View Full Version : Overnighter rideout to Dornoch Bike Rally this Saturday, the 5th
Anyone interested in this?
Makes for a great rideout on the Bank Holiday weekend and the routes from all directions put a smile in your lid. A82 anyone? Possibly with detour through the stunning Glen Affric area west of Drumnadrochit.
Was at it last year and met up with Jimmy (numbers) for a few beverages. Campsite is in a field beside the pub and beer tent/marquee for the bands (usually decent local rock acts).
Breakfasts laid on next morning in the pub. Dornoch itself is just a mile or so away and a nice place to wander round on Sunday with a fuzzy head before tackling the return trip.
I think it's about £12-15 entry inc. campsite.
Any takers?

I fancy this actually. My riding buddy(?) is very unreliable. We were supposed to be planning a weekend away over Skye direction but as usual...no word and it'll be a last minute decision to go then he'll fanny about all day saturday and it'll be six pm before he gets his erse into gear then will suggest a run to St. Andrews for the 5th time this week.
What's your route plan?
no bike sorry but sounds good

I know that guy! He's my bezza mate too. :p
Gloves on before the helmet type eh?:p The only good thing about setting off at 4pm etc is the cops have got bored and fecked off!
First off, I'm not sure i'm going. I heard today the weather - which has been glorious for 10days solid - is meant to be on the change Sat/Sunday - will look into this and report back as accurately as i can. If we're camping, i dont fancy the usual soggy field senario and three sets of clothes. Lets not think the worst tho!
ROUTE PLAN:
I cant leave Portree 'til about 2.30 or 3:00 on Saturday as the g/f is working a half day.
On our own it's a straightforward route via Kyle, join the A890, head thru Garve, Dingwall, join the A9 and up to Dornoch. TOTAL : 160miles, under 4hrs.
If the plan was to meet some of you guys...
I'd take the South route from Kyle to Invermorriston, then Loch Ness-side A82, join the A9 and it's a doddle from there on. TOTAL : 175miles, 4hrs+
This route could incorporate the Cannich/Glen Affric detour i mentioned - or maybe we could leave that for the return leg when we have more time?
From central belt if you wanted to do the A82 route thru Glencoe I could meet up with interested parties in Drumnadrochit, probably about 5pm. That's about 140ish miles from Glasgow area.
Or, if you're going to come up via the A9 Perth etc. i guess we could meet in Inverness, 5.30 or so....
Dornoch is about 45miles north of Inverness, so give it a good hour or so to the rally from Inverness.
Golspie has Dunrobin Castle for Falconry shows. I'm looking into attending this on Sunday: shows daily @ 11.30am, 1.30pm or 3.30pm.
OK, the latest on the weather via accuweather is.....
As forecast@19:00 today, for Dornoch area: Fairly good Friday, still alright Saturday & Sunday. Ahh! Monday, at which point it's hinting at thunderstorms. Think i'm gonna risk it, what the heck.

That's the spirit!
No can do sweetie - I'm reduced to my honda at the moment and I'm taking Dad to Knockhill for a birthday treat!
Have a good time though and no doubt we'll be up to see you all real soon!

Did you go to the rally, I was down there on saturday for a few hours (only saw this thread 5 mins ago)?
What a glorious day and a lot of bikes, mine was the Yellow gsxr.
Ermmmmm, in a word. NO.
Was blowing an absolute hoolie here on Saturday and the rain was on/off/on etc. so i kept putting it off.
Decided to visit a mate over in Forres instead so took the van and tent. A cop out, i know, i know.
Guess what, 40miles from home, dry roads, sun out and us seriously tempted to turn back and go on two wheels. Never did though....:(
Never trust the weatherman. :smt013

Ahoy! Welcome to the madhouse. :-)
Well done you on doing a search first before starting a new thread, the smart arses are always suggesting people do that. I tell you, you can't win on here...
So so true.
However Yanky, you had me worried for a min. I didnt know i was going to Dornoch anytime soon. Phew!
As for a route, here is a sample of the wild west. So, from Dornoch why not head for northwest to Ledmore Junction, then south into Ullapool. Then either head back via Garve to Inverness area or if you like what you've tasted so far... wind along the coast to Gairloch and Lochcarron, make your way to Spean Bridge then Dalwhinnie.
Ah an old thread resurrection. We've all done that.
Excuse my ignorance but what is the Dornoch Rally?
In short...
The Over The Hill Rally is a weekend bike gathering organised by Buzzards MCC, held between Easter and early May each year. Main place is the Trentham Hotel on the A9, about 20m north of inverness. Think bar, bands, beers, bikes, booze, bbq and banter. Just an excuse for a bike run/pishup/hangover really!
Of course, i have no idea if its on this year, or when.

You've sold that quite well, those are all my favourite b's
except missing "babes"
And if you were at the first GM - BJ's!!!
Sadly the person who shouted that one out when we were discussing the best B's in life doesn't show her face on here very often anymore.
Still one of the funniest moments I've had at a GM!!!
