I thought i would start ANOTHER thread lol.

Basically with the amount of us lot in here i'm sure we could all benefit from knowing what we do for a living and what bike stuff we do so for guidance and advice.

Me - well let's just say if you want some info on doing your tax return and tax codes / rebates give me a shout - yes that's right i'm a dreaded TAXMAN. ha ha.

Bikes - apart from the usual stuff, oil etc.. i got myself an abba bike stand and took the wheels off and bought new tyres online and refitted em myself last year using the haynes manual - so i have the right tools for a K3 650s to do this if anyone wants a loan of em. (eg. pop through in the car - get the job done)

Want to do - brakes (new pads) and i have some goodridge lines to put on this summer so any tips and even help would be appreciated.

I thought it may help each other with a few headaches and get some free advice and also have a pool of knowledge and tools.

Me, I'm full time Mechanical Engineering student & part time Paintball Marshal. a young-ling at the grand old age of 20

As for bikes, I can do oil, filters, sparks, brake pads, chains, exhaust cans, brake calliper strip/clean/rebuild, carb strip/clean/rebuild (not tried an sv one though) and also fit little frilley things like lowers etc. Not changed brake lines, but I dont see how it can be a problem as long as they are blead propperly.

Waiting to get my p60 through, but may actually need some advice if it doesn't come. (I suspect it isn't going to, and I'm due a tax rebate from a previous job)

I've got an Abba stand and a kettle. I can do nothing, but you're welcome to use the stand and drink tea.

Work wise, if you are at A but would prefer to be at B, I can take you there. (I can also bring you back to A later if you like.)

i ride a raptor 1000, well i will do shortly when its back in scotland.

I work as a class room assistant and have 29 working days until my 6 weeks summer holidays.

You know, that abba stand/kettle thing sounded familiar to me and, search being my friend, I found this (http://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php?p=1140186&postcount=5) and this

Why not start a Sticky thread with names of all bikers who can easily perform a certain task and their location?
Do we need our absentee mod to make a sticky? It would save me from having to repeat my whiney joke...

So of no use to anyone. Muzikill I have a quick question re returns and relates to my lad.

He has to provide his own van for work as a tiler. He is currently recording his milage for all jobs. His employer provides him with a fuel card that covers his fuel costs but not the cost of owning/operating the vehicle.

Can he claim anything. He has been sent a mini return. But does not seem to cover his travel costs

Oh yeah i forgot in a previous life i was an electrician! house / industrial and have been known to be able to fix electrical appliances eg. showers and washing machines etc..

"i can put you in jail" - you an oink or a lawyer? lol

van expenses - try www.hmrc.gov.uk/mileage (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/mileage) - p87 claims for mileage, for motoring expenses he can put it in the expenses box, failing that put in a claim for van expenses in writing but be realistic, business use expenses only if he also uses the van for personal use, he can claim any expense by deciding on a percentage for business use and apply it to all his running costs and make a claim on it - they may decide he needs to do a full tax return every year though.
If he wants to know where to send a claim into get him to ask for his employers p.a.y.e ref number and using the first 3 digits put it into this search engine to find his tax office address and telephone number to call for help.

muzikill
18-05-07, 05:21 PM
Stuarty, deffo need the suspension done mate! and the front forks need adjusted!

on the list...

coolant renewed

Oil and filter change.

Brakes cleaned and new pads & new brake lines

Clutch cable adjustment/replacement (think its stretched but going to attempt to adjust it at the sprocket if needed)

i'm going to have a go doing the throttle body snychronisation, noticed i need a tool with some gauges and tubes coming from it. Any help appreciated if someone can already do it or help me source the tool. If i can suss it then it's going to be a wack of money saved for everyone!

they way i see is if someone can do a bit of this and that then all we have to do is travel to each others places to get the various jobs done.

northwind
19-05-07, 07:12 PM
Tell your bank, tell the police, you should be OK... Any ID taken? Credit cards stolen abroad can be a right bugger sometimes, but as long as you inform your bank and law enforcement you should get any losses returned to you. Or at least, any real bank will refund it. The local authorities in tourist areas will usually take it quite seriously but your bank's likely to just cancel the card and write off any loss unless it's huge- that's what we usually do, especially cross border, the chance of getting any meaningful prosecution's too slim.

Also, hope you're ok ;)

Thanks for the info.

I was sitting in my office in Motherwell doing some OT while this git was off skinin me.

I was thinking yeah Milan area code 0141 lol!

The rest of the call wasn't that funny. So some dude robbed me of 400 euro

A well, cards cancelled. Pain in the backside more than anything.

hey, take yer time postie, the slower you are the less work i have!

btw, Cam - been done with the cloned card thingy im with the rbs bank and they were brilliant it's amazing what checks they have in place that can spot these things, they called me within a couple of hours of it going on and had already put a stop on my card, you will probably be sent out a disclaimer to sign and send back, once youve done that then the money will be put back in. Some git used my card to top up a virgin mobile payg phone in the cambridge area whilst i was 'up here' - silly people - don't they realise it can still be traced!

northwind
20-05-07, 03:20 PM
Pretty much all PAYG topups get routinely checked, for a long time about 40% of all credit card fraud was on phones. Nobody really gets caught for it, the hardware's available to trace an unregistered phone but it's not really practical in numbers. But most banks will tell the phone provider at least, and get the line blocked.

You've got "real" suspension on your bike though. ;) Nothing really subjective about setting up suspension on a stock SV. The only thing you can do is set the rider sag (preload) and that's universally 25mm whatever your weight. The downside is that most people set discover they need stiffer springs to achieve proper rider sag.

I agree it does become subjective when you introduce compression and rebound but since there's no damping adjustment on an SV there's nothing to worry about.

Do they have those on an SV? If they have markers like "-...+" or "softer...harder" then that's the rebound damping adjustment screws. I can't remember seeing those on an SV before but it's been a while. More likely to be a locking screw to take the top caps off for fitting springs. Can you sned a pic?

stuartyboy

Ah right....no that's your preload adjustment. Most bikes have flats on the sides for adjusting the preload using a spanner and a small centre screw inside that for adjusting the rebound.
