Anyone ever been done for sneaking around the barriers? I've found a few that don't care, but it would be nice to know if they're all pretty relaxed.

hmmm would be nice to know, I guess technically it's their property and you should buy a ticket but where would it go? You'd be pretty annoyed if someone put their bike in your garden just cos they could ;)

My local hospital has no policy for bikes and I just stick it in a space, I dare them to ticket me as there are no signs whatsoever about bikes and no dedicated parking area.

Most multistories around here have seperate places to park bikes for free....you northerners must just be slow to catch on ;)

I went to that shopping centre in Watford last year (Harlequin) on my bike with the missus. Got in ok. Parked in a "knobody's way type space near a bay". Came back to find a dirty great sticker on the tank. "Your vehicle is parked dangerously and has been reported to the police bla bla bla. It will be removed if found on the premises again"

Er it's a car park FFS!

Phoned em up and abused them a bit. The reply. We don't cater for bikes in here, you'll have to park it outside.

I'll take my wallet elsewhere then!

Dizzy, have a look at the Manchester thread you started in the Pennine Massive section.

We have a multi-story car park here.

I don't use it though, as the regular car park is much closer to work, and probably safer for the bike being in daylight with people walking past it.

HTH ;)

I used to park in an NCP car park when I worked in Kensington. It was under the Sheraton Park Tower Hotel, and was dead posh. Ever been in a car park with red carpet in the lift  The cost for a bike was supposed to be £3 per day, or you could get a season ticket.
Sounds very steep, but you should see the state of the bike bays around central london - in summer they mostly look like someone has dumped a skip load of beaten up old scooters in them - all leaning against each other as there is not enough space. You really don't want to try parking a bike in central london in teh summer, unless it's very old and beaten up (like the scooters)

Anyway, to cut a long story short, every time I went onto the car park, the sensors in the floor wouldn't detect the bike, and the machine would refuse to give out a ticket - "No ticket without vehicle". So I got into the habit of going around the barrier, wave at the little man in his shed near the exit ramp (he used to wave back - I think the sound of twin unbaffled Scorpions used to wake him up - it certainly used to wake up quite a number of car alarms  ). I used to park next to a Ferrari that seemed to live in the car park on a permanent basis, as did several Rollers, Aston Martins, etc.

Now to get out. The little man explained to me that he couldn't take any money - they didn't trust people like him - so I had to use the help facility on the payment station, explain to some moron that I hadn't lost my ticket, that I had a motorbike, etc, and could I please pay the £3 so I could go home. I used to give them my numberplate, pay up, and then have to squeeze around the barriers to get out, as they wouldn't lift up for me, and I didn't have a ticket . . .

After going through this routine for a few days, I decided to get a season ticket, but they wouldn't sell me one even though according to their details and their website, they do season tickets for motorbikes. Reason why - "You might sneak in with a car one day" :smt005

So at this stage I gave up, and used to park for free for 4 days a week, and only pay on Fridays. :D

Best value car park in the world - I miss that red carpet . . .

The one near me at Gunwharf has enough space to get in round the barrier (by design), a dedicated bike parking bit and a bike only exit that bypasses the barriers completely.

I once paid for parking in Luton town centre but the barrier machine wouldn't accept my ticket so I pressed the help button and was told to ride around the barrier - result :D

Isn't there a large bike park right outside it? There certainly used to be.

At least two of the car parks in Croydon have a separate section with ground anchors that is to the side of the barriers, neat idea me thinks:smt004

Pound to park in the secure parking all day, plus a pound to use the 'helmet' storage box.

I rode into an NCP carpark in Birmingham and the machine wouldn't give me a ticket cos I wasn't heavy enough for the plate sensor. After jumping up and down a bit I gave up and rode around the barrier. On the way out I went to the man in the box at the exit and explained and he said it was just free for bikes and that is why they have short barriers to ride around. So form now on any time I see a short barrier I drive round it. Never had any trouble.

Surely the lesson must be purchase your items of shopping on line and spend the time you would have spent faffing about the shops on a decent ride in the countryside.

Here endth the lesson.

What? You don't like the knee down action on the roundabout on Renters Avenue, and the ability to filter past loads of cars???
