@Ian, I passed in October and still feel more like a pretender than a "proper motorcyclist" :). Take your time, ride when you feel confident and comfortable and where you feel confident and comfortable. It will take you a while before you think less about operating the bike and more about riding it and the road (if you know what I mean). Bloody good fun learning though.
btw, the SV might be no rocket, but if you have no bike experience at all, and are unaware of the response of a sports bike, you will find the throttle a little intimidating at first :) You'll love it.
