View Full Version : Knee down?

Am i too chubby or too tall for the SV to get my knee down, or am i just a pu55y? I have watched the various videos online and read the various reports. I just seem to find it difficult. Has anyone had the problem before with being a bit too tall (even though i thought maybe this would be better).
Cheers

Its all about technique and body position. Your height or body shape has nothing to do with it, if you can't do it then your body position isnt right or you're just not hanging off enough.
I'm 6ft and I can't do it on either of my bikes....
Find a quiet roundabout and practice and then practice some more.

Never done it on the road, but have done so plenty on track. Get yourself out on a track day and your knee will soon be kissing the tarmac all by itself.

It will feel like this at first. However, when you're getting your knee down, the bike is actually more upright than you think.
Knne down is about hanging off the bike, not getting the bike leant over (unless you're racing).
I don't really bother moving around on the bike much, unless it's wet out etc & I don't want to lean the bike over much. Usually I ride bolt upright, and I tend not to hang about.
I prefer concentrating on lines etc, and even though I still feel damn close to the edge of the tyre, my current "strips" are about 1cm wide.
Nice to say you've done it I reckon, but not all that useful, except as I said above, for the times you want to ride quick but don't want to lean the bike over too much.

I get my knee down no probs on the SV and still have a 1mm chicken strip on the front. Use all of the back though for some reason! It is body position, once I got that right I had no probs, took a year of trying though! lol
Keep practicing!

ok so we are down to positioning now. Forward or back on the seat firstly?
ok so we are down to positioning now. Forward or back on the seat firstly?
Forward on the seat (not quite making love to the tank though). Bum half out of the seat to the side. Inside foot (left if a left bend etc) tucked neatly in the very corner of the peg. Knee out at roughly 40degrees to the bike. Outside elbow resting on the tank for grip. Move shoulders to the inside of the bend, you should be able to see your soon to be smug face in your mirror (as in visor should be visible in mirror).
If that's all done correctly and you're not scraping your knee, more practice needed. Oh, and don't look in your mirror whilst going around the bend (practice that bit in a straight line first)!

its all about body possition, i have a friend who can get his knee down with the bike almost upright (less than 15 degrees lean) because he is hanging off it so much. doesnt help him get round corners any quicker than anyone else but it does look pretty cool.

back on the seat. so that you can get a fist between you & the tank when sitting on the center-line

I'd call that forward in the seat  Compared to my normal position when on a hoon anyway. That's the position I'm in most of the time, and I only ever move back from there.

I have been trying for ages to get my knee down... I have even managed to scrape the pegs, it must be poor body position. Practice makes perfect I suppose !!

Just go on a track day...it's much easier than the road! (Have done both)
That way not only will you get your knee down, but if you're good enough, you'll also get the end bolt on the end of your pegs down, and after you've taken them out, your actual pegs themselves! :D
(Just don't get too cocky like me and come off near the end of the day) :(

I still can't do it either. My brother was following me the other evening, he said I'm nearly there.
I need to do a track day really, I dont feel confident lent right over and thats what I need to work on and you can't IMHO do it safely on the road.

On a track it's pretty easy as I said earlier, going through Gerrards at Mallory this weekend (knee is just skimming the tarmac):

But I never get near this on the road.

I've never got a kneedown on a public road. don't think I'd want to really, unless there was some nice shellgrip'd roundabout near me
I got my toe down twice on my last two track days (have slightly lowered Buell pegs). Should I have been able to do it? Am I right in thinking your bum crack needs to be nicely straddling the edge of the seat with the outside thigh gripping the tank? I'm determined to do it at Druids this coming track day.

Ive been actively trying this for weeks, the thing is with me is i think im hanging off . . . and im really not lol, i glance down and knee is still pointing up . . GRR except this once when i scraped my toe sliders, so the bike MUST be going down far enough, WHY CANT I DO IT ! ! ! !
its like a right of passage to me, Just need to get that technique down.

on my old zzr the footpegs were low and i went through a toe slider and was eating into my boot! so i know where your coming from lylej technique is the key and i aint got it.

I had this for a while too. You have to hang off what seems to be ridiculously far and bring your upper body down and to the inside of the corner too. You want too be gripping the tank with your outside thigh, like you said, and your outside arm should come down to rest on the tank too.
A trackday really is the best place to do it as there's loads of grip and you can keep doing the same corners over and over with a bit more speed and lean.
That MCN video is a very good explaination of it. "MCN" and "good" in the same sentence? George Bush will be making an intelligent comment next! :)

im getting there, i really am, im getting some of the race footpegs and stuff from JHS racing. i will touch down its just dam dangerous on the road and loads less disireable with your knee down and whilst doing so rear end a car.
but im getting there
Lyle I dunno if you've ever done a track day but when you get a corner right with your body real low and your head pushing out past the mirror you just know it aint gonna be that far away. I've got Brands in a couple of weeks and can't wait to try out Druids again! I would never even contemplate going fast enough on the roads around here to get the right angle. Think the very few track days I've done has made me even more wary of dangers on the road.
I wouldn't have said that buying rearsets and stuff would help too much would it?

it probably wont make any difference at all to be honest, but i just like the higher peg position, might enable me to keep my feet on my peg instead of reaching.

Get someone to take a pic of you hanging off. Then post it on here. It's so much easier to see what's going on from a picture!
And don't look down at your knee!
and have a look at this - remember the key is body positioning.
