View Full Version : My CBT/DAS...the story so far!

It's been 2 days now and I'm baaaaaad lol...I have actually managed to bin it a couple of times (4 actually!! Each time I've been virtually at a standstill, felt the bike go and I've followed but I've now realised that it's not particularly heavy and I can save it...what a muppet) but there you go...I'm a titch and I have the strength of a gnat!! Has anybody else been as rubbish as me? Probably not :-$

It's been fun because I'm not learning in a car park but on a 700m go-cart track...I can't actually imagine how anybody can start to feel confident on a car park. The instructor said the minimum requirement for space is only 30 X 80 feet!!

Clutch control's coming on ok...I'm not all that great at stopping in general but I've got the hang of emergency stops...I guess it will come together with time! I'm enjoying the main road riding but it's pants in town and there's been a couple of times I've thought why am I doing this but I guess it's down to confidence :D

Oh...I'm REALLY bad at getting the bike on the centre stand...need to beef up down the gym or strap on some lead weights

I'm doing a 7 day course as I'm a total novice...at first I thought 7 days sounded extreme but now I'm just thinking...OMG, how am I going to be up to standard in time for the test!! Mind you...before yesterday morning I'd never even ridden on my own!

Words can't describe how **** I was at my CBT :) 5 attempts it took. Though that was mainly confidence issues after the first being catastrophically awful, took me as much time to get over that as it did to learn the stuff I was having trouble with.

ah you'll pass is surprisingly easy when i did mine felt like i was out 10 mins plus the assessor was in a car very easy to lose :D best thing is if you miss a turn or anythink just say the radio was crackly

I feel better now knowing it's not just me! Thank you :D Did you pass first time? I was speaking to somebody the other night who passed on their 4th attempt...said it was easy to pass but it was also easy to fail!

I'm feeling sooo much better now...I thought I was the worlds worst!! Hopefully I'll keep my SV upright...it's actually lower than the 125 I'm riding atm so that has to be a plus!!

Cheers everybody!!

will do. when is your test?

i forgot to say, on my test i got a bit lost when i was supposed to be riding around the block before doing the emergency stop and ended up riding back the way i came. it confused the poor examiner. he had to take me to a more simple block to ride around!!!!

Sounds like your having fun, i feel for you ladies doing your DAS's. I did my training and test on a 125cc and i was so happy i did.

I trained with two girlies and they dropped the bike in u-turns and on emergency stops no end of times. The u-turns all about shifting your weight to counter balance the bike, when they understood how to sit on the bike and move around to balance they soon managed it. They passed first time after a weeks training.

Good luck with yours im sure you'll be fine. ;)

Great timing huh?!

Does it take you ages to log-in to the forum btw? Just wondered cos of your username lol :D

My head is spinning atm...so much to think about...lifesavers, road positioning blah blah blah...driving a car seems so easy compared with riding!! All car drivers should be made to ride...would make them more careful...

dont worry i took 3 attempts to pass my test! first one said i was passing parked cars too close! i'm very annoyed asbout that, as i had asked my instructor the day before aboutt he exact thing in the same location. but never mind. second i put foot down on u-turn. new i had failed straight away. passed third time! got a bike couple of months later!! lving it so much now!!
it'll be great and you'll love it once its all done and dusted!

did my das over 2 weekends never having ridden before. dropped bike 17 times day before my test. I was so tired having to put bike onto centre stand. biggest killer for me was getting on and off the bike as I was not allowed to put it onto the side stand. real struggle getting my leg over (ooer Mrs)

best of luck with your test, you will be fine.

i did my test a month a go and will try and give you some advice:

center stande all you do put all your weight on the stand and the bike should be as light as a feather ( dont be afriad to do this the bike can not go anywhere whilst the stand is touching the floor)
dont give up, first day my instructor shouted at me so much i was nearly in tears ( im 17 for god sakes) remember hes not there to be your friend hes there to teach you motorcycling (thats what my intructor said to me)
for u turns, speed up till a good 10mph pull in the clucth and do a smooth turn looking at the direction ur about to go not at the kerb and try to not use the front brake ( i got told destabilises the bike)best of luck, is the best thing in the world when you pass

I did a 4 day intesive course, pretty much as you were doing, but I'd already done CBT before hand.

I had the advantage of a long time on field bikes, so bike control wasn't an issue at all. The only real thing I had to brush up on was mirrors (don't use them much in fields - no idea why  ).

I still managed to drop my SV at ooooohhhh 0mph, into a bush in my front garden!!

I also dropped the ER5 I was learning on, right outside the dealership I'd bought the SV from, whilst trying to put it on the centre stand, about 5mins before my test. Didn't use the centre stand on my test for some odd reason...

You'll be fine, we all have moments like you've had, but you'll pull through it in the end. Determination alone will get you there if nothing else does.

I missed a left turn on my test yesterday. lol. blamed it on the radio aswell. Still passed though, with 2 minors, both for resting my foot on back brake and making the back break light turn on.

Cant wait till i get a bike now, but have to wait till 11th of july now though. :smt089

Ah, I dropped my bike SO many times during my DAS... and after (every bike i've ever ridden - bar one...).

Once you get used to handling the odd weight of bikes it doesn't happen so frequently if at all (apart from years down teh road when you're SO confident you forget yourself in front of a big crowd of people and oops! over it goes.).

As for putting the bike on the centre stand, it really is mostly about technique rather than brute strength. Saying that I bought a bike with no centre stand after passing my test AND I put the side stand down before I get off now... seems the more sensible option.

btw I passed my DAS on the second go (4 day intensive course, no previous motorbike experience), so don't worry. Not everyone passes first time and it's no biggy if you don't either. Keep your head screwed on and you'll be fine. ;)

Thanks everybody, I really do feel better about the whole thing now I know that I'm not the only one who's struggled. It's just when you see people out with their bikes they usually seem so natural and confident but I guess that just comes with time.

I'm taking the 125 out for a spin on my own this Saturday, hopefully everything will just click and I'll get on better...I remember feeling a lot better about driving when I was able to get on with it on my own :)

I didn't do DAS i did a year on CBT then had 1 lesson before doing my test which i failed... twice!

as for dropping bikes well i still do it, funniest one was there used to be a small tree next to my driveway which was in the way of getting the bike in and out so i decided to dig it out, which left a hole about a foot wide and a foot deep. Then i decided to take the bike out for a spin, so htere i am pushing the bike backwards up the drive, car on 1 side and the big hole that i'd just made on the other. Put my foot in the hole fell over still holding onto the throttle redlined it as it fell against the car

I've known someone crash into a bush on his CBT and still pass.... How did it take you 5 attempts?

Largely because of the confidence thing- I just wasn't happy to go on the road at all for... The first 3, maybe? Didn't feel remotely safe.

Also because I used the honest CBT place near mine, not the crooked one- I could've got the certificate just for having a pulse at the bad one (they passed a friend of mine without ever going on the road- he binned his Gilera and broke his hand after about half an hour in the yard, and they still passed him.) My place, CSM, aren't like that at all- of the 12 or so others that were doing CBTs at the same time as me, only about 8 got their ticket the first time, you have to do pretty well there before they'll pass you. (most of the pizza places refuse to use them, as too many people need to resit)

But tbh, no honest CBT place could have passed me after the first couple of times, I was just dismal. Never fell off once, but that doesn't actually matter- falling off is no detriment to a CBT pass, as long as you ride to an overall adquate standard.

This brings me onto the n0bs on scooters really. They get passed for even turning up, hence being d1ckheads on the scooters.

I didn't feel safe the first time I went out on the road...the main roads were ok...it was just horrible in town cos I didn't feel as in control as I'd like to be. I'm used to driving my car which feels a whole lot more natural and there were times when I just thought what have I got myself into...learning to drive was horrible too tho lol

Yeah, that's how i felt, more or less... The more you ride, the more experience, the more natural and safe you feel because your confidence with your control of the bike increases.

I didn't get a bike for a year after I passed and for the first 6 months or so I was terrified before every ride, but now ees all gooood yes! :smt051

Glad to hear it! :D Most people I speak to put it down to confidence...I just can't wait to get of the poxy CG125 and onto a bigger, less rickety bike!

LouLou - confidence will come with experience, although i'm noting like "experienced" with bikes i would say that i was massively nervous on my CBT and first couple of sessions on the 500 - my instructor was convinced i'd never see 50mph on the speedo and we were holding up traffic, although without wanting to sound my own trumpet slow speed control was generally ok... i've had my SV 4 weeks, done 600 miles, man and machine are now in harmony and all is well, seen triple figures and relaxed in the corners. it will come with time. and if you do happen to fail the test, who cares?

keep at it, bikes are inherently unstable so they're bound to end up horizontal sometimes:thumbsup:

 Absolutely... Nothing quite like sliding to a halt after coming off at 70mph, watching your bike go into a gravel trap, then picking it up and finding it's taken one broken lever and one damaged lever, a bent subframe, and a slightly marked fairing. I've seen bikes take worse damage falling off their sidestands. Good crash bungs are never a bad investment.

i had 2 days training after leaving biking for 6 years (well had a ped anyway) didnt drop the bike once and cbt was a piece of monky cake, test was not alot harder, just keep your cool and enjoy the ride, worth it at the end mate
