There seems to be a lot of smarties about IT on this board. So i wondering if it's really a bad idea to use kismac? Whilst at my gfs house theres about 6 wep or wpa protected networks which i wouldn't mind 'borrowing' ;) I can't do any kind of passive scans on the network, am i likely to get busted?

Unlikely, but is you do it can be bad.

Its regarded as theft you see.

And its not that undetectable - for example I have been know to run an unsecured (as in who can get in an IP address, all shares etc are password protected etc) network in the past when I have been messing around with this and that.

I would however know if my dhcp server had handed out more than the number of IP's it needs for the kit I have.

From there I have a number of choices,

1) Bust your ass to the police.

2) Lock you out of my network

3) Mess with your head.

Best head mess I ever heard of was a guy who discovered that his neighbour was mooching off of him.

So he re-arranged his DHCP server to server 2 ranges, the new one for him, the old one so his neighbour could still connect.

He then set up a proxy-server on the open network, forced all web traffic through it and then set up his server to flip all images upside down.

PICK THREE PICK THREE!!!! :smt112

As SoulKiss says, it carries risks. If they decide to call the police, all it takes is some decent radio gear to find you (directional antenna listening for your distinct Wifi packets).

That said, I have my car setup with a cable wired to the chassis. The entire body of the car is a Wifi antenna. I won't comment on what I do whilst I'm on a long drive to nowhere in particular...

BTW, if you find someone like me, they will seriously play with you. I've been known to flip websites upside down, back to front text, same for images. Oh, and don't even THINK of entering card details on a wifi network. It may be encrypted, but do you trust the person who owns the router?? :D
