If anyone does keep poultry please can you say as I need to know something about infectious diseases that can be communicated to chickens.

Yes I know about bird flu and foul pest :D but is there anything else. A client is buying land that has had chickens on it and he wants to buy a new flock to put on the same land, I can't have the hens dropping dead on him within a day of buying the land.

Nope.. but one day it would be neat to have a couple maybe... Love the idea of eggs fresh from the chicken's @rse for breakfast.

(more down to my idealistic tendency towards subsistence farming which I'm far too lazy to actually do...)

Just asked my colleague who keeps 20 odd chickens on his smallholding and he doesn't think there are any special precautions needed to put chickens on land where others have previously been. There are infectious diseases between birds but he doesn't think there's any issue with contamination of the land between one lot of occupants and the next.

Cheers Keith

There are 140 diseases listed here (http://www.thepoultrysite.com/diseaseinfo/index.php)

When we kept chickens we never had a problem of infection. however that predates avian flu etc. being passed from the wild population.

Best hens for me has to be Rhoadies. But we used to keep bamtams for the kids to look after

Don't joke about that, it's possible.

I read some journalist not that long ago that ordered a complete set of Anthrax, by feeding the suppliers a story of complete bull.

What's the world coming to?

Thank you peeps!!! I knew I could rely on the org!

This is a beautiful house near Welshpool, with a whacking great garden. It is simply idyllic, I wish I could afford it. They want to keep rare breed chickens because they're pretty and yes they'd like the eggs. I had in mind that some sort of chicken virus could possibly live in the soil and infect the new flock when they started scratching around. So now I have asked a few quezzies of the seller that makes me sound well informed on chicken disease:cool:

What a claim to fame - world expert on chicken ****
