View Full Version : Coast and a Roast ride out - SUNDAY 13TH MAY

22-04-07, 10:58 AM
Right then I'm going to put together a ride for May. Route something like this - Downham Market To Theford Forest A1065 to Fakenham, A148 to Cromer. That's about 80 miles then stop for a pub lunch or chips n' welk's. Then take the A149 coastal road to Hunstanton. Bit of time there then A149 to King's Lynn then A10 home.
Leave Downham about 10.30 - 11.00 Gives people time to arrive.
About 90 minutes riding fairly nice roads 80 miles.
Lunch about 12.30 ish around West or East Runcton.
Poodle along the coast to Hunstanton 40miles of country road 75mins plus stops?
Spend a little time in Sunny Hunny - Fun Fair, Chips, Dounuts and Ice Cream.
Pick up some Sticks of rock for the family.
Then the final leg back to Downham Market a long the A149/A10 30 miles.
I'm guessing about 5 hours and a tank of fuel.
Anyone up for it.
Sorry, tied up for most of May and doing the Wales weekend at the end of the month. Away on holiday in June................but if this goes well and you plan another one for July time........................count us in:D
Sounds like fun - didi you have a particular weekend in mind? Assuming you want to steer clear of the terror that is a Bank Holiday (when it'll probably rain anyway! ;)).

I was thinking of getting peoples input then picking a day - weather permitting of course.
Saturday would be best because the roads are clearer, less Sunday drivers.
But I can still do Sundays.
Word of warning, only been riding since end of March, last rode 12 years a go, so I wiil not be quick. Also I've done most of these roads in a car, but have never strung them all together on a bike in one hit.
Cheers.

Just looked at the dates in May. 5-7 bank holiday. 19-20 BMF, 26-28 Bank Holiday. So I'm thinking 12-13
Sounds good to me... I have nothing specific going on in May so am flexible on dates... :)
Unfortunately my May looks like:
5/6 Italy Italy
12/13 Italy Free
19/20 Stag Do (not mine) BMF (if sober enough)
26/27 Free Free (I think)
But if it ends up on a free one or gets repeated some time I'll be there.

Count me in, that is if non-SVer's are still welcome!
Keep us posted of dates etc.
I cannot do Saturdays as I work in car sales and this is the busiest day of the week for me.
Cheers,

What you mean you've been ignoring my hundreds of pm's?!
I am good skip, just back from hibernation really.
I changed jobs was busy at work and have spent most of the winter months doing my other two wheeled hobby - cycling.
Looking forward to my new toy and getting back out on the motorbike again.
Howz the Kwak?
Oh and does this constitute hijacking a thread?

Sure does so I will make this my last reply off topic! 8-[
Cool - I did wonder where you had got to, we only managed that one meet in Cambridge and then nothing - did we all hate each other that much??! lol
Kwak is going well, it has over 4200 miles on it now, put a Remus can on it so it sounds "proper" oh and I adjusted the headlight so I am not blinding people anymore!
Looking forward to seeing the new steed!

Thanks, for your interest, how does Sunday the 13th of May sound. Looks like that would suit K, Skip, 2MTHS, Simple Simon and myself, plus maybe some others that want to join us.
Yes non SV's are welcome, but would you mind rinding 10 yards behind everyone else:smt064 Just kidding.

i'm definitely interested in this. my missus has just given me a pass for the 13th.
Can i volunteer to be the rear marker - cos i'm a newb and slow, and also know the roads quite well so i can direct any other stragglers.
Btw simon - which car dealer do u work in? Its just i'm coming to the Mazda dealers in Bury tomorow and seem to recall there being a simon there.
Hmm - If it does run on the 13th then I'll hope to be there... You can be the back marker, but I'll be behind you :-) I don't much like riding 'in' amongst people I don't know, in case they do silly things.

Looks like me might have a decent turn out. We'll make firm plans for the 13th of May then. Sorry to anyone that can't make this date, I know it won't suit everyone. If it goes well then perhaps we can arrange another a little later in the year.
I agree with the whole bunching up thing, as I've said, I've not long been riding so I'm not good or fast. I'm a ride out virgin, so plaese be gentle with me:smt075
Cheers, I'm looking forward to it.
Thread now 'Stickied' and re-titled so it doesn't get lost in the crush. ;)

Looks like we shall have about eight so far, nice\\:D/ . I shall post a more detailed route nearer the time and PM all interested my mobile number.
What do you guys fancy doing about eats - Pub Grub or chippys?:smt017 I don't mind either but a pub might be better for a natter.:smt014 I've got friends near cromer so I'll see what they recomend.
Cheers.
Mmmm, Daddy or Chips eh?
I shall have to forego my usual response and go with 'Pub Grub' - as you say, better for a sit down n natter. Hopefully won't get divebombed by seagulls either! ;)

27-04-07, 08:07 PM
I quite like the taste of Seagull pooh on my chips;) . Pub grub in Cromer, chips in Hunstanton and doughnuts and ice cream and rock and candyfloss and a ride on the big dipper :pukel: .
Did we clarify the non SVers thing? :-) If I manage to make it (looking goood at the moment) I've got a mate I'm trying to persuade to come along.

where are we all gonna meet up then?
i know its still ages away - buti'm all excited about it now.
I'm all excited too !
I am away from this Saturday till next. So get back from holiday and jump straight onto a days riding - woot.
A CLEAR summary of instructions of WHEN and WHERE to meet would be good as I don't know what state I'll be in when I get back and won't have been able to follow the thread.
BTW - I think I'm gonna be accompanied by a Blue IL4 - we'll be hanging around near the back I expect out of the way :-)

There is a petrol station that has, I think a cafe on the A10 at Downham Market. There are 2 round-a-bouts on the A10 at Downham and the petrol station in between these.
If you are coming from Northampton you can take the A47 from Peterborough, then pick up the A1101 which turns into the A1122 at Outwell. This will bring you to the back of Downham Market town and a mini round-a-bout,if you follow the bypass and avoid the town centre this will bring you to the first of the two round-a-bouts on the A10. 1st exit towards Kings Lynn, then you will find the petrol station shortly after on the right hand side. Q8 I think it is.
I shall be there about 10.30 with a view to be on our way at 11.00.
I shall PM you my phone number.

Hi guys thanks for your support for this. Looks like there's going to be about 9 of us.
Here's the plan.
There is a petrol station that has, I think a cafe on the A10 at Downham Market. There are 2 round-abouts on the A10 at Downham and the petrol station in between these. I shall get there about 10.30. Don't forget to fill up.
Leave Downham Market @ 11.00 and north up the A10 and pick up the A1122.
At Stradsett take a right unto the A134 until the round-about at Whittington, 2nd exit B1112 (little bumpy in places, not bad) striaght on to Weeting were we pick up the A1065.
Stay on the A1065 across the A47 at Swaffam and on towards Fakenham to join the A148.
Head east on the A148 past Fakenham, through holt then to Cromer.
At Cromer take the A149 west towards Sherringham.
We'll stop for lunch at West Runton about 12.30ish - The Village Inn is supposed to be good, I've booked us a table.
After Lunch take the A149 to Hunstanton. As we get to Sunny Hunny, take a right towards to lighthouse and follow the road to the seafront/town. You'll see a few bikes parked up (I think they've starting changing £1 per bike, robbing monkeys)
Spend as little or as long as we like here before setting off home towards King's Lynn.
The route should be quite good, something for everyone I think, long straights, fast sweepers and some twisty stuff. Chuck in some good company, food, candyfloss and some half decent weather it should be a good day out. About 5 hours with about 2.5-3 riding, depends on what you guys want to do. I've got to whole day but I've only a short ride home. It's about 140 miles.
Word of warning though, I've only been riding a short while and have never been on or planned a ride out before. Not sure about etiquette etc. so if if mess up don't be to hard on a old man.
I'll PM you all my phone number just in case. Looking forward to meeting you all.
Cheers.

You will be fine - if everyone knows the route we are less likely to loose anyone. Just ride your own pace! I'm not a big fan of leading but don't mind leading part of the route. I willput in my sat nav then I can blame that if I go wrong! lol
Parking is £1 onthe front at HUnstanton, last time I was there it was full though and we had to park in the main car park!
Look forward to the ride and meeting some new faces!

Yeah sure Davy, you can never have too many black curvies on a rideout.
All sounds good, weather permitting of course, I should have a pass for the whole day, if not I will at least put in an appearance at some point :)
I s'pose I really ought to go and buy a map of this country's godforsaken roads.

Hey, with my usual navigation technique it'll be 140 miles & 3 hours... and just don't ask me where I've been either! ;)
As for the miles - meh. If the weather's good the more the merrier - but if the weather's bad or I'm having a BLT (Bad Leg Time) then I'll give it a miss.
At least my knee is a tad more predictable than the weather.
Get out of bed and stand upright = a good day.
Get out of bed and fall over = KFC (Knee's Feckin' Collapsed).
Get out of bed and wobble a bit = :smt102

Weather forecast says Rain for the whole of this area, pooh.

Try this link. http://uk.weather.com/outlook/health/allergies/weather/tenday/UKXX1390 this does change quite quickly. A few days ago it was mostly sunny.
I really don't want to ride if the weather is bad. I got caught out last night coming home from work, 30 miles. It was chucking it down, I don't have any wet riding gear and I don't have a fender extender. Started to lose the front cylinder about a mile from home, nearly had me off on a round-about.
Can you all please please give me a call on Sunday morning for a weather update and to let each other know who's coming.
Cheers.

I have a bad feeling about this..................as someone once said.
Sorry to say but there is no way I'll be out unless the weather changes dramatically. The forecast for today was showers with sunny spells. SHOWERS? Try monsoon like downpours :(
I am [-o< for a turn of luck and will give you a buzz on Sunday morning as I have been really looking forward to this and want to put some miles on the new toy.

12-05-07, 02:56 PM
Sorry folks, I am definately chickening out.
The weather from 12:00 onwards looks to be constant rain and I have neither the waterproof gear nor the will to trudge through the weather.
When can we get fixed for the next one?
The weather forecast as per the second link that was posted is now summarised as "Partly cloudy" and on the 1st link (after i'd entered a county) it's showing rain as coming along at 3pm ish.
Now these are only forecasts and they will have changed by tomorrow morning BUT they will also be more accurate tomorrow morning.
For myself I am going to check the forecasts and stick my head out of the window at about 8am tomorrow. Then ring BigBadDad at 8:30 to see what the consensus is there.
IF it looks like it's at least going to start dry and a few peeps have commited to giving it a go then I (+1 possibly) plan to get there for 10:30ish and do as much of the day as possible \ practical.
I've just been in Italy for a week. The forecast was for 2 dry days in the week, rain the rest of the time. Weather was nothing like, we saw some spitting on one day other than that sunshine with occasional cloud.
Fingers crossed!

Well I'm going to risk it, weather is lovely right now 7.00am, but will rain about 2-3ish this afternoon. We may have to cut the day a little short, we'll talk about it. Once I'm out, I'm out. I might pop out a bit earlier, I could even ride out and meet some of you at Wisbech or Ely? Give me a ring ASAP or text me to let me know if your coming, I may not answer straight away, might be riding, but I will be at the Jet petrol station at 10.30 as planned.
Better go clean my bike now.

Its gonna be dry when we set out and if it pees down we can hide in the pub till it stops and then make a dash for home.
Off to have brecci and then dig out my waterproofs.

Yup I am going to risk it too - its clear here in Wymondham, although waterproofs will be coming pillion!!
I'm in. Setting out at 9.

Was good to meet everyone, pity the weather wasnt great, but at least it was dry for the first bit!
Sorry I chipped off early, but realised I had less than an hour to get back! Just after I left you it poured with rain all the way home and I got soaked! Couldnt be bothered to stop and put the wet weather gear on so 50 minutes of riding in the rain left my leathers rather water logged!

I had been warned by Paws about the tendancy of SV650s to turn into S325s in the rain and I have now personally experianced it. It's not an experiance I'd recommend. Still at least I knew what it was and was able to fix it courtesy of the bikes tool kit, some bog roll and some scraped knuckles.

I use Nikwax Liquid for a quick and easy 'top-up' so to speak. Though to be honest I was caught out in about 45 minutes of downpour on the previous Thursday, pootling back from seeing my brother's newly spawned offering; only got wet where the fabric stretchy bits are on the inner arms and legs...
... and at that point they hadn't been even cleaned for almost a year.
So in embarassment I cleaned them with saddlesoap whilst they were still damp, then once they'd dried I got out the tin of solid wax and gave 'em what for.
Luckily most of my friends have throw-covers on their sofas so I won't go around leaving faint little waxy bum-marks on their furnature... those that don't just ban me to sitting on the floor for a week!
