View Full Version : Decided to try crashing on the right this time...

The left was getting a bit worn down...

I was on my way to the ecosse rideout this morning, about 2 minutes from my house, coming up to a roundabout. There's 2 lanes that go onto it, there was stationary traffic in the left (someone being very hesitant) but I was turning right, so just went straight onto the roundabout. At the next entrance, someone in a big dark estate just came straight out and into my lane without apparently slowing. He might have a little, not sure.

On balance I thought the better of just riding straight into him so I stood it up, braked, just enough to not hit him and sent me past the back of him... Leaned it back over to try and complete the turn but the tyres were still cold and it was just a bit too much too fast, rear end swung out and that was it, slide slide.

The guy didn't stop- good chance he never even knew I was there in fact- but luckily the nice lady behind me did, when presented with the option of either helping or driving over my face. She parked up to block the lane- very well done in fact- and I got the bike up, checked it and me over, nothing too bad. Lots of cosmetic damage, but not so much as a bruise on me and the bike looked rideable. Went back to clean up the wee bits of debris and found amongst them, a footpeg. Perhaps my initial inspection was a little incomplete... Rode off to the meeting point with my leg hanging in the air to tell them what had happened, rode home with my leg resting on the crash bung

Not too much damage really...

This hit the kerb... There's actually road rash on the indicator bulb, but it still works! Uncanny. Tank is fine. Lovely Pazzo shorty lever obviously damaged but still works perfectly, I like that- it probably hit the kerb too, the master cylinder was halfway round the bars and snapped a retaining bolt. My plastic welding on that fairing is clearly better than I thought! The biggest downer is my SRAD titanium axle, it's ground down slightly- made a LOT of sparks. But perhaps it'll clean up.

Crash protection, and crash not-protection... Motosliders worked, Valter Moto rearset just sheared on impact, I found it almost right by where the bike touched down. Fair play, sometimes stuff doesn't work how you'd like.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/Northwindlowlander/Picture034.jpg

Very small amount of damage back here... Can looks worse than it is.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/Northwindlowlander/Picture031.jpg

My gear did its job very well- I'm a bit brittle as I've mentioned, but totally unhurt so here's a BIG shout for Teknic and Furygan, Knox and T-Pro. Helmet doesn't get one as it never touched down. The trousers are probably wrecked, but remained intact and protective. Jacket's a little scabby but survived perfectly, I'll just keep on wearing it. Scars add character. Very impressed by the hip armour, it wouldn't take much to rebreak my hip or to do muscle damage (the metalwork can cause problems) so to have not so much as a twinge is good, it did hit the deck hard. I was planning to sell the jacket

Soooo... I think that the guy probably saw the stopped car on my left and assumed all the traffic had stopped, rather than not looking at all. Still bad, but not as bad as not looking. With hindsight I could have made the next exit on the roundabout instead of turning back into it, probably... But I don't think I really did wrong there, under the circumstances.

So much for a year and a half of incident-free riding :smt120 But it's roadworthy again now with a stock footrest back on, and should still pass its MOT in 2 days :)

Anyone got a Valter Moto footpeg? :)

Glad you are OK Northy.

Oh and a question, is that an oil temperature or pressure guage in place of your oil filler cap. Looks quite neat.

Good to hear that you're OK and that the bike is relatively unscathed. I assume you'll still be at the AR. And good luck with the MOT.

SV Ecosse ride out strikes again! I'm amazed anyone has the courage to turn up!

Glad to hear your OK, shame about the bike... Anyone get the car details, or you having to pay-up yourself?

Ah, well, I didn't actually turn up ;) But, Jim@55 outdid me a bit last time by crashing on the very first corner of the rideout, a gauntlet was thrown down. I think me and Big Al now share the honours, he didn't make it out of his street one time but he has a very long street. Soon we'll be crashing in our garages, then getting zombie Norris McWhirter in to measure the total difference travelled. "17cm! A new world record!"

No clue about the other car unfortunately... Don't even know what model it was, dark green Audi A4 estate I think but I could be wrong. Should've hit him :) I'm insured comp but there's no point, I can replace the damaged parts for under £100, £150 tops I reckon and the paint wasn't perfect in the first place- I'll get some filler on it today and do a quick and dirty respray this week, it'll be shoddy but it'll do for now. Nothing to get worked up over- one of the reasons I've stuck with the SV is that you can bang them up and they usually fix with a hammer and some tar :smt109

Temperature... It doesn't really work, not enough oil fling in an SV to give a good reading I think, but it does look nice :smt040

A bit drastic excuse to get out of an ecosse rideout and besides your meant to do when we have all met up and everyone can enjoy the circus.

Seriously glad your alright and if you're that brittle (which you obv aint) I'll stop the bear hugs

Hey, I made it, long journey on the M8 to the meeting point on my own, and almost didn't make it back. Was blinded buy a fly, so almost missed the corner for a bridge, then had a close encounter with the bridge wall after misjudging the same corner after sight was semi restored. So I ask you... Are we brave or stupid?

Are we brave or stupid?

Hmmmm....a bit of both. I can barely move my feckin elbow now and my thumb looks like its been stung by a wasp or something. Elbow in ice as I sit here typing one handed. That 2 miles of gravel on the way into Moffat wasn't funny at all.

Andy - sorry about the off :(

Sorry to hear of the off Northy. Glad your brittle bones are OK.

I've crashed in the garage too, but managed to jump clear. I was trying to ride up a 6 inch step onto the concrete garage base when it was just built, and dropped it!

Just been swapping stuff about, nearly got it back to normal apart from the paint... I'll start on that tomorrow I think. Not ideal timing though, my MOT was going to be marginal even without the crash damage :)

Glad to here that there's no serious damage, but sounds a good excuse for a new paintjob!

Hope the bike flies through the MOT (I believe you can't fail on paintwork..)

Yeah, but it makes a bad first impression :smt120 There's actually one stone-cold fail on the bike, for a damaged fork stanchion, nothing that effects it on the road of course. Been putting off replacing it til an upgrade comes along, so, if he sees it I may be in trouble... But it's quite far behind the leg, so I'm just going to wing it.

10-06-07, 10:45 PM
Yep, well, other than the paint, the right hand grip and the span adjuster on the lever that's it more or less back to normal... Managed to hide the damage on the bars with a bigger bar end from Halfords  So I just splatched a load of filter onto the fairings and now it looks... Well, still s**t :) But it's much better than it was. Put a regular end can on it, it's about 20 feet long compared to my usual one :)

Buggerloo mate. Glad you got away without any damage to person. You know my spares are your spares but unfortunately I've got no blingy spares :smt089 ;)

I've been think I might come up to one of the Ecosse rideouts but perhaps best to give it a miss eh... ;)
