Hi guys,

I've just secured a job at the Honda facory and will be starting there on 4th June.

Does anybody know the better areas of Swindon to move to?? Me and the mrs will probly still rent for a bit before buying, but obviously, dont really fancy living in the swindon equivalent of Moss Side!! :D !!

I'm orignally from the area so know where most stuff/places are so shouldnt really have any probs finding anywhere.

Cheers

Martyn

I would avoid anywhere with a SN postcode, surely the commute won't be that bad?

Well I'll be fair its not that everywhere is like the famous Moss Side its just the whole of Swindon is a bit sh!t really. Theres not alot to do here and coming from a city that has culture to one thats center of culture is officially the Magic Roundabout (otherwise known as the Highways Agency's acid trip) is a big step down. I came up from Bristol myself and am doing my best to escape.

Sorry for making it sound all depressing. But to answer your question, the areas to avoid are the 6 P's - Pinehurst, Park North, Park South, Penhill, Grange Park and theres another that I can't remember. I used to live in New Town, the center and everyone says that its rough but I never got any problems as the Hookers and Dealers realized I just lived round there after a couple of weeks. There are some other places that are better than above but not brilliant, a mate lives in Westleaze and says to avoid it but hes the only one I hear that from.

So wheres the best places? Really there are only two options the new developments off of Thamesdown Drive, the Abby Meads, St. Andrews Ridge, Ash Brake area all near the Orbital Shopping Centre. And thinking about it Churchward didn't seam that bad either, thats nearer the Outlet Centre. These developments are full of young professionals and there are lots of houses to rent available. Your final option is Old Town its the posher area of the town as the chaves don't like walking up the hill but is more expensive. Having said that I rent in Old Town as I found a good deal, the downside is being its on a new development that is still being built so I have a new appreciation for diggers at 7 in the morning.

Hope some of my ranting helps ;)

Personally I'd try to live a bit closer to Cirencester if you can afford it. They have a better class of scrote than Swindon.

Or Wootton (sp?) Basset?

I lived in Swindon for 7 years.

Have a look at Wooton Basset, now the hospital bypass is finished it'd be an easy commute to Honda.

Or West Swindon areas behind Shaw Ridge such as Middleleaze and Ramleaze out to Lydiard Millicent but you'd be at J16 and have to go down the M4 to J16 and then up which would be a pain.

Covingham and the "Birds" Estate is okay, well established. Purton and Cricklade are smaller towns nearby.

Avoid Penhill & Toothill and anywhere close to them, avoid in progress or just finished new build developments as you won't know what they'll end up like and a % will have been allocated for housing associations and the like in order to get planning permission.

Oh, and Manchester Road area is the curb crawling district. In fact forget anywhere near the Magic Roundabout.

Cheers guys. I had heard that the town is full of its fair share of pimps and hookers.

I'm originally from Bibury but i think its fair to say we wont be moving to there!! lol !! We'll probly move to cirencester, its just the mrs I'm worried about as her bike isnt on the road at the moment and so has to rely on public transport. She's trying to get an apprenticeship as a motorbike mechanic and so swindon will be the most likely place to find one, unless anyone know's anyone after an apprentice anywhere else in the vacinity??

I have lived in Swindon all my life and its not as bad as people make out. Sure it has its bad area's but doesn't most places? As said avoid anywhere that starts with a 'P' with Purton being the exception. Take a look at Liden, Covingham and Nythe all nice areas and only 5 mins drive to the Honda factory.

Cheers
