View Full Version : Do I buy a new twin?
I dropped my SV recently and am currently patching it up as and when parts are available. However not having a bike is killing me and I've been offered a Ducati 900 monster at a great price. It's 15,000 miles and on a P plate. It's immaculate and I know the owners brother very well and know the owner reasonably well. It's got plenty of trick parts on without being over the top and really looks the mutts nuts.
So I guess what I'm asking is do I go for it?

If the price is right? Why not.

The force is weak in this one, I feel he will not cross to the dark side of the IL4....

According to Parkers, there's no such thing as a P plate Monster 900 so I'd run a mile.
Or offer him £1500 depending...
Nah, bad idea. If you give me the guys name and number and I'll let him know your not interested... :-dd

Lovely looking bike, in an industrial sort of way!
Can't help thinking that 78bhp from a 900 is not too clever though.
.............would love an S4 though! :smt054

With 15'000 miles on the clock it's either a reliable Ducati, or is at the end of it's life and he wants rid............:D
Do all the usual checks and offer low.
or if its a twin you are after buy my raptor 1000 for £2.5k its got 19000 miles
go for the new Aprillia shiver i have just seen in MCN. looks awsome price expected to be less than 6K
I expect the price is probably not that good compared to a Jap IL4 which would also no doubt be a far better ride and much more reliable.
I'd love one of those Sport 1000's though so get a bank loan...

..and also completely different, so your effort to compare them is utterly pointless.

That's nice, but who cares what you want?
Nice ride Heed.
according to MCN it is comfy well built and excelent value for money. Also Aprillia have recently got their act together in reliability and build quality.
by al accounts it will be right up there with the new hornet( which is the same price!). Iknow i would rather havea thumping 750 V-Twin over a 600 IL4.
Definatly one i am going to concider for my next bike.

My sentiments exactly...
...especialy since i was also wondering what sort of jap IL4 you could get for that sort of dosh too

I only mentioned the IL4 because at that age and mileage I would just be worried about buying an Italian V-Twin. So as a budget bike I am not sure it is the right thing to do.
Well anyway I really love the Sport 1000, never been a fan of the Monster which was why I got my old SV650 instead of the rival Ducati. The Monster for me is a bit average where as the Sport 1000 has a specific classic look designed into it and V-Twins have the "proper bike" sound to go with it. The original poster can google the Sport 1000 and will either think "wow that looks nice", "nah not my cup of tea" or "HOW MUCH?!?" and move on!
True what neio79 said though; I would be edging more towards a 750 V-Twin than an IL4 600.

If you like it, you have the money, you know its history and everything is genuine and you can't see the possiblity of any nasty surprises coming your way, then I say go for it.
My mate had a 900 Monster, he had no end of niggling electrical problems with it. So that would be my main worry with that bike.
If the price is right and you can afford it AND you want it, it's an easy answer. OK they 'might' not be the same light bulb reliability of a Japanese or Bavarian machine but some would call that character. It sure looks good.
It might be an idea to factor in the service costs into your decision as it might be due for a major one at that mileage. Some Dukes can be quite expensive to dealer service I hear although I don't know about this one.

I agree totally. The Shiver definitely looks like one to watch.

It's of the age that one could expect electrical problems, the odd oil leak and maybe a ceasure :smt086
Personally, I wouldn't touch it, but it's your dosh.
FS, nice to see you back to your short, sharp self.......

Buy Kitkat's Raptor... TL1000 motor and electronics, Italian chassis, what could be better? Looks mean and sounds like a war :)

thanks mate
I've now kind of got my heart set on a Ducati. I've spoken with the seller who's said he's after £2000 it but I think he'll go for £1900 as he's got 3 other bikes taking up space in his garage. I called up for insurance and as a 26 year old with 1 years no claims it's £155 TPF&T which I was amazed with.
There are no problems with the bike at the moment and it's got 2 almost new tyres. The electrics side of things isn't really a problem for me as I'm an electronics techie anyway. It's being sold with all the original parts too.
Even the wife's up for me getting it:eek:
