Go sit in the corner.

But first drop by your local music store and get yourself a copy of Bach's Cello Suites played by Rostropovich himself. Don't blame me if you get the shivers and go to heaven and back, though. :notworthy:

Only in my spare time, I'm ashamed to say.

i think Cellos make some fantasticly moving sounds in the right hands.
And every woman that ive ever seen playing a cello seems to have a mildly arrousing effect on me :smt017
lol

Filipe, i like the odd bit classical music, especialy the very atmospheric stuff (guess you might say i like "pop" classical) so before i go running out to find this piece you recommend can you maybe post up a clip for me to see what the fuss is about? If its not too much trouble that is mate. :D

I like to listen to it (mainly on the radio) although I don't know a lot about it.

Just ordered the Rostropovich/Bach Cello Suites off Amazon.

Ooooh, a little culture on the Org - pity it's for such a sad reason.

I prefer Tchaikovsky to Bach, but I too will be having a listen a bit later.

I am ashamed to say I dont really listen to it apart from listening to my brilliant Dad when he plays the piano, but I learned piano and flute (did a few grades) when I was a kid. Picked them back up a few years ago and am still battling .

Have dabbled with a bit of jazz and blues but always fall back on the classical music, its so much easier to just read the music than trying to improvise solos. :D

I can sympathize with you there! even though I'm a grade 7, I'm rubbish at improvising (IMO)! But I refuse to give in... Once I have some money I will on the look out for a new sax teacher who can help me with Jazz  http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t168/fox_band_girl/7.gif If it's a lost cause, I'll stick to sheet music :(

I miss my music :(

Jeez, I'm the complete opposite, I hate reading sheet music, it feels like ties me down... it's great for learning, of course, but... ok, I'm just lazy. And I suck at jazz, maybe because I'm just lazy.

Im impressed! I only got to classical grades 4 piano and 3 flute -practical, so I just plod along playing stuff I can manage (I must practice my scales, I must practice my scale, I must...;) )

You can buy some self teaching Jazz books. Do you have Theory Grades? because I havent much theory, I really struggle to get to grips with intervals, modes, circle of fifths etcs and my scales and Arpegios are pretty rubbish  (if you have all that lot in your head it's much easier because you can pick out the different keys you need to be in for each phrase in a solo :) )

My phrasing is quite good and I have a good ear so I can improvise and solo over stuff I know but as soon as Im given a lead sheet of something I dont actually know -Im stuffed! :smt017 :)

Now thats what I would really like to play and have tried but cant get on with all them sore finger tips :( mind you, you should be alright with a bit of jazz if you play rock and blues - its all based on similar theory :smt023 :D

True, it's all based on the same 12 notes ;) But then there's that slight difference between theory and practice... ;)

The sax is a beautiful instrument, and so easy to play, and at 16 it seemed all too easy to get to grade 7 (I also have grade 3 Organ)... I would love to try the piano, oboe or basoon... But again its money, so until I'm finished with this studying milarky, I can't really progress without some dosh. Oh well if the Jazz milarky fails, classical it is for me! btw this is my baby (http://www.saxophones.co.uk/acatalog/yas82zb.gif), isn't he one hot Yamaha!

You can buy some self teaching Jazz books. Do you have Theory Grades? I've tried the self teaching Jazz books, but with that sort of thing for me, it's more about practice and hearing someone whilst they talk it through for you to get the basics, rather than reading some theory it in a book;) ... No, I don't have any theory grades :( was just getting into all that sorta thing before I packed it in to do my studies... My scales and arpeggios used to be spot on, but not so much now. Some refresher lessons are definitely in order!

That is a beaut! :D

Yeah I have given up on the Jazz for the time being, I just havent got the patience to learn all the theory!! #-o ](*,)

I'd have loved to have learn the Sax at school rather than the Flute - but they didn't have one I could borrow. :(

That said I got to about grade 4 before I left that school and gave it up... I think I've still got my old Flute up in the loft somewhere.

But it was really piano for me. Mum used to play in assembly in the primary school she taught at, so we always had a piano in the house. Me plonking about at age 5 trying to play Puff the Magic Dragon made her send me to lessons for a bit of peace. ;)
Got to grade 8 practical and grade 6 theory by the time I was 14, but then Jools Holland hit the TV on OTT - so of course all I wanted to play then was Jazz - they refused to teach me anything but classical and so I gave up in a fit of pique.

The exams were a struggle though. I was much better at the set peices as I didn't actually read the music - my teacher would play a piece and I'd copy - they she'd do the next bit etc - so I learned them by ear and memory. My sight reading was appalling.
Being dyslexic some of the letters caused me trouble - more so than normal as there was no 'word context' to help me out. So I basically found my starting note and everything from there was kinda 'up 2 notes then down 4, up 3 & 5, down 1 etc'...

... which of course made things really slow. If I miss-counted I was screwed from that point on.

Haven't played since so wouldn't know an arpeggio if it jumped up and bit me in the **** now. :(

Oh well if the Jazz milarky fails, classical it is for me!

Better start learning Mussorgskys "Pictures from an exhibition" then. ;) Unfortunately the classic repertoire for the Sax is quite short (in comparison with other instruments), being a relatively young instrument and that quirk in it's classification (made of brass but sounds like a woodwind)...

I'd love to play baritone, I love that raunchy sound, but money is an issue and I don't know anyone I could steal one from so... back to the geetar for me.

btw this is my baby (http://www.saxophones.co.uk/acatalog/yas82zb.gif), isn't he one hot Yamaha!Great looking indeed, and comes from one of the big four, so it must be good :D but then again, as they said, even bad sax is better then no sax, so... 8-[
