View Full Version : How many?

How many of people on here are actually employed in the trade or profession they trained for? I had to give mine up due to industrial dermatitis,a diesel fitter allergic to oil products has its problems. It just seems that todays youngsters spend a lot of time and effort getting degrees in subjects that they have no intention of continuing with or that will be of no benefit in their working life. Other people seem to have gained degrees but unable to find jobs in their chosen profession

Trained at college for two years and qualified as a Window Dresser (or Display Artist - if one is posh ;) ) worked in this for a year - pay was poo, so went off to work in a pcb drawing office for a few years - got fed up again and went back to college - Secretarial.

Dont do any of those now - I am a Pet Portrait Artist :D (and a Mum, a Granny and a general dogsbody  )

Sort of similar to fizzwheel, but with a twist.

When I was at college, I already landed Lead Software Engineer (I know, "engineer," shush!) in a cushy job. Then I left there, and still at college, got another job as code monkey come network tech.

Left college & work, went to uni. Why? All those around me were paid more, because they had qualifications. So I started a BSc Soft. Eng. course.

4 months later, I'd quit. I should of skipped a year. Spent a while working behind various different bars. Done all sorts of work in IT (from general dogs body to self-employed).

Now working as a code monkey again. Hmm. Big circle then.

I hope to be. I have alot of freinds studying chemistry with me who are looking to go into accounting or some other non-chemistry related job. I often wonder "why didnt you just study that in the first place?".

If I can't get a job in the chemistry industry, then my chemistry training wouldnt be completly lost if I became a firefighter, which is something I wouldnt mind doing

Not if it takes him 18 years to deliver one letter! ;)

didn't really train for anything at school, other than taking subjects like wood/metalwork, draughting (as it was back then) etc as I was always intending to join the Army. But when my REME career was cut very short by the second attack of the dodgy left knee I did go to college for my OND in Graphic Design.

Then spent 10 years attempting to get out of that industry and failing, until I went to work as a Librarian in a school.

I am attempting to get things together to be able to actually go to University to study Equine Management (so, sh*t shovelling ;) ) which will have a certain amount of bearing on my current workload of choice, as I hope to expand into bespoke & historic saddlery and Barding (horse armour)!

So, pretty mainstream and boring then. :p

Trained as an Automotive Engineer, studied for qualifications in the subject, always worked in that field since graduating. Now work for an oil additive company, but the job mainly involves liaison with European/Asian automotive manufacturers so I never left my roots.

Still loving it - lots of interesting challenges and I work with great people.

Didn't train for anything - started life as a Civil Servant - left to go travelling in the States - found work sailing rich men's boats for them - headhunted into working for a charter company - headhunted again into racing a rich man's boat - came back to the UK for a holiday - ended up working as Stage Manager for a production of The King & I - fell back into acting (I'd done am-dram in my teens) started telling people I was an actor (they believed me !!) did some auditions - offered a role in The Rocky Horror Show - spent the next few years in Musical Theatre, before ending up working as a singer on cruise ships - quit in 1999 - worked as freelance sound engineer for a couple of years - now working in Business Continuity within the defence industry.

So, to save you reading all the above - the answer to the original question is - NO !!

I spent 3 years in an apprenticeship to become a mechanic and now after 10 years I'm still in the trade and with the same company. Went through a period a few years back where I considered leaving for a completely different trade, but glad I never now as I'm loving my work again. ;)

I realised that I had a problem with authority in the 5th year at school.

Left school to become an engineer, hated it and my boss, and got into the restaurant trade where I again hated my boss. Got bored after 4 years and did my bike test in May '95 and became a courier in June '95. Have done it since with a few years as a pub manager in between!

Yes. Did B.Ed, to train as a teacher and still doing that. Now Doing my M.Ed - talking of which I really should get off this bloody forum and do some of my dissertation. The org sucks you in and doesn't let you out for hours. You plan to have a wee quick five minute look, and this is what happens.

In a way, yes, I'm still involved in the profession that I subsequently trained in and still enjoy.

Started out by studying for a degree in Zoology Physiology and Psychology, then went travelling to Southern Africa where I enrolled in course in Laboratory Medicine at university when the country wasn't known as Zimbabwe.

Came back to the UK and worked as a Biomedical Scientist at teaching hospitals in Central London, picking up qualifications on the way, as well as a year seconded in Australia, before becoming involved in an NHS project that required us to move to Sheffield

That programme has grown somewhat to become recognised in other countries that use or want to use our services, and needs people to go and speak at meetings in places like Miami and Sao Paulo; oh, if I have to... ;)

As Beaniebike mentioned, I'm also meant to be working on a dissertation and checking on postings in the Org Forum gets addictive and stops you working!
