'S ok, for an IL4. Those were the sports bikes that caught my eye while out shopping this last weekend. Black is v. cool indeed.

I saw a couple for sale recently along with a couple of Kawasaki Ninja 6Rs
Must say that the Kawasaki looked better built with much more attention to detail than the Gixxer.
However, I understand that the Gixxer is generally better to ride, unless you are a real 'headbanger'

No can do I'm afraid, the girlfriend will be going on it. Could get them powdercoated black or something, I suppose...
The only thing I'm not that keen on with the exhaust is the way you can see the cat (or whatever it is) underneath. The can itself is pretty good for a stubby can, imo - and alas I haven't found a nice aftermarket one yet (nice enough to buy that is ;) ).
The finish on these is quite weak btw...so I wouldn't be surprised if the Ninjas were better quality. I thought the SV was supposed to be of dodgy quality due to the fact it was a budget bike, but I think it's the fact it was a Suzuki now! (though incidentally the finish seems much less fragile than the GSX-R!)

Cracking looking bike, I quite like the exhaust.
Hopefully a similar machine will be the next adittion to the Tricky fleet.
Unfortunately Mrs Tricky has decided to upgrade Tricky Towers (and hence Tricky's mortgage) so it may be some time. :(

eww! that doesn't look as nice as yours.
I'd love a go on a Gixxer. ;)
Stunning bike bud! Was so tempted myself, but everyone said start with the SV and i'm glad i took their advice.... Maybe in a year or so, i'll follow your route.
How does it ride in comparison (apart from being quicker obviously :) )?

Heheh, Hovis it looks like not everyone likes a yellow GSX-R ;)
Law - there's already a queue lol! If I ever turn up to one of the meets I'll not see my bike the whole time!
JACE - in comparison to the SV, it's got lower bars, you lean further forward (more weight on wrists), and cos of that slow speed control is a bit more awkward (hands get trapped against tank if not careful).
The suspension is WAY harder, the power delivery is a fair bit different obviously too - it's got a decent amount of power low down (don't let anyone tell you otherwise!), not quite as much as the SV between around 3000-6000 rpm, but after that it takes off. As a result people feel like it's got no power down low.
And it turns really nicely :D - as my mate (who's got the same bike and also had an SV K5 as his first bike) put it, with the SV you turned where you want to go and it would turn, but with the GSX-R you just think about it and it's leant right over going there!
belive it or not, im not to keen on the yellow gixxers either, although they look better than the toothpaste colour scheme:smt036
black is best
did you try a 750?
Looks great that does, nice one :D
That yellow/black scheme is crap for Suzuki, they need to bring back a decent yellow and black scheme like the K5 gsxr 1000 or k4 gsxr600 or of course srad 600 :D

Magic :D
And nope, didn't try a 750 actually. I knew I would only be getting the 600 because of the insurance deal at the time, it'd be a lot more for the 750 and I am/was happy to try out an IL4 600 for a while :)
Have you gone for a test ride on one yet? May as well do that, you don't *have* to buy it ;)

Why not test ride one then Law? Seriously.
I have test ridden a few in the past, just to get the possible idea that I 'want' a new bike out of my mind.
Probably annoys the sales person, but there is always the possibility that if
a bike really blows my mind that I may buy it.
Have always come back to the SV so far! ;)

Yep, I agree, I don't like the half black/yellow colour scheme.

What if I really like it, in which case I'm screwed, cos then I'll know they're actually great and I can't afford one! At the moment I will stick with thinking they just look nice.
I will test ride one when I have almost enough money to buy one, unless someone knows one going for the exact price of a used K5 SV!

....., unless someone knows one going for the exact price of a used K5 SV!I think Baph would be fighting over that with you. How close I came to him blaming me for getting a Gixxer last night....
Shhh! I'm still thinking of that as a weekend plaything, possibly. Depends on figures & how prepared they are to do a deal. Don't like that screen for one.
Still, used K5 will fetch around £2500, and you'd need to throw another £1100 at that to get the gixxer at Colwyn Bay.
EDIT: Yes, it is all your fault!!

Older shape. Still with FI though.
Still makes me chuckle thinking about it. I explained I was looking to part-ex the SV, and excused the high mileage (21k in 11months) because I commute on the bike. He went through the motions, then when I laughed at his offer for the SV, he came out with "Yea, I'm not sure the Gixxer would be right for your riding style, maybe the Falco?"
Erm, I commute, since when does that mean my riding style doesn't suit a screaming IL4? :D
Not chopping the SV, will make a decision by the end of the week as to if I want the gixxer as a play thing on the weekends.
Oh yea, and it already has a ridiculously small plate on it. When I inquired about that, I was told they'd have to put a legal plate on it, but obviously if it helps the sale, I could have the small plate (just not on the bike) as they have no use for it.

Was that a K4/5 then? I really like the look of that shape, I think the tail of it is just brilliant. And the headlight has the evil look compared to mine!
How much did he offer you for your SV?

Thanks for review muffles - i love your mates analogy of "Tron" like turning, i wants one even more now :D Alhough to be fair I've not even run the SV in yet and there's at least a years worth of fun left before i'd feel confident of going for GSX-R. Might go for a test ride though ;)

I think it was a K2, but not sure... Luckypants, you remember?
I was offered £2500 for the SV, hence my earlier comment.

I think that's probably rider dependent. My wife has the GSX-R600 K7 having had a SV650S K6 before. Due to the signifcantly shorter wheelbase of the gixxer her riding position is now more upright than before and because the seat is also nice and narrow it's the only 2007 supersport 600 she can comfortably get her feet down on.
Also, that stubby exhaust makes a fantastic sound for a stock system, no need to change to a race can just to be heard. On the downside, for trackdays it is confirmed that it won't pass a 105db limit if enforced (see Castle Combe circuit website if you doubt that point).
Muffles,
Dunno if you remember but a while back when you had your GSXR on order I was thinking about getting one too - well I managed to get our local dealer to let me have a test ride on a K6 and I put my money down for a black K7 the same as yours which I'm picking up on Saturday!
I thought I'd get it now too while the £99 insurance offer is still on. Just seen the pics of your bike, the dealer has fitted me an R&G tail tidy the same as yours - it looks like you have a smaller plate on - did you get that made locally to you or off t'internet?
I have to go to the delaers on the bus on Sat morn and then riding straight down to the wife's parents in East Grinstead (nr Gatwick) so I'll do a fair bit of the running in then.
I went by the dealers today to pick up the seat cowl and the HUGE original fit tail piece so I don't have to lash them to my helmet on Saturday and they said the bike was all made up out of the crate - they were waiting for the rain to stop so they could PDI it! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for decent weather over the weekend but I'm going to pick it up and ride it there and back whatever it's like - I'll probably stay up all Sunday night cleaning it if it's been raining!
Cheers,
Matt

Baph - I think for 3600 you could pick yourself up a K4 if you liked that shape better, just food for thought :)
Xan173 - I didn't know about the wheelbase actually! I just guessed - feels to me like the handlebars are the same distance horizontally but lower down. Definitely lower than the SV on the seat, though.
cartwrim - good to hear! I got the plate made on the internet, same place as my SV one - www.autoreg.net (http://www.autoreg.net) I believe. It's a 7x5 for reference :D
Only other thing I'd add is you might be interested in getting a ventureshield kit. The gixer paint (I think due to the latest regs) is pretty weak as it happens - this stuff protects a fair bit of the front of the bike, from stone chips, and also there's tank protection. Best place to get it, cos you get a 15% discount AND they have a couple of extra pieces that go on the tail, is www.rhinoprotect.co.uk/gixerjunkies.html (http://www.rhinoprotect.co.uk/gixerjunkies.html). It's only 80 quid this way, but before you get it beware it does take a bit of effort to fit and can be messed up (took me 2 kits!). But once on, it's brilliant. You can just about make out the piece on my lower fairing, just behind the wheel (see that line?).

p.s. Kinvig, being in Clapham you may well see me go by in the mornings :D
Muffles,
Cheers mate, will have to look in to that stuff - the paint certainly does semm a bit weak, I picked her up yesterday, and did this on my own for about 3 minutes:
:rave:
Then I rode down to East Grinstead down a mix of A roads, B roads and motorway, took about 4 hours! Running in is difficult - that engine just begs to be opened up! I got caught in LOTS of torrential rain in some parts but I felt very confident on it even through an inch of standing water and round islands, but that's another story! By the time I got there / here the paint on the tank has already lost its gloss! I don't appear to have any chips yet but I'm sure they'll come! I might get a Baglux tank cover / tank bag so I can put my sarnies in for work which will protect the tank but to be honest I'm going to try not to worry too much about protecting the finish. I've told myself, 'use it, enjoy it, replace worn out bits when necessary'. I'm going to be using it for commuting as well as pleasure so I think it's only a matter of time before it looks a bit shabby! :(
Anyway, it's done almost 200 miles yesterday, going to ride 200 back today, finish running in on Monday and get the oil changed on Tuesday so I can start using it properly!
It's absolutely amazing!
Cheers,
Matt

I know what you mean about just thinking "I'll use it as it's supposed to be used!" - I almost resigned myself to that, but managed to find this stuff. If you do decide to go for it and want any more info just give me a shout - I was apprehensive but I'm definitely a convert now!
And congrats again on the new bike - I remember what it's like running it in - going to 10,000rpm after the first service will be a good feeling, and then when it's fully run in....heheh you'll enjoy it!
