View Full Version : Calling Mr Pie...
Filipe my friend, you sir, are a genius :D
OK, background for those that don't know (everyone except me & Filipe then):
I've been wanting a louder horn for a long time, and I came up with the bright idea of just sticking an identical horn to mine on the other side of the bike. Problem being, I wasn't sure how this would affect to noise made when I hit the button. Knowing what Filipe does for a living, I picked his brains a little.
Filipe, just for information, I got lazy at first, and just wired them in series hoping the phase would be right. It wasn't :( So a little jiggery pokery re-wiring type stuff, and bingo, phase is perfect.
So now, my stock horn has been replaced by two Stebel Magnums. On the North Wales ride, the comment I got was that my bike had a "loud horn for a bike."
Now it sounds quite loud for a truck. Perfect :D :smt057 For those that have heard my horn, double it and you're somewhere close. :D
Filipe my friend, for the simple phase conversation we had, if you ever get over here, you'll have a steady supply of beers.

No problem mate, but make that Coke, I don't do beer! ;)

Done, and I'll also throw in a free fire extinguisher ;)
EDIT: I keep going outside, turning the ignition on, hitting the horn, then turning it all off again & coming back in giggling like a school girl. I SOOOOO can't wait for the next person to step out in front of my bike :D
I tried sniffing coke once but the bubbles went up my nose.

Try shaking it for a bit, it helps clear out the bubbles.
blueflame has a loud horn too. maybe you two can have the loudest horn competition at annual run lol

bluepete showed me his horn and I must say it was rather loud....;)

I want a Motrax animal horn on mine..they come in a variety of voices
Horse, frog, dog, cow etc and er...train..
can you imagine how high somebody would jump If they heard a train coming!!!!!!!!!!

its only a guess, but i reckon they'd only be concerned if they were on a railway line at the time

TSM had a very loudhorn on his SV too. Whenever i'd ride with him thru town and he'd use it i swear cagers would look around for the nearest articulated lorry and be amazed when a bike went past them. PMSL.

See, that's what I'm going for!
I'm thinking of adding some small airhorns to it too. :D That would make 4 horns on my bike in total!

Chuckle, loud pipes don't save lives if you've already deafened everyone :p

Well I'm already at a theoretical 142dbA (haven't tested it, it could be ever so slightly out of phase).
Filipe, adding a couple of air horns, cones perpendicular to the original set, and around 7cm away... add another 3dbA per horn? :D Obviously this will have a different wave signature, as I'm going from electric horn to air horn...
EDIT: Tested the horn this morning (no reason to use it, just figured I would :D)... and at silly speeds, I can definitely hear the horn. :D

Eep! http://www.dangerousdecibels.org/hearingloss.cfm - reckons a jet engine at 100ft is about 135db :D And extrapolating the hearing damage chart there suggests hearing damage incurred at 142db after 0.05 seconds :p
Ah, but you see, it's all about distance. I'm talking 0.4m from the horns. At 2m from the horns, I'm already down to something around 115dbA. 115dbA takes 30secs to cause damage.
When I'm sat on the bike, my ears are probably more than 0.5m away from the horns!
That site lists 135dbA as being a jet engine at 100ft away. If I can get close to 145dbA (gun shot), then I might be happy.

142 dBA @ 40 cm from the cones, assuming everything adds up nice and pretty. Take 3 dB for each doubling of the distance, plus some transmission losses due to directivity, barrier effect and other assorted wotsits and the result will be a f***ing loud horn. HTH.
Edit: wot Baph sed.

Looks like I'm changing brake pads on the front end & adding some air horns next weekend then. :D

Ahh, good point :) (though the gunshot idea has me thinking of ways much more effective to get people's attention....)
How is db affected by distance - is it a flat line or an inverse curve like gravity and the like? (appreciate air pressure, humidity etc. is going to impact).
It's a logarithmic scale. If it was linear, then I might not of needed Filipe's help, but I couldn't be bothered with all the maths, and he probably has spreadsheets he can just quickly plug numbers into :)
Edit: I can do a gunshot sound whenever I like. I know the perfect RPM to let go of the throttle in anything below 4th gear to get the scorpion to pop & bang :D Oh yea, and I timed it nicely... my horn IS louder than my exhaust when poping/banging :D

Log scale in Pascal (sound pressure), linear scale in dB (sound pressure level). Take 3 dB for each doubling in distance (with is the same as halving the values in Pa).

Slight derail :) Many moons ago, on my little RG250 I was bimbling along and saw a horsey up ahead. So, knowing that even on tickover that thing was damn noisy, I killed the engine and coasted by. Jodper clad horsey lady was very impressed and gave me a cheery wave as I coasted by completely silently. Teensy bit further up the road I restart the engine, the thing backfires like a barsteward and in my mirrors I see jodper horsey lady not looking quite so cheery now ;) Horse was sideways

yeh, reminds me i need to make the TT louder
Just to drag this up a little :D Got my bullet cam today. So had a little play (30secs worth so far).
Comparison of the exhaust & the horn. See below.
Excuse the wires, I just slapped it all on the main seat to get it to record & test the mic. Also, don't mind my old man "That sounds like it's blowing a bit." Bless him. I stopped the recording as I was saying "It does a little bit, but that makes it pop & bang on roll off. :D"

That's as she sounds now... and I want a louder horn :D
I had a beaut yesterday. Stopped off in the death trap (sorry, Tesco car park, same thing) so I could get a drink & chill for a few mins (mind was starting to drift whilst on the bike). Setting off back out, a car decided he was going to turn into a space. No problem. Then the numpty stopped, started reversing to go into a different space.
I was just at an angle where he couldn't see me, because of his movements. HOOONKKKK! The guy visibly jumped in his seat!
