Depends on the exhaust, but it's normally 45-50mm from the weld on the stock pipework. The exhaust forum at http://forums.sv650.org/forumdisplay.php?f=137 has some piccys kicking around in there.
It's VERY subjective about cans. Mine was cut about 1-2mm from the weld, for a scorpion high level, just so that the end of the can was in the right place at the back of the bike.
The strap that holds it in place (goes around the can) is still too far forward, so the can wobbles around a lot. Handy thing though, as when giving it some beans, the can wobbles more, and creates more pops/bangs due to air leaks.
Ive got a fuel can with a high level carbon can co link pipe, gonna try fit it when i get home tonight, got the fuel can for £25 delivered off ebay tiny little scuff on the inside of it cant really see its smaller than a 5p.
Cheers people very handy

Should have all the info you need.
Remember measure twice, cut once. You want to measure backward from the weld on the exhaust. I've marked the weld with a red arrow

A Fuel can with a CCC high level link pipe??
Are you sure they'll fit together? Please tripple check before cutting your exhaust. It could all end in tears!!
Ill check they go together 2day, if not a bit of bodging will get the thing together, i was just worried about were to cut the standard stuff, cheers for all your help n the pics.
Will let you know how it went.

Get at least 3 high speed(Red Stanley ones) brand new hacksaw blades, unless you are using an engle grinder. Make sure you cut straight and not at an angle, put some tape round the pipe to help with this.

Hitting the link pipe on with a hammer gets it forward too, and gets a good seal (did this tonight), but tap it gently and use some packing. Mine was a low level link pipe so was the blows kind of lined up.

I just put on my CCC can. You might be tempted to hacksaw it with the pipes on the bike.... DON'T! It may only be just possible but much more difficult. Once you've removed the pipes and with a sharp blade it's not to hard to keep the cut straight with the pipe having an inner lining and most of all that most famous quote:
Remember measure twice, cut once.
Have fun it sounds soooo much better.

Managed mine on the bike but the last bit of the cut was a little awkward and snapped the handle 2/3 of the way through. Still a good way to spend the evening in the sun.
