In answer to your question, go for the SV over the GSXR

So jumping from a RS50 to a Gixxer?? Why those bikes. What are YOUR reasons for and against.
Personaly, having rideen both bikes, the SV would suit. They are cheap as chips secondahnd and plentiful in numbers, Theres also a lot of spares around. A more than capable bike in the right hands. Yes it has its faults, and everyone will come and tell you so. Ive had my SV 7 years now, its still my only bike, its over 50k and still brings a smile to my face. Its fast enough to get you into trouble, but forgiving enough to get you out. Its a great bike.
Gixxers are for girls, and men with small willies! Some people even sell thier Gixxers and buy Hornets, but they are wierd and we'll just ignore them (The hornet is a great bike as well)
Oh, and theres a small matter of insurance. The gixxer is about 4 groups higher than an SV, and thats a lot of money.
If youa re still restricted, then both bikes will be as quick as each other to be honest so its a no brainer. Get an SV :D
HTH :)
Hello, get the Gixxer. ;)
Edit: Viney's post wasn't there when I posted. I am not suggesting you are a girl, etc.

Croeso! :D
Welcome.
Out of the 2 choices you've presented, I'd say the SV.
Now, SV vs GSXR-750.... that's a different question.
Insurance quotes might be fun though :) Buy the bike that's right for you (and your bank manager).

Hi.....Im slightly biased.......get the SV  ;)
Hi hello,,.. As for your choice of next bike go for the SV,, i met a guy out when riding once he had a restricted GSXR600 and it had no guts, i ****ed all over it with my restricted SV, it keeps so much of it's low down power. Move onto the GSXR when you can afford the insurance!!!
Welcome, If I was you, it would have to be an SV, a cracking bike.
Now, SV vs GSXR-1000.... that's a different question.
Have fun!
haha well thanks for the welcome guys (n gals ;)) n hello same :) think i remember seein you once or twice!
anyways ... viney i've seen your bike at downham Gym a couple of time, got a funny sticker on there about your mum being my girlfriend or something ;) haha
as for the bikes side of things...
reasons for gixxer - love the sports shape, the whole look and feel of the bike is just awsome, prefer the seat/body positioning when on the bike. insurance ive had quotes on and bennetts is the way to go for me - yet to try Suzuki Express to see if they can get me anything cheaper (vicer versa on the SV) - mainly the gixxer for me is a great lookin machine, i wont deny it, want it for looks as well as havin it for what it is.
reasons for SV - good begginers bike as everyone keeps telling me not a bad lookin bike but just cant get my head around the fact its NOT a sports bike that i want - tbh there isnt any real reasons why i dont want an SV, i just prefer the Gixxer because of the aggressiveness (if that makes sense?) i mean im riding a 50cc and it looks really aggressive for what it is ... the SV for me isnt an aggressive lookin thing!
its all just mental lol the gixxer is more my type purely coz i prefer the sports bike shape, but then what 18 year old doesnt?

I wanted a GSXR when i started riding... at the time there were the K4's fell in love with a black one i saw... until i sat on it and couldn't touch the floor so got the sv instead as it could be lowered better than the gsxr. I'm loving it (when i actually get round to riding it) It's quick enough when i want and although it doesn't have the looks that a gsxr has it is still a good looking bike :) (but then mine is the best shape and best colour :D)
I think you are right in saying that it is what every 18 year old wants as it is the status symbol that anyone thinking of a biker will think of... but i would wait until i had experience of a bigger bike that is still tame enough not to spit you off. Even though they are completely different and after riding the sv you will have to learn how to ride an in-line-4, the jump isn't as much as going from a 50cc to the gsxr.
If that makes sense
yeah i can understand where your coming from, 50cc to a 600 is a big jump ... but then im mental lol so i dont really mind the jump ya see.

Every one is giving great advice. Everything Viney says is true, those Gixer owners all have small willies.. (mine has now grown back), it's a stonking bike for beginners and experienced riders.
You will save so much money on the sv and with the saved money you can move out from home (like you've been saying you were gonna do for the past year ;) )
And Sam is definately right, the sv will forgive some mistakes where the gixer would throw you off.
I wouldn't say you are mental, I would say you are slightly stupid ;)

And BigB, its "My other rides your girlfriend" From Max power years ago init!

Well the end of the day, you buy what you want. Just remember that if/when you dop it, its not going to be cheap. Jumping from a 50 to a 600, even a SV, is a large jump. Both are going to seem fast. Id go for an SV for a year, then trade up to a Gixxer. It will make you appreciate the gixxer more...or maybe you'll love the SV..many have. Its your choice

And the sv is cheap enough to have for a year and really not lose much money on when you trade too.
Oh and are you sure it was V's bike at the gym? I'm sure he joined and never went ;)

He's right, but I'm comfortable with it :D
Get the SV.. listen Viney, he talks sense. Trust me, you'll get alot more fun out of the GSXR with a year or so experience on the SV, and your insurance will be less when you do get it.
Welcome to the site.

(Fizz has a gsxr750, so has a really small willy ;))
cheaper bike
cheaper insurance
cheaper maintainance
still great fun...
(oh and you get to keep your willy)
sv for a year,then get a gixxer
thats my plan, & a damn good one IMO
have you looked at a SV curvy? older bike but better looking IMO

Hey V, when's the next SelKent meet? If we can meet up and drag BigB down there, then with Squidster and Rictus I'm sure they can give him some good unbias opinions on many bikes. What ya reckon?

Hello and welcome.
You know the right choice is the SV first then move to the GSXR.
The SV forgives the mistakes I make and I think if I had gone GSXR first then it would have thrown me off by now!
What ever you choose, enjoy riding it.
thanks for the advice guys...
what really put me off on the SV was the nakedness of it! i would only really get 1 with the full fairings on...
agh **** it lol im split again :( lol

:( lol
i agree they do look better with lowers. but the curvy looks more sporty IMO & the money you save can be put towards the gixxer fund
prefer the newer pointy shape, the old 1 just looks ... fat lol

We can do, ish, or at least somewhere you could find as a meeting spot.

I was gonna say the same thing. It's definately not suzuki lowers.
I think the suzuki ones definately look the best (from what I have seen), they keep the right lines and angles of the original plastics.
They are still nice though Tiger.
ok so i went to the local suzuki dealers today n saw the SV in the flesh ... very nice bike... still prefer the gixxer lol gona phone up Suzuki Express n see what quotes they can do for me.

Although i admit i have skim read the thread...have you said if you will be on a restricted license or full?
The sensible money indicates an SV would be the right choice, but if you can afford a GSXR and its what you really want then why not get it.(It really is alot more £ though, insurance wise/consumables and you certainly dont want to drop it...which you will :) )
However that advice was for a full license, if you are restricted then it has to be the SV. No point having a restricted GSXR as by all accounts the SV handles it a lot better. By the time your 2 year probabtion is up the GSXR is more affordable and you will be in a better position to handle it.
An SV should be more than enough from a 50cc :)

erm.... sv doesn't handle better at all! I have had both and the gixer handle much much better....... get the sv though mate

what fairing is that?
I have no clue, I just googled SV650 Sport for images. I was looking for a pic of one I saw for sale with a fairing and a GSXR paint job which I thought would do the lad nicely, but I may have dreamed it!

No it was in reply to ASM-Forever.
I think he meant that the engine characteristics of the SV were not effected as much by the 33bhp restriction as the GSXR is.
