confused! :smt017

I'm going to my local Suzi dealer after work today for him to have a look at my SV and give me a p/x value and if it's reasonable I WILL be tempted to put a deposit on - but would I be better off with something a bit different? Obviously only I can decide but for £6k there are many other very temping options!

Anybody any thoughts on this? (Sorry if it's a bit of a thread hijack!)

I quite fancy that, just a bit scared of binning it though! A mate here has just got some race fairings for his (1 month old) GSX-R600... £200 or so I think he said, which sounds good. He's actually doing it because he's off to Spain for a 3-day trackday (lucky sod!) where his bike gets shipped over, he tracks it for 3 days, and then it gets shipped back!

But, if they're easy to put on, I could do it for normal track days presumably (on the day??).

Hi Muffles mate, did you consider any other bikes or did you definitely know you wanted the gixxer? I guess I'm just thinking about whether the latest 600's are too focussed and I'd be better off with something else. I will have to have test rides as I've only ever ridden 3 SV's (two pointy's one curvy) and a Bandit!

I love the look of the gixxer and am very drawn to it, but I'm looking mainly for an upgrade on handling and fun factors rather than outright top speed. The gixxer could be for me but for £6k there are lots of other options that could fit me just as well / better! Hmmm, decisions decisions. (Nice decision to hve to make mind!)

11-04-07, 02:45 PM
In all honesty i was only looking at the main 4 ss600s. The GSX-R won due to the deal on the insurance (it's pedantic, but I don't really want to pay too much for insurance - I'll pay loads on other bits, but not insurance) plus I do really like the look of it compared to the other 3 (i.e., ZX-6R looks fatty, R6 the exhaust sticks out way too oddly for me, CBR600RR - not bad actually but not a fan of the way they've done the lighting on the back).

So really, quite flimsy reasons :) but I was quite sure that whichever of the 4 I picked it would be a big difference from the SV, and my abilities are not such that I will be able to pick out the details. Plus the size of the GSX-R is very good, it's lower than my SV, and I'm only 5'8"!

carty
11-04-07, 03:05 PM
Sounds like good enough reasons to me mate :D In reality the insurance offer does take about a grand off the price for someone of my age - it really is a brilliant offer to anyone eligible for it. But as the mrs points out (well she would wouldn't she!) I've still got to spend £6k to save £1k - I'm trying to gloss over that one!

Did you test ride any of the other SS600's muffles? As I said I haven't done test rides, mainly due to time constraints and I'm still convincing myself I need a new bike  I am seriously thinking about going for it but I've got to take into account everything, like next year my premium could go up to a grand again which wouldn't be great, it's only £300 on the SV. Also, I've currently got only 4 months to go til 2 yrs ncb but Express insurance would only carry forward the complete year, meaning I would only have 2 yrs ncb when coming to renew next year.

Also, anybody know what the build quality is like on the latest GSX-R's? I also really like the red / white colours of the new GSX-R but I think it would not have such as good resale value as a black one (and it wouldn't go with my kit as well!)

Actually I haven't test ridden any of them! (that'll get a few people talking :D )

Few reasons for that - as mentioned, I don't think I'll see the difference between any of the ss600s with my experience. I also haven't had the time (and I'm not really near any good roads for a test ride either) due to other commitments. The other main factor was that a guy here has taken a very similar path to me - starting on a K5 SVS, and has just moved to a GSX-R600. He did this without a test ride as well, and while it had a bigger chance of not working out for him, it equally reduced the risk for me!

Don't get me wrong, if I'd had the time to go for a test ride I'd have done it, I just haven't.

The only thing I was concerned about was how much more focussed a riding position it would be - but I've checked the bike over thoroughly in the show rooms and as above, my friend here has been invaluable.

So no real help to you I'm afraid :D

You did test ride the GSX-R though didn't you?!

I'm off to the Suzi dealer soon and hopefully I'll arrange a test ride on one (I'm not sure but I'm guessing they'll ask me to come back after my 25th next week!)

I would definitely get a test ride on anything I was going to pay that much for though! It wouldn't be good to find out it kills your back or something five minutes after taking it out the showroom! I'm sure it will be fine but you never know! :D Let us know your thoughts once you've picked it up mate

Cheers,
Matt

Nope, no test ride! I was a bit apprehensive about it until my friend told me how similar it was to the SV, body-position wise. Apparently the bars are a tiny bit lower - but not much, and the seat's a bit harder.

However, those were always things I'd be willing to sacrifice for a sports bike, haha. So in reality a test ride, even if it found those things, would never put me off.

My mate is almost exactly the same size as me, so the lack of time to do a test ride didn't bother me that much. I think you also have to be quite intent on getting that bike to be able to do this though - in your position where you seem a lot more open to other bikes it's probably a better idea to do a test ride, mine it was always going to be a ss600.

Btw I would expect the dealer would be fine with a test ride - you're allowed to buy a GSX-R before you're 25 so the test ride shouldn't be a problem!

Oh, forgot to say - I did check out the position on the bike in the shop. It's just I didn't do a test ride, so other things that people look at - engine, handling, etc - were the things I wouldn't know first-hand. Again though, these are things that coming from an SV are all going to be so different that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the different ss600s.

Its not something you'll regret thats for sure! the 600 is a great bike to have - fun and the handling is something you'll only believe once you've ridden it. I plan to pick up my replacement gixer 600 K6 this weekend!!!

What one are you getting kate? You had silver/black iirc - but that's not available any more, is it?

I'm getting the blue and white K6 600. yeah, I did have the black and silver one but it is pretty rare, only produced for the K6 and not many shipped in either. There was one on ebay that was rather dodgy (not got a proper V5 and selling it for a relative...apparently) and one on autotrader that was £6,949! I'm not going doing the import route either. Tbh, I don't think I want exactly the same colour again, and I really do like the blue and white too. It has a yoshi can on it and only 980 miles :)

Cool, how much is that up for then? You'll blend in with the pre-K6 crowd on a blue and white one ;)

Kate i know for defo that Powersport in Bradford had a Silver and Black K6 on a couple of week ago and was seeling to cheap with it been a K6.

If u real want one again try there, hopefully they might still have it (p.s. Its un-registered jst to let you know)

Kate

Cheers, but I've already put a deposit down on a gixer already. The black and silver unregistered one is likely to be outside my price-range and tbh, I half think it was nicked because it was the rarer colour scheme. I want (and will get) the exact same model as before but I think a change of colour would be good.

Kate, I'm really pleased that a new bike is on the way. Blue and White are the more 'popular' colours and are probably the easiest to sell in the future. I love the black and I really like the red n white but my choice has already been made. The yoshi looks a peach too.

Glad you're getting back on two wheels Kate, I really like the blue wheels on the K6 600 really finishes that colour scheme off properly

Weird, one of your posts disappeared Kate?! Didn't think there was anything untoward on it :D

This Yoshi can on the one you're looking at - it's not the 'official' GP Evolution can available on the Suzuki web site for £1k is it??

That's about the only can I've seen that actually seems to fit with the bike's original stubby exhaust look - all others are either full exhausts hooked on to the pillion footpeg, or stubby ones that jut out too far or look too exposed cos the belly pan bit doesn't cover enough.

Actually, the only other one that might appeal right now is the Yoshi R-55 but I've seen very few pics of it so I might change my mind! That Laser-dual-exhaust-thing is my default choice if I can't find better...

Oh bugga, I edited it and thought I had added to it, I guess I must have deleted it insead! Oh well.

Tbh, I haven't actually seen the bike yet, just pics. The can doesn't seem to match any that are on the Suzuki website. I figured I would hear what its like and if I don't like it swop the standard can back on. The standard can sounds gorgeous which is why I didn't change it on my old gixer.

I'm glad to see that you are getting another GSXR so soon after losing the last one, I can't imagine how gutting it must have felt seeing your pride and joy had dissappeared.

All this GSXR talk isn't helping me what-so-ever.

My SV is going in for it's 11k service tomorrow and I will have to walk past a full line up of the different types and colours of the GSXR to hand my keys in, they are all lined up next to the doorway at EC Bate, which is my local dealer. I'm dreading it especially as I have heard about the good deals that seem to be going about.

Another thing I have noticed is that since sitting on one saturday some really strange annoying things have started bugging me on the SV, really minor things that I never noticed before?

I did promise myself a full year on the SV before I changed, but the voices are calling and I am really struggling to resist - HELP!!!

I like the GSXR, but like the black ones :) the Blue and White look too common as they are everywhere, and have seen a few red ones, i never liked the black and silver (seen loads in the place i got my bike serviced in March), but i guess all our tastes are different. I would love to ride one one day, but i am putting it off otherwise i'll want to get rid of my SV, and i can't afford that at the moment, and its not top of my priorities at the moment either.

Good luck with your new bike Kate. Glad to see you're not letting the thieving scum put you off getting what you want.

Well, I went in to my local Suzi dealer yesterday after work and sat on the beast (the gixxer 600). First thing I noticed was how different it felt to pick up off the side stand -absolutely amazing! It feels like there is nothing to it even though it is not really that much lighter than the SV. It also felt rock solid!

The dealer offered me £1800 for my SV which I was pleasantly surprised with, that was against an OTR price of £6100 for the gixxer (no alarm or other extras). A £300 deposit would mean taking £4000 finance to cover the difference so I went home to discuss that with SWMBO.

Didn't go well. 'We' have now decided that now is not the time to take out (another) loan for a motorbike and thus I will not be getting one Nor any other bike costing more than I could sell my SV for by the sounds of it!

Oh well, back to dreaming for me!

In fairness we are getting married in 2 weeks time :smt057 (which is costing a fortune!) and we need to buy a house later in the year so it probably is wise to leave it for the time being and wait a year or two until I can really afford it. But I do really want a black gixxer after sitting on one!

I have to agree that it was also one of the first things I noticed how light it felt, just moving it from side to side........it also felt a bit lower. So between the lightness and the lower seat height, I felt I had more control whilst stationary than I do on the SV!

That was what I really didn't want..............

Excellent!!!! what model? When do you pick it up?

Gixxers all round then :D

The height of the seat and the way it carries it's weight surprises a few people. Sam, who is having a running competition with Law as to who has the lowest SV, ran my bike for a week (I'm mad, I know) and was very happy with being able to get her feet down (not flat, but enough). Now she wants one too. Doh!

I think I may force law to sit on my bike at the weekend and see if I can turn another to the darkside :D :D

The GSXR is niiiice :D especially my route to work being all back roads over chobham heath. weeeee. I can get both feet on the floor enough to move the bike if needed, and it felt so smooth to ride making me have more confidence in my riding.

It does come with evil voices that bury into your brain saying faster faster :D

As much as i want one, i am happy enough on my SV for now she does the job i need her to do. I'll start looking for what is about next year :D. Will have to go and try some for size :D but it will of course have to be black :D

£6100 is a good price, is that for a K7 or K6?

Best I could find was £6200 for a K6 in the end, and £6300 for a K7, I think. But I always asked for the price with an alarm since I want it there from the start, one of life's little necessities!
