If your removing the toilet pan just leave the water in it and carry it level and empty it out!

tie up the ball **** and then flush, the raised ball **** thinks the cistern is full and stops it from re filling:) you are serious right?

1) Purchace packet of Smash Instant Potato
2) Pour into toilet
3) Mix well

Then you can
a Scoup out with spoon
OR
b) Leave for few weeks until
i - its solid and can be pulled out as a lump
ii - its gone mouldy and climbs out itself

Ta da - empty :D

Sorry I just got in and all I can think about is FOOD (though not Smash specifically)

drill little hole in the bottom and then collect the water in cups, throw down sink, fill holes with filler, carry out maintenance, fill back up!!

Ta da all done.

But tht only keeps the cistern from refilling. The water that just left the cistern is now happily chilling in the pan below.

the good Dr seems to want to only empty the pan. Why? Who the hell knows. Dr's nowdays etc.

Big plunger into bowl and give it some. There will still be some water, remove with sponge. Or Smash if its easier as i liked BristolMatts idea a lot

Presto, empty pan. There will still be some water escaping a bit, as a biker you understand that nothing ever stays dry if water wants to get to it.

But, what maintenance are you doing? I'm baffled.

Or is this some diabolical psychological test you've snuck up on us?

take loads of inflated tyres into bathroom at 60psi. completely seal bathroom and make airtight. deflate tyres, increasing pressure in bathroom, pushing water around the u bend.

I've no idea why either or what maintenance would require the emptying of the pan and i'm a plumber!

What are you trying to do?

If you are taking the multi fit (drain) of the back you don't need to do anything cos the water in the bottom of the toilet is lower than the outlet (just - you may get a little spill). Just disconnect, if that's all your doing.

If you're removing the cistern (the water container on the top of the toilet) then you can either turn of the isolator valve near the water inlet if you have one, or like someone else said turn the main stop c*ck off. Flush toilet to remove most of the water reservoir. You can't get it all out without tipping the whole thing upside down. Disconnect overflow if you have one - and lift free. and of course disconnect the water inlet feed. You shouldn't spill any (perhaps a little that may be in the inlet pipe.

If you're cleaning the inside of the cistern or repairing then tie the ballc*ck in the up position (this plugs the inlet) and flush the water away.

What ever you're doing it is worth fitting an isolater valve whilst you're on but you will have to turn off water supply and cut the water inlet pipe to fit.

If you're just cleaning/descaling you can either leave the water in and fill with soda crystal or some other proprietry cleaner or empty by using any or all of the daft ideas suggested so far. Actually not so daft except using a straw - takes too long ;)

In any event you shouldn't have to drain the whole water supply system. :)

Wish people would fit isolater/service valves when they fit things it would make it so much easier for me

I design and sell bathrooms for a living and if we are doing the installation for the client too i'm forever teling the plumbers to put them in. Some are so resilient to the idea tho. Makes me mad!

They can be a pain if they leak, but they do save alot of time!!!

I didn't mean fitting them properly. How many have you been too where they start leaking from the isolation screw, bloody p!sses me off because theres no way of stopping it once it's going.

Fair point, i had one the other day that had siezed up, turning the screw had no effect at all, pain to deal with but then i was there longer and charged more ;)

The only sensible answer. Length of garden hose, pre fill with water, thumb over end to hols water in, one end in toilet bowl, one end in bucket (lower than bowl) remove thumb, water flows into bucket.

Really! Call yourselves men???

nah, bottom of bowl will be at least an inch off the floor, botton of bucket should be about 1/4 inch? 95% of the water will siphon out. If you need more out than that, sponge / rag.....

Something like this with a piece of hose on either end.

Google "drill powered pump" for others.

Did you drop something in the loo Rich and you dont want to get your hands wet...?

Get some liquid nitrogen, freeze the water and then just remove the block off ice...Or get a welding torch and melt the water

MELT WATER, how do you MELT WATER, evaporate maybe. but MELT!

 ALSO just to be totally anal retentive, if you FROZE the water wouldn't it expand and crack the bowl?

Sheeesh,

Sorry Falcon!

Drill powered pump sounds like a plan though!!!

Water volume increases by about 4 times when frozen but if you froze the water in the pan it would probably expand upwards so in theory it wouldn't crack the pan

Syphoning or the "small pump on a drill" thingy will work but, as someone else said, it's gonna stink with the U-bend empty.
