View Full Version : service?
And thats with 25 minutes sitting around waiting for the oil to run out! I was quoted £160! lol!
Nah, check the clutch adjustment, throttle freeplay, and lube various parts of the bike in 25mins.
I've balanced carbs before, not sure how you'd go about balancing an FI bike?! I thought it did it itself!?
Under the tank on a pointy there's an adjuster screw per cylinder (well, per throttle body really). All you're doing by sync'ing them is making sure that the throttle bodies fire at roughly (depends how accurate your equipment is really) the same time, and therefore don't put any untoward pressure on things like the crank.
Well, that's my understanding of it anyway.
EDIT: I don't know how, but this post appears to of moved to #1 in the thread. It should be #22.
my k5 is 2 years old in july but it has only done 1100miles.
question is do i get it serviced by the dealer and get a stamp for about £80 or buy the correct oil and genuine filter and keep the reciept (for records)and do it myself?

You bought your bike the same time as me did exactly the same mods, exhaust etc but you've only done 1,100 miles......... I've managed to clock up 30,000 in that time.
I'd say get a dealer service but i'm nuts cos i still get mine dealer serviced depite the milage.

I'd just go out and ride it instead ;)
I service my bikes myself and keep the receipts. It's cheaper and when it comes to selling the bike any biker will understand why you've done it this way.

Change the oil, I wouldn't bother with the filter. Oil goes off over time so you'll need to change it. You're more likely to end up having hassles with bits not getting used enough - tyres going off (5 years) petrol stagnating or battery dying if it's not ridden enough - than you are to need things checking for wear and tear.
The £80 is for the peace of mind and the stamp rather than actually doing anything of value/use to your bike.

I'm about to do my 2 year service DIY,
Dealers are quoting in the region of £170-230 all for an oil change (not filter) plugs and many inspections. Bike is now out of warranty so that wont be affected.
And besides its laughable for an engineer to send a bike to an engineer to do some work!
Just need to get hold of some carb balancers!
Oh btw, I bought all the kit inc an NWS stand, and im still going to save over £50 on the cheapest quote.

im similar in this one to you guys, im at the 7000 miler now but the dealer is saying 230 for a service minus valve clearence? dont even know what that is, im really low on the technical sides of bikes
so i guess id have to pay it
7000mile service DOES NOT include the valve/shim check anyway!
The 15000 mile service deals with that check!
To do everything including a valve check, my local dealership quoted £160 all in.
You guys posting about £230 etc are suffering from daylight robbery! I service my own now, and I find it hard to beat dealership quotes just buying my own oil!
If I was quoted at £230 for just an oil change, the person on the other end of the phone would be greeted with the sound of the phone hanging up! Takes all of half an hour max (taking it slowly) to drop the oil & put new oil in. Buy the expensive oil at £31 for 4ltrs, and you're talking £400/ph roughly! The inspections to the bike can be done whilst the oil is draining out the sump plug.

is that all it is?
7000mile service is oil/filter change, air filter clean/change. Check & replace spark plugs if needed. Lube various points on the bike, and not that much more that I can remember.
Someone will be along shortly to fill in the gaps in my memory.

I am suggest you be selling bike immediately as you obviously have no use for one.

Huh??
I'm about to self service my K5.
I had quotes from a Suzuki dealer (on my home PC) and I'm doing it myself mostly to save money. I'll save more than I'd get in extra value when selling the bike over the time\mileage I intend to have it.
Also I have a deep distrust of bike dealerships based on a combination of personal experiance and other peoples recounted experiances.
I'm combining the 4000(12month) and 7500m(24month) services due to me being a bit late on the mileage front and the fact it's not been serviced in 2 years.
That means on top of what Baph said (and I'm going from memory here too) brake fluid wants changing as does coolant. Oh and throttle body balance wants checking though that's prolly going to wait a bit.
I bought the service kit from M&P. £30 for 4l oil, 2 x plugs & a non OEM oil filter. I'm not too keen about the filter but I'm going to risk it. I also bought brake fluid and coolant from them to save hassle. £45 + £5 P&P to my door. I've also bought an ABBA stand to make working on it easier. That was a bit pricey but it is a joy to use and I'm hoping it sees enough use to justify itself.
That all said - If I did your sort of mileage and a dealer quoted £80 to give it a once over change the oil and stamp the book I'd just pay the £80.

You ride a pointy (as I'm now told that poinites are easier to balance than curvies), so give me some time to beat my neighbour with a large blunt object, and bring the bike to Ponderosa again in a couple of weeks or so.
I'll balance your throttle bodies in the car park at Ponderosa for you if you haven't had the chance to get it done before. Subject to weather that is obviously, otherwise we can just find somewhere under cover to do it.
Don't put throttle bodies off for too long, it feels like it runs like a bag of spanners (mine was doing just that this last weekend).
If I've not done it by the time I'm next up you're on! :-)
However I'm hoping that a local friend is going to stick in hand in his pocket, failing that I might have a go at making a DIY one up (there was a link on here somewhere).

It puts the fuel in by itself with the FI. The natural suck pulls the air in. However it's useful to even up the suck to each cylinder... just as you would on a carb'ed machine. :-)
i may do it myself just need a definate price for the oil and filter now, but if i am only going to save £20-£25 may as well get the dealer to do it and get the book stamped.
