Does anyone fancy going out to play on the Sunday 8th July?

I know T-in the Park is on but Northy never turns up anyway this gives him a valid excuse.

If anyone’s interested I'm made a route (about 180 miles) Starting Fairly Central start time 10.00am. I’ll keep the directions simple the now but can and will print people maps and directions for the day.

Start 10:00

Town Road to be taken

Cumbernauld
(Little Chef – Start 10.00) A80
Kilsyth A803 – A891
Strathblane A81 – A821
Aberfoyle
(Quick Stop)
Aberfoyle A81
Callander* A84
Petrol (if needed) A827
Aberfeldy A826
Crieff
(stop for chuck – for me it’ll be Country Kitchen)
Crieff A85
Lochearnhead A85
Comrie B827 – A822
Glendevon A823
Powmill or Knockhill (End)

total distance is about 180 miles

(*please note Dukes Pass is an option but its too busy at the weekend)

if this is ok we can get a list of the definite and the possible riders / pillions.

our riding etiquette has taken a bit of a kicking lately. with everyone more or less riding for themselves. Maybe time to start being a wee bit more organised if we have newbies or people that cant ride anymore (me) with them so that no one is left behind and has to play catch up all day. i dont mind going at the back as Im so damn slow these days - no one will be holding me up

Well said that woman!

Even though I like to think of myself as intermediate, ahem, I'd be a lot happier in a slow group than hanging on for grim death to the fasts. I'm 40 you know. Pardon?

Don't take much organising either...

Hmm, maybe I do ride too quickly on the SV runs, and the new bike ain't helping matters...

What I am going to do for this run is print off everyone a dirrections sheet... I always do my best to wait at the important junctions to make sure everyone is going the right way, But I'm possibly not the most sedate of leaders...

what are the numbers for this ride out???

im not saying you should slow down dean. but when you go for a rideout its nice to ride with others at least some of the way. but as long as there is a route and lots of stopping places its ok as if you do ride like an old woman (cant believe how bad my riding is these days, year off t he bike really puts you back) its good to know you dont have to keep up but that you wont get lost and end up riding around yourself all day.

oh yeah count me in for this one

SVTONYB
30-06-07, 09:13 AM
you will always get 1 or 2 who need to push it more than others and thats their choice and its good to have that element in the group. But what is also needed is the 1 or 2 experienced riders who are willing to ride in the middle and end of the group to keep us together. A newbie should not be the last bike in the group.

Tiger 55

Not an issue! If you wait at junctions and the all the stop points go for it...

You can't enjoy a ride out if your either playing catch up or tootling along watching some guy in your mirrors. Ride at your own speed, ride for yourself, and everyone will catch up at stopping points, usually withing 2-3 minutes of each other.

If you can't enjoy it for worrying about keeping the group together riding at a pace which is not comfortable for you then why would you go on the rideout?

Blast it for a few miles if you want then pullover and have a break while you wait for those behind you! Or tootle along at your own speed, driving miss daisy, safe in the knowledge that the rest of the group will be enjoying a fag break just around the corner.

Tiger 55
30-06-07, 09:40 PM
If you can't enjoy it for worrying about keeping the group together riding at a pace which is not comfortable for you then why would you go on the rideout?
Because you like riding in a group as much as you like having a banter in a group?

It's not a worry, it's just that I can't be the only one who fancies it. Or can I?

Example. "Anyone fancy a group ride to the next meet point?" says the Director of Etiquette (moi :smt045 ) and there's a few murmurs of assent. If sufficient numbers, split into fast and slow and if not go as one mob. At the next meet point ask the same question again, to replies of "nah, too slow" and "no ta, way too fast" and thems that's happy in a group continue (mibbe move up or down as required) and thems that's not ride for themselves.

Of course no pressure to group up, absolutely not, just an option

I like Tiger's idea.

Thing is, we don't really have the numbers to do a formal marker system- with the big groups like this weekend it's absolutely dynamite, best way of doing things full stop, but with only 10 or so it's too much. But we could work on that...

Kitkat and Blue Flame will remember how they did it last year for the AR- you have a fast rider at the front who knows the way, and someone who's happy to dawdle at the back, both easily identified (hi-viz is good). When they get to a junction, they stop till the next person turns up, that person stays at that junction and marks the direction change until the backmarker turns up, then it's off again. It does break up the rides a little when you end up being a marker- and lots of stop-start for the leader, obviously. But, it very nearly removes the risk of losing anyone, and it totally takes away any urge to rush. Nobody can be left feeling too slow, nobody has to try and keep up because they don't know the way, and also nobody should end up flying off into the distance- you can still ride fast for the entire time you're riding, just that you'll end up marking a junction sometimes.

Also, it gives great photo ops. We'll often have someone marking junctions anyway, so it's not a big change to do it more formal.

The only thing is that it's hard to find a backmarker. But I totally volunteer each time I make it, I hate being followed anyway. The backmarker needs to not mind riding alone, but they don't have to be slowed down- if they did know there was someone in the run who wasn't up for a blast, then they can just leave a few minutes after everyone else, lovely.

Find me a drawback :) There might well be one but I don't know it. I'd personally be very happy to make things a bit more organised, I've seen a lot of these runs and why they go well or badly. But, I'm obviously not the ideal person since I often won't make it to them these days, and that's not really fair if people are depending on me.

i just felt a bit out of it on the last rideout. guaranteed I had to go back halfway thru to pick up lost sheep. I then tootled down to next stop. bike was playing up (overheating I think). Then we all set off and within 10 min I was on my todd (well pillion and sheep were still with me) and never saw another soul again. I know I was riding fairly slowly but I just felt I may as well have been on my own. but on the other hand I dont want everyone to feel they have to slow down and nurse maid the slower riders. I want everyone to have fun - surely there must be a way.

I was at the back all day (for obvious reasons) but can I echo your sentiments also. I felt things were getting a little too competitive as the rideout progressed. The run into Gala was silly at one point (120+). I backed off because of my elbow but I could see in front that some of the overtaking was getting a bit lairy and people were under pressure to catch up.

To be fair KitKat, I have to single out Big Al & Mart. They both held back any time either of us got stuck behind traffic.

If it's dry then I'll come up. I hate the Kwak in the rain - it wants to spit me off constantly... Also not been out on the bike since coming back from the Isle of Man TT:( :( Weather has been ********..

If Husky wants to meet me at mcDonalds Hamilton at 9:30am or thereabouts we'll go together to C/Nauld. Doesn't take too long on a bike though. The truck's a killer time wise.
