Bloke on LB, you'll be glad to know he was walking wounded.
Sounds like after clipping a car he emergency braked with tank slapper into railings.
He is unsure if wheel collapsed before impact as a result of braking/tank slapper.
Apparently the wheel was previously repaired (by a reputable company)

Ouch, doesn't surprise me though with the dodgy Suzuki build quality...just lucky on most of the GSX-Rs it's cosmetic bits that are the problem...

Just a quick one lads n lasses, This is what happens to alloy wheels if you powder coat them.

The heating process changes the alloy at a molecular level. Seen it all to often on the car forums.

Love it!:p

It would never have happened to a spoked wheel...

After careful consideration dave decided that the drilling the spokes wasnt the best way to save weight, you could say the wheels fell off the weight loss campaign.

Sorry had to.......

K6 600's come with wheels that colour from the factory. So thats not aftermarket powercoat.

They're steel too aren't they?

It was repaired though, I wonder if that might have been the cause?

That was my point. Most reputable powder coaters won't do wheels. If it was done as part of a re furb then it could have been the cause.

All I know is in Germany for instance, where everything has to be TUV approved. The wheel re furbishers won't powder coat them. Your lucky if they'd even chrome them. All they offer is a polishing service after a repair. Or paint.

If I was to damage a wheel on the bike to the point where it needed straightning I think I'd bin it rather than repair it.

I guess, at least with a car you have another wheel or two you could rely on.

As Fizz pointed out above, they are standard colour wheels, so powder coating was not the previous repair.
I think the issue is whether the "braided lines" were so powerful and the "bt014s" so sticky that the wheel collapsed riding along the road leading to an accident. Or whether the accident led to the wheel collapsing.

Once you've had an accident, then it doesn't really matter if your wheel collapses or your forks crumple IMO something's obviouly going to need repairing or replacing.

@ Stu, point taken matey. Was just backing up what I had said earlier. I put it up as a warning as opposed to pointing the finger and implying that was the cause.

Who knows what happened? we can only speculate.

Just figured I'd give it mention, so if people want to powder coat their wheels on a refurb they'd be armed with enough info to make an informed decision.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

Hmm............had our wheels powder coated 50,000-odd miles ago...........still in the bike the last time I looked:D

Worried? Us? Nope!

They're steel too aren't they?

Don't think so. Nearly all wheels are alu now. Except for the spoked/tubed tyre ones.

The new spokeless wheel design didn't work quite liked the engineers had hoped.

Engineers have now begun work on a revised design using air spokes in the hope these will add more stability to the bike without adding and more unsprung weight.
