View Full Version : Whoops! Had an off...
Coming home from work tonight, 14 hours on duty. Coming round from Thurloe Place onto exhibition road near south ken tube.
Hit a patch of oil just as I was tipping into the corner, slid down the road and watched my pride and joy hit the curb...:smt089
I'm fine, luckily I was taking it easy 'coz I was tired, but the bike isn't...
Snapped the clutch lever (no biggy) snapped the gear lever (no biggy) and completely ruined the crash bung on the left hand side (that's what it's there for) So far, not so bad. Got on to ride it home and realised that the forks are pretty badly twisted.
Gonna have to get it into a garage this weekend to get sorted. Just the kind of expense i don't need right now. Hopefully the insurance will cover most of it, but I've a feeling I'm gonna have to cover the excess, lose my NCB and have to find another way to get to work for 5:30AM on Thursday and Friday.
I think the phrase rhymes with "tucking front".

That's a bummer.... I hope you didn't damage the road when you hit it :D
At least you're fine... So you won't be up the Ace on Friday then ?
.
Bugger :( glad youre ok though

Remember, Keep it rubber side down!:D

There's some scrapes, but nothing in the large crater category. It was a lowside, not a highside... and no, I probably won't be down the Ace, but might make Frith since I'm prob'ly gonna be in the area.

Jamie are the forks bent or just twisted ? it's not that hard to sort them if so, just loosen everything bar the top clap bolts and bouce it a bit and it'll pull back in line.
the gear lever can be drilled and bolted, and if the levers are the same as the curvy's then I've probably got a spare set in the shed, could have you back up and running fairly soon, what time you finished today ?
Could pop over and have a look ?
Cheers Mark.

That'd rule if you could... should be free and home by 5ish, but I'm out in harrow, which is a long old way from you (I think) PM me your number and I'll give you a shout when I'm free. Maybe we can do it by you talking me through?
(Bear in mind it took me a couple of days to fit mini indicators...)
Cheers bro, you're a life saver!
Looks like it's more twisted than bent (bit like it's owner)... so maybe I'll have a go at it tonight.
Any advice or instruction gratefully recieved!

PM sent, we'll see what we can do, might not be pretty, but unless something major has gone, should be able to get you back on the road.
Cheers Mark.
Kerbs - nasty things. Out to get you as much as BMW 4x4's! ;)
Here's hoping it's not too serious on the bike front.
At least you wasnt almosrt run over by a trauck which is what happened to me when i lost it on diesel! Glad you are ok

Glad you're OK
oh poo, glad you are in one piece
Damn, sorry to hear this, at least your OK and metal bits can be fixed. Not much closer to Harrow, but if you need a hand this afternoon/evening, I have a garage and a set of tools (and a coffee machine ;)) in Guildford at your disposal.
Sorry to hear about that, good that you are ok.
I've a couple of spare levers at home, I think they are for the front brake so not much help, but I'll take a look tonight. I've a garage and some ok tools, happy to help (but limited mechanical knowledge). Busy tonight but can help thursday/friday
Pha, now why you go do that. Squid & Rictus keeps saying that crashing is bad and people just dont heed the advice of dont crash. Anyway at least you are ok and the bike is not too badly damaged. And we will see you at soho with a working bike, ok.

Exactly. The above, if i say it myself, is damn good advice too.
Bad luck Jamie, if you require assistance just ask.
Oh Heck,
Sorry about this Jamie, it may well not be worth claiming off insurance, Given the ofers of help you've recieved any advice I give is likley to be 2nd rate;)
Good luck getting it sorted though!

Will hopefully converge on your home location with a Rictus in tow ;)
You know that you will REALLY have to test it out if we get it sorted out - a nice little run to Kent would be good.
Hope to see you later and get your mighty steed fixed :)

See thats what you get for becoming a MAN :)

Not after the power boost he got after installing the chav can, he will be smoking ahead towing you. ;)
Glad you are in one piece Jamie, the bike can always be sorted, the body is always a bit harder.

Aww crap, just read this, glad you're ok though. Now go and kick the crap out of those forks.
So what you're saying is, cos of the expense, you're not buying the coffees on Friday? :)
Glad to hear you're okay Jamie, not nice when you kiss the tarmac, best of luck getting the bike sorted with the minimum amount of wallet hassle. Hope to see you sorted, soon.

Poo, that's bad news bro. But knowing Mark he'll have had you up and running hours ago and you'l have clocked up several hundred miles since I started composing this reply.
I have to say that the thought of you sliding down the road on your ar$e is slightly amusing, but promise a kiss better on Friday.

Dammit, you beat me to it!
Guys, the offers of help and well wishes really do mean the world to me. Felt like a miserable git last night coz I was tired and p1$$ed off, but things look much rosier now.
I'm just waiting for Rictus to give me a bell to say he's close and hopefully with the combination of Superhuman Gorilla like strength and technical wizardry, either my bike will be fixed, or I will have the fastest banana peeling machine the world has ever seen...
Tuff luck Jamie.
I have a rather indestructible Dullsville that you are more than welcome to ride until yours is back on the road should you need to.
Oh and bearing in mind the bike cost me £500 I would not be extremely disappointed if you were to drop this one too.

Sorry about the off and glad you're ok. Hope Mark is doing wonders right now. We did think, though, that the SV was far too big a bike for you when we saw you pulling away from the pub the other week ;-)
Bummer dude, glad to hear you're relatively ok ;)
Did you manage to get her back on the road?

Unfortunately we weren't able to fix this tonight as time didn't allow (although if it had been critical, it could have been done by mullering a bolt),
However, just back in from doing the gear lever and sorted out the tools needed, either Jamie will call me Friday(If he gets home in day light), or come down and pick up the bits to do it himself.
So On the way, until then he's turned into the Bikers friend and is driving about in a van :D
Cheers Mark.

Ah balls Jai, only just seen this. Glad youre ok and the bike is fixable. Give me a shout if i can help out in any way. i wondered why Cazz asked me for your number the other night, now i know! Not been on much in last couple days you see.
my gear chage bit is a drilled bolt so i can vouch for it being a decent bodge to get you back on the road. Forks i know nuthin about so i hope the talented Mr Rictus takes care of that for you.
Give me a shout if you need anything buddy.
Hope you're okay Jamie... sounds like you are - and that the bike is in (several) good hands. Hope to see you tomorrow night! I guess we'll let you off buying the coffees this week.

Surely to god the offer of using the Dullsville had to be a better option that using a VAN.
I don't know if I am now offended  or ashamed.

Erm... Pigbunk in a Dullsville? Jeez man, isn't the SV small enough for him? There's one parked outside at the moment and it looks even smaller than the Burgman I have atm!

This must be some van...
Believe me, any bike would be better than the van!!! It's just that I'm doing a lot of 14hr or more days at the mo, and have about 70k of camera kit in the back. I know I used to be a courier, but bodging a jib, dolly, two cameras, two tripods, two monitors and a lighting kit on with bungees is beyond even my skills...

Sort of looks like a V-Max... :-k without the V or the Max!
Had a brilliant ride home on the radian. Scooter riders were passing me, looking back and shaking their heads. Had some schoolgirls sarcastically wolf whistling me at the lights and had to ride from the pillion seat most of the way...
Seriously tho, I think the bikes 1985 Factory Custom vibe is starting to wear off on me... I find myself looking whistfully at tassles, and leather saddlebags with 'comanche' style silverwork and feathers...
Now where did I put that link to the Leather Waistcoat manufacturers site...
(BTW: Bluesteel, I hope you don't think I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth mate. The bike's great, just FAR too small for me! It'll do till Julia is all better tho!)
Come on... pictures please! Or at least a visit to Soho this Friday!
Working on the piccies as we speak...

That Radian which you're all gleefully laughing at was the indirect reason you lot are all graced with my presence on this site- it was the bike that kicked of my infatuation with all things engined.
However, it is in fact quite a terrible example of a motorbike- it doesn't brake, go round corners or go that well, and it is also alarmingly petit. I actually nearly wee'd myself when I saw Jamie riding off on it.
Oh that poor ickle motorcycle. It was never made to carry giants.
Oh that poor ickle motorcycle. It was never made to carry giants.
I tell you what, for a 21 year old air cooled factory custom (or "Hardly Davidson") it's got a bit of poke. Had it up to 110 today and it was still pulling for more. Took a while to get there, but still, would have taken it faster but the thought of those brakes stopped me (the THOUGHT of the brakes being a better stopping device than the ACTUAL brakes...)
Had it up to 110 today and it was still pulling for more.
Hmm... that's only 5mph less than I've managed to get my bike to do (no luggage, tailwind, downhill on the M40).
Note to self: must get new bike
2nd note to self: I've had that first note for a long, long time
Glad you're having fun though J.
